T&T all time XI
In reply to Andy99
All these greats playing in the current gen and Lara the most recent?
In reply to matchstick
Its understandable to you they might look great compared to what you've seen from Guyana in the recent past.
In reply to Andy99
Inshan Ali, Nanan? and Constantine should be in as de allrounder
In reply to Oilah
I tend to look more at accomplishments in the Test arena over FC.
In reply to Andy99
How Gerry Gomez ahead of Lil Bravo or Carew?
You didn't even mention Carew
In reply to Andy99
Joey Carew must cappo the side.
Richard Gabriel should be in contention for an opening spot
Rangy Nanan must play
Julien gets the allrounder spot
Jumadeen?
Richard De Souza?
Why is logie in that side?
In reply to Andy99
Opening bowler....Tim Gopeesingh
I actually saw him open the bowling
In reply to Narper
WTF no Ganga!
Ram can't make that team over Carew or Julien.
In reply to doosra
By performance.
30 bat average, 27 bowl average.
Though Carew deserved a special mention.
In reply to Narper
Could probably come in for Logie.
This guy? Especially when you have Davis and Stollmeyer?
He was really unfortunate not to play more but as I said rate INT over FC and Didnath did well in his Tests.
Not over Gerry Gomez whose contributions tends to go unnoticed.
Jumadeen, Ali and Nanan would all be in contention if it was considering FC cricket for T&T but once again I looking at the highest level.
Like the trio above.
This is just my team and my conditions, feel free to post your(everyone not jus Narps) XI.
In reply to camos
Although a joke, if it was regional cricket he'd certainly be in there or around.
In reply to Andy99
Why yuh calling him this?
In reply to Andy99
But you do know...these guys were not selected for the WI on a regualr basis not because they didn't perform well at regional level...in that era a decision was made to only pick fastmen for WI..and we were winning
In reply to Narper
Guess me getting ole.

Thinking it was Didnath rather than Dinanath.
Both Ali and Jumadeen had 12 Tests each, although it might not have been the best circumstances(A test here or there, flat pitches, not used well, etc.) they didn't do enough to do justice to their perceived talents.
Its why I said Nanan was unfortunate, he did well in his sole Test as well as being outstanding in FC.
In reply to Andy99
You know it is easier pick ON another man's team than to pick one of your own

In reply to Narper
It is but it is more fun seeing all the different combinations and ideas.
In reply to Emir
Yuh know I am serious..Dr Tim Gopeesingh did open bowling for T&T in the 70s
In reply to Narper
Someone I worked with told me that, wrt to Tim.
Can't find anything official on it, no cricinfo nor cricketarchive for Tim. Only a mention on a TNT site.
In reply to Andy99
I saw him live at QPO bowling against the Ozzies in this match
In 1973, he played for the combined Universities of the West Indies team against Australia (the match took place in Jamaica), as well as playing for Jamaica against Tobago (the match took place in Tobago). From 1973-1978, he played first class cricket for Queens Park Cricket club in Trinidad. In 1975, 1976 and 1977 he topped Trinidads bowling average in the domestic cricket competition. In 1978 he represented Trinidad against Australia (the match took place at the Queens Park Cricket Oval) and against the combined islands (the match took place in Antigua).
Such is his fame in the international cricket world for his achievements- that, he has been featured by international sport site ESPN CRICINFO website collection of all famous cricket players worldwide with impressive fast bowler statistics.

In reply to Narper
They keep referring to what we would call local club cricket to first class cricket.
Edit: Found him, they have a different spelling to his name.
In reply to Andy99
Check out another match here with Tim Gopeesingh in 1973 against Ozzies at Sir Frank Worrel ground. Mona Campus
JOEY CAREW had a SOLITARY GOOD TEST TOUR. Australia/New Zealand 1968-69 he had a great time but otherwise a TOTAL FAILURE!!!!!!
In reply to Narper
Yes, I actually saw him bowl live in QP oval, in was in the early 70's- I went home on vacation that year, it was a very weak team, I believe at the bottom.
He cannot make an all time C team in my opinion.
Prince Bartholomue is much better, and he still was not good to make the TT all time best.
Learie Constantine
Inshan Ali
Need to be in any all time T&T team
Honourable mention to Richard De Souza....certainly before Gus Logie....and I'm a Logie fan
Jack Noriega
Willie Rodriguezz
Rajindra dhanraj
phil simmons
ravi rampee
In reply to Narper
Phil could make it only because of the paucity of true international class openers from T&T
Aside from Jeffrey Stollmeyer....nobody really matches up....so Phil could fight up with the likes of Richard Gabriel, Ganga (who has the best FC stats of them all even though he mostly batted between 3 & 5 for T&T so he wasn't really an opener), and nephew Lendl for a spot.
The rest can't make an all time first XI
In reply to Dukes
that's about 50% of his career HAHAHAHA
total failure in about 4 matches?
Let's look at some more detailed stats
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vs
Aus - 5 matches, avg 47.44
NZ - 6 matches, avg 37.27
India 3 matches, 5 innings, avg 24.2. In the 5 innings he scored: 3, 41,45,28, 4
England 5 matches, 10 innings, avg 22.5. In the 10 innings he scored: 16, 0*,40, 1,2,0, 36, 36, 40*, 1, 44
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So of his 15 innings vs England and India, he had 50% decent scores (7/

I do not understand how one could be labelled a "TOTAL FAILURE" with those stats
HAHAHAHA

In reply to Andy99
Thanks for putting this team together. I understand the criterion you used to pick your team. If I was to walk back through the years and take a census, from cricketers, fans, coaches and all in and around T+T cricket, the following will be highly unlikely or impossible.
.Anthony Gray or Gerry Gomez being considered for a T+T team ahead of Bernard Julien at his peak.
.A T+T spinner being picked ahead of Inshan Ali.
.Learie Constantine being left out of any Trinidad team.
In reply to methodic
Gray wouldn't be in competition with Bernard Julien for a spot.
Julien may have to take a back seat to Learie Constantine.
IMO, Bishop and Gray are the 2 best trini pacers ever. Period. Both unlucky with injury. Dillon and Rampaul are worthy subs.
In reply to methodic
Ramadhin not ahead of Ali?
In reply to doosra
My friend, you clearly were not around when Joey Carew was stinking up the opening position in WI cricket.Looking at statistics without context sometimes leads to erroneous impressions
1.Joey Carew went to England in 1963 and failed as he did in 1966 and 1969
so he was 0 for 3 in terms of success on England tours
2.He failed when India toured the West Indies in 1971
3.He failed when New Zealand toured the West Indies in 1972.
Joey Carew also scored a few forties in test cricket when the matches were petering out to draws, thus giving the false impression of success.
I remember in 1971 when India toured the West Indies,Joey Carew did his usual poor imitation of a test opener and a few days before the 5th and final test match scored a blistering double century for Queen's Park in a club match and as a result Freddo was dropped and replaced by Carew who of course failed. To me that was the most outrageous selection to satisfy the local crowd in the Caribbean.
In reply to imusic
IMO, Bishop and Gray are the 2 best trini pacers ever.
That is not merely an opinion it is an established fact!!!!!!
In reply to imusic
I am not sure Gray could bowl the new ball better than Julien. I saw Julien take a 9fer in the oval at the very back end of his career. Julien could get that extra mile of pace when he needed it and he use to swing and seam the ball. Many will also argue that at his best he could bat better than many of those contending as batsmen.
In reply to doosra
Maybe, he has a great legacy but certainly not Ramnarine.
In reply to methodic
Tony Gray Test cricket
Overs - 148
Maidens - 37
Runs - 377
Wickets - 22
Average - 17.13
Strike Rate - 40.36
Econ - 2.54
Tony Gray FC cricket
Overs - 3425
Maidens - 649
Runs - 10283
Wickets - 451
Average - 22.80
Strike Rate - 45.56
Econ - 3.00
Tony Gray has the best test bowling average AND the best test bowling strike rate of ANY main west indian bowler in the history of the game.
He doesn't get the recognition because his career was severely cut short by injury.
But DAMN dude. Bernard Julien and Tony Gray in the bowling department?
No comparison boss. Gray by LIGHT YEARS.
In reply to imusic
Ok, 'long and long' deserves his pick. So the team might have two all-rounders.
I can't pick the best but I can pick the best I saw.
1.Richard Gabriel - The best opener we had against genuine pace.
2.Phil Simmons - especially before he got hit.
3.Brian Lara
4.Larry Gomes
5.Dwayne Bravo
6.Bernard Julien
7.Deryck Murray
8.Ian Bishop
9.Rangy Nanan
10.Inshan Ali
11.Anthony Gray
In reply to methodic
Thanks methodic, your criteria was the best who you saw play fair enough.
Mine was best in Internationals in our history and I think it would be hard to argue against my XI using my criteria.
Now others please pick yours and say whats your criteria.
In reply to imusic
the best bowling performance I saw in one year (by a Trini) in regional cricket was executed by Harold Joseph in his first year.
In reply to methodic
Can't argue with that. Harry Jo was special. Too bad he liked the horses more than cricket
In reply to methodic
My Antiguan buddy and I called the QPO twice before lunch, twice before Tea and just before the close.
We wanted to see, how Viv batted against him.
We both lived in Calgary, and my buddy was a bigger cricket nut than me.
After Tea, Viv took him to the cleaners.
This is the match we were exited to follow,
Trinidad and Tobago v Combined Leeward and Windward IslandsShell Shield 1980/81
In reply to openning
I watched that game and it is amazing how I forgot the details of it. I remember Viv being lucky to survive early on. I remember him ripping one past Viv off stump, Viv pushed straight down the wicket.
The ball was pitched on middle and off. That year with Joseph and the year Patterson took everybody to the cleaners were the best regional bowling performances I saw in spin and pace respectively.
In reply to Emir
I saw Gopeesingh bowl many times. He was good enough to make T+T team at the time. Remember now, Trinidad were in desperate search for a pacer for many years. Just before him Balkaram Seagram and Gomes use to open the bowling together. Gomes and Seagram were the same speed.
In reply to Narper
Even now they dont get selected as they should, and when they do get selected they are targeted for drop if they can't get 5 wickets.
In reply to imusic
He likes the horses more than Sobers ?
In reply to Andy99
Ganesh Mahabir was a boss of a bowler.. I believe better than Bishoo
First-class span 1975/76 - 1987/88
Trinidad fast bowlers after Gomes and Seagram opened the bowling:
Tim Gopeesingh, Alec Burns, Eric Audain, Dean St Hillaire, Anthony Gray, Ian Bishop.
I missed a few years and came back to find, Marlon Black, Merv Dillon, Ravi Rampaul, Alleyne, Marlon Richards. I don't know if I missed any. (I missed Giles Antoine.)
My four prong will be.
Bishop
Gray
Ravi
Dillon
In reply to Narper
he came after Inshan, I think he played a little with Jumadeen. He was a very steady leg spinner.
In reply to Narper
Ganesh Mahabir had a decent fc career
to have that record at the time means he was good i suppose
In reply to doosra
Mahabir was very good...wrong time...could even get a look in
Mahabir was from Tunapuna...on one side of UWI....Anil Rajah ...a middle order batsman...was from St Augustine...jus outside the campus...on de other side
I believe Anil Rajah's son is currently opening for T&t.
Prakash Moosai....a middle order batsman...who is now a high court judge...was also from Tunapuna....all de bhais played for T&T around the same time
In reply to methodic
Bishop
Gray
Ravi
Dillon
Good prong attack....with Bernard Julien the allrounder
Julien played for the WI....but he was a boss at Kent in England...he has close to 500 FC wickets
In reply to Narper
Julien was one of the best swing bowlers I see in the West Indies
In reply to Narper
aay aay! ah leave Gabriel off the list, you could imagine that! But he can't make the four prong as--------- yet.
