The real problem with the WI player contracts

Larr Pullo 2016-11-27 12:40:43

And this is something the Dave Cameron (B.I. Hons.) and his lapdog Wavell should have addressed, is that no sportsman in the prime of his career would accept a lesser contract just because of a minor dip in form. The contracts that the players are offered are not multi-year contracts, and if a player is an acknowledged top performer in the team, then it would make sense to understand that cricket is a game where form ebbs and flows.

If a top performing player's form dips, should he be penalised by a pay cut, or should he be incentivized through the structure of his contract to return to performing at his optimum level?

Therefore, offer a multi-year contract reflective of his value to the team, and then tack on incentives so that he could earn more based on hitting certain pre agreed benchmarks. ALL the players contracts should be structured that way, whether it be multi year, or a single year given to a junior player (with requisite incentives of course.)

Instead of Dave Cameron (B.I. Hons.) worrying about the well deserved slap down to his overly bloated ego, he should reflect on why senior players are running away from the WI structure, and try to come up with a payment system that would address the realities of the WI's operational environment.

Hopefully one of Dave Cameron (B.I. Hons.) minions, or even Wavell, could point out this thread so that they could learn from the ensuing discussion.

I recall you being a big WICB supporter in the past. What changed? Cameron's ascendancy?

Anyhow WICB can never match ipl pay structure so I can hardly see them retaining the seniors.

Don't think Larr spoke about matching the IPL pay structure. It was about having incentives tacked on for reaching marks.
The NFL does this and I think that will be a good start.
You get a bonus if your work is good. Didn't think een WICB say they made some surplus?

T20 World Cup!

Why couldn't they retain Bravo? He wasnt trying to go off and play IPL.

Very good suggestion which would give players motivation to perform and therefore raise the level of their games and in extension the team's game. So you are saying that in terms of grading the WICB should be looking at their career averages rather than averages within a certain period that makes sense too.

I really do not believe Dastardly Dave will come off his high horse and consider and accept these recommendations. We need someone more reasonable and level headed in that position.

We need a restructuring of the board as the WICB is accountable to no-one but themselves and that is not sustainable if you want improvements in the administration of the game.

Look Fuzzyhead, I know you are a bit shaken up by the recent happenings but please try to not allow that to distort your reasoning.

Every time somebody comes with a good idea you shoot it down by saying that they were on the other side not too long ago. As far as I see all of us have been on one side one time or the other but guess what the problem still exists so what can we do to find some short term or long term resolution?

Look man windies cricket will never be an easy business to run. The fact that you can get selected without signing a central contract is good. Bravo is a big baby and too much controversy for a guy. Time for each country to go do their own thing

And who would be the first to cry foul if the established rules are broken in favor of a player who is not one of your favorites?

Have u seen the contract? Do you know the terms and conditions of the contract?

Until we know that it's mere speculation here!

Right now wat Windies working with is pay for performance and a m/o of every man eat a food!

I consider myself a sensible fella, and I think you are too. Does it sound like the contracts contain incentives of the type I described to you?

My point is WICB can not mstch the big leagues so how will you get the Gayles Russell etc to play for Windies if it clashes or overlaps with the big leagues? So we'll be stuck with the second tier till they get recognised by the leagues.

Larr Pullo 2016-11-27 14:49:12

In reply to FuzzyWuzzy

So Russell only plays T20, Who were we competing with for Bravo?

It's a good thing that the opportunity is being given to them but is there enough quality to warrant 90 players getting PCL contracts?

Dukes 2016-11-28 10:18:23

I am amazed at how some people keep setting up strawmen to advance their basic positions of mimic men idolatry (thanks Chrissy).
The WICB has a plantocracy mentality or a patriarchial dictatorship. They feel that cricketers should be treated like paid helpers whose job is to go out there and beat the opposition and in return they will be rewarded by their benefactors i.e the WICB. Many on this board particularly those who pride themselves on being lettered, subscribe to this view and are quite resentful of these young pipsqueaks earning such YUGE salaries when dem din even pass 1 O Level and hence they want to bring the hammer down on any of these lil boys who dare to speak up against this raging BULLCRAP.

In reply to POINT

As far as I am aware Kraig to use but one example has 9 O'Levels and 3 A'Levels and then there was a certain Jimmy Adams way before him.

Why dont we seem to be bothered that we are producing cricketers who are not meeting basic academic standards and have time for nonsense like people being enviously of guys with ordinary education making more money? The other cricketing nations seem to have no problem producing qualified student athletes.

There are several simple reasons why we no longer compete well including lack of basic intelligence and aptitude. I know for example of an entire school cricket team across year groups at a prominent school where every kid is flunking school. This is deemed acceptable because in success there is reward and advancement albiet to the detriment of the majority of boys. So it is no wonder that on the same island the junior national cricket captain is struggling to meet grades and no once is concerned since an IPL contract beckons.

We waste so much time on foolishness and not enough on the real issues. If anyone has a problem with the WIBC and they have the talent and wherewithall to earn a living elsewhere let them do so. How about everyone just doing something meaningfull for the next generation else we might as well just pack it all up right now.

The opposite also holds true, few cricketers made rich playing the game now think that they are bigger than the game.

Consequently, they display behavior that may be best described as uncouth, uncomely, and vulgar.

Cricket is a "gentleman's game" - indiscipline, uncultured, and uncivilized behavior mashing up the region!

The Nouveau riche cricketers should learn that "a butoo in a benz is still a butoo" - Prof Rex Nettleford

I am a big fan of Bravo but I do not subscribe to fackries!

I am sure if comrade Cameron was a white man he would not have been treated with such disrespect!
