BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Twenty20 batting star Dwayne Smith has hailed the emergence of the game’s shortest version, saying it had provided opportunities for those players without extended careers at international level.

The 33-year-old Barbadian played only 10 Tests and 105 One-Day Internationals, but transformed himself into a much sought-after batsman on the global T20 circuit, where he has become a fixture in many of the domestic leagues.

Smith joined an elite group in 2004 when he stroked a hundred on Test debut against South Africa in Durban, but then failed to record a single half-century in his next 12 innings and was dropped.

How did Smith become a 'batting star'?

Did the writer think about his/her words before putting them to paper?

I am not a Bajan but have seen Dwayne play many times....I saw him take four wickets in an over against nottinghamshire in a spell of five wickets for one run.( for Sussex in a 40 over game)He was a much underrated swing bowler and a genuine all rounder....his bowling record is excellent even in first class cricket.

He has made three t20 centuries and has a great t20 record. He is a fabulous fielder,one of he best ever...he had a bullet like throw from the boundary.

He has played many match winning innings in t20 and was a pioneer for West Indians seeking to make a professional living.

Dwayne was a consummate professional....playing for QPCC he even came in on his off day to help coaching the youngsters.

I suspect not having a single employer or a support network is a major part of his lack of fitness and early retirement.

He was always polite , but retiring and shy.

Yes it's fair to call him a star..(. For Mumbai Indians in the early days).certainly more of a star than some of you small minded insular negative posters.

When Dwayne Smith burst onto the international cricket scene with a swashbuckling century he was hailed as the next Viv Richards.

Then the runs dried up and people asked why he was still on the team. West Indies management said he was not only a batsman but an all-rounder who could also bowl.

Then the wickets dried up and people said he wasn't making runs and wasn't taking wickets so why was he on the team. West Indies management said he was a brilliant fielder who took spectacular catches and effected unbelievable run outs.

Then he started dropping easy catches. So people said his fielding isn't all that great so why is he still on the team. West Indies management said he was a world class athlete who could run the 100 yards as quick as anyone in international cricket.

Then people said what the $%$% does running the 100 yards have to do with cricket.
