An STGC Manning Cup Player collapsed

Chrissy 2016-09-20 18:24:53

and died this afternoon -too sad. Captain of the team - Dominic James collapsed minutes after the game started - was rushed to hospital and died before half time. Looks like one of two things - a major heart attack or a massive aneurysm cry

spready 2016-09-20 20:21:56

WOW!!! very sad

jacksprat 2016-09-20 20:23:23

Even more sad, I understand that he was an only child.

RIP Soldier!

Happened to a co-worker's son - he was 23 - his father also died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage (in his 40s).

jacksprat 2016-09-20 22:15:01

For what its worth, these two coaches are linked to both XLCR and St. Georges. Bertis Bell is a STGC and Excelsior alumnus, while the XLCR coach and sports master, Xavier Gilbert, is a STGC past student.

It is heartening to see both teams rallying to support each other in this time of grief. At its essence this is what school boys sports - indeed all sports-should be about but instead it is being corrupted by the adults -coaches, alumni and school principals- pursuing their own selfish agendas.

Heard the news on Sportsmax. Really sad indeed.

Very sad. My heart goes out to his parents who must have had high hopes for their talented son.

Xavier was a decent cricketer as well - played U19

In reply to Chrissy

Really?

I knew he was a cricketer but didn't know that he played U19.

I know he was a contemporary of Samuels & Gayle while at George's and later played Senior Cup for Lucas.

Saw the video, couldn't even watch the entire thing.
Real real sad.
Das a real hard thing to see man.
May His soul rest in peace
may all the players, fans, families and friends be able to get some courage to deal through this difficult time.

nitro 2016-09-21 12:09:44

It appears the medical team was not equipped to handle the situation.

Typical of this failed state.

np 2016-09-21 13:39:47

Unfortunate occurrence ... likley some congenital disorder just coming to play ... OR if otherwise he was not sharing this with coach/team management.
The suddeness of this points to congenital defects. Autopsyshould soon say what went wrong.

@ Chrissy has any word come from the parents??

They must be so fricking distraught about now. Bertis took it bad, and it was really nice t osee both teams/coaches/personel RALLYING round and consoling each other.

The dad was there - said he was watching the ball and didn't see him fall. He took him to hospital -think they knew he was dead before he reached hospital.

The dad went to every match he played from way back when.

I remember that happening twice - once by Taylor Hall - scrimmage - trying to remember his name - the keeper - just fell - dead and it happened to a co-worker's son.

jacksprat 2016-09-21 20:36:04

For some of the XLCR players this must seem like a case of Deja Vous, this sudden death of Dominic James.

A few years ago one of their U14 teammates - Mark Riley - died under similar circumstances. Some of the players from that XLCR team are current members of the Manning Cup team.

Maybe they were better able to empathize with and comfort the St. George's players having gone through a similar experience now twice in their young lives.

Headley 2016-09-21 20:41:39

Just gut-wrenching to see a young man with so much promise die. Makes me wonder if parents ever really recover from having to bury their children.

It's real sad but people young and old fall down dead. I remember about a decade ago - my friend went to pick up her twins at Immaculate. One had an asthma attack - she died before reaching hospital. Same thing happened with Saddle's son - he was in his early 20s. Hardest thing on earth - burying a child.

I guess Britain's a failed state too

And France

Both of these incidents happened this month as well....

It's up to the teams to provide the required medical back-up, not the country.

The schools are a part of the state.
The only thing Jamaica has going that is positive is a few people running fast.

It is a cesspool of incompetence.

A tragedy for Georgians far and wide.

I asked and was told that StGC athletes on the Manning Cup teams go through medicals ahead of the season. Further, I am told that the medical showed no issues for concern.

R.I.P. Dominic Allessandro James. Captain and leader

Thanks for that update Googs.
Rass bwaay .. it must be a major heartbreak for those parents on the suddenness of this, and the consequent inability to do anything that could help ... can you imagine that DAD trying to rush his young boy to a hospital. sometimes life throw you a curve ball that you can never hit.

Just too sad ...

my last girl suffers from major allergies including asthma issues, but played football/soccer always as youngster and from timeto time had to use her inhalers ... and the likelihood of a bee sting would be major ... she TRAVELS always with her EpiPen ... and has had to use it on occasion.

She runs regularly in the park and certain pollens off the many trees affect her bad -

the big kicker is we found out the hard way that she cannot eat crawfish/shellfish and then go run after ... one day she had crawfish for dinner and went running and after a few laps she called on her phone to say she was full of bumps/hives all over and felt faint - she could not get back to her car .. .we had to rush there get the EPIPENs and give two sticks immediately. Since then she don't eat any seafood ...

That crossed my mind while thinking about the whole thing.

I understand that his JC coach said he had asthma. Asthma is deadly.

archangel 2016-09-23 20:08:52

Cardiomyopathy is unofficially bounded about it.

np 2016-09-23 20:21:57

In reply to summergon

Asthma is bad in that it limits/ restricts oxygen supply to the lungs which result in less oxygenated blood to heart ... not good. And some youngsters fail to take their meds regularly. Hope this guy was smarter than that ....

RIP young man. Many lessons to be learned ....

1.Be aware of your kids ailments and give due guidance (and I'm not saying his parents weren't because I don't know)
2. Coaches awareness of individual players health issues if any
3. Schools to implement regular collection of health info from parents or have that in the school nurse program (if any)

Kind folks can keep adding with the hope some folks will pass the message on.

Let's hope the wheels will continue to turn in positive ways as you described. The thought of having medical staff and equipment at the grounds is a part of those measures that ought to be in place e.g a nearby afíb machine.

How many schools can afford proper medical requirements?

np 2016-09-26 10:25:58

In reply to Chrissy

Sadly --- not many .... but this is where the OLD BOYs/OLD GIRLS associations, clubs etc - like KIWANIS can be of good help.

Here .... Link Text is a near similar view to what I'm thinking/proposing/suggesting -- , and makes the point better than I can - coming from a physician.

The schools must get more involved in student health care ... some have school nurse etc already ,many dont.
Care should be applied to ALL - but those who are engaging in spoets - T&T, football, cricket, basketball - need to be cared for specifically, in clooaboration with PARENTS/FAMILY.---
