GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced that Rajindra Dhanraj has joined the West Indies Men’s team coaching staff as Spin Bowling Consultant.

The former West Indies leg-break and googly bowler will work with the team in the build-up to the Brighto Paints presents the Q Mobile Cup ODI series against Pakistan in Guyana. He will return ahead of the start of the Brighto Paints presents the Q Mobile Cup Test Series in Jamaica later this month.

Jimmy Adams, the WICB Director of Cricket said: “We welcome Rajindra to the West Indies team group. We’re delighted he has agreed to come and work with our players. He has a wealth of knowledge on the game and we know he will make a great contribution.”

Adams added: “He will be spending time with our slow bowlers prior to both the One-Day Series in Guyana and start of the Test series in Jamaica as we look to improve and enhance their skills.”

Dhanraj, 48, was one of the leading bowlers in regional cricket in the late 1980s and 1990s. He took 295 wickets in 78 first-class matches and also played four Tests and six ODIs for the West Indies between 1994 and 1996

I would like to see the continuous focus on the under 19 spinners and younger though.

Get a pool of serious committed spinners to learn the art.

I would rather have Lance Gibbs teaching them how to bowl rather than this guy.

Maybe he is there to teach Bishoo how to bowl the googly and nothing else.

This guy must be the best the money they are offering for the position can buy.....

Your success as player doesnt automatically convert into being the best or a successful coach. Some of the best coaches were average players who were not blessed with an abundance of talent but worked hard at being technically sound. They bring that sound technical aspect to the players. Former stars are known to be impatient since they look at players through their own past accomplishments and expect to see themselves. Remember Serena's coaches were not top tennis stars.

The current South African coach wasn't a fantastic test player now was he?

Dhanraj played FC cricket when it was not dung heap....he bowled legbreak/googly to real batsmen...he took 295 wickets from 78 matches with an average of 27

As johndom90 pointed out...cappo Richarson did not know how to use him
As Doosra pointed out he played 4 tests ..each one in a different series.

He is appointed to help especially Bishoo....who has been severely neglected and left on his own for development.

In a recent post, I pointed out England have recently snapped up Saqlain for the English spinners

I always felt that Dhanraj was given a raw deal, even though we weren't as devoid of wicket takers as we are now.

It's nice, all well and good to revisit Dhan's brief stint with WI; but i fail to see why this should affect his engagement with the WICB and more importantly him assisting Bishoo

A Dhanraj in today's era of West Indies cricket would have been gold dust.

The WICB should give him a long term contract working with the various regional teams as a travelling spin bowling coach.

Over to you Dave Cameron...one more consideration in the interest of West Indian cricket and an opportunity to put one more feather in your cap.

Best of luck to Davendra Bishoo...be like a sponge...please soak in and implement everything the wizard Dhanraj teaches you.

Inshan Ali died many years ago

Raphick Jumadeen had a brief stint as a WI selector a few years ago.

Ganesh Mahabir was a top class legspinner in the 1980s

Really.. he died in June 1995. So it is only 23 years ago. Worrell died many years ago.
BTW, He had requested a visit from Lara the day before he died and Lara duly obliged. Sadly, Inshan's story is one of "rum till I die."



Yes, and he did not do well as a selector- it was rumored that the chief selector and another member of the committee frustrated him.

He also did commentary some years ago, I thought he was decent but not sure why he faded.



Not sure as well, I knew his Mother. After cricket, he just faded entirely. When he made his debut in 1976 against India, she was mighty proud of him.

Many of us have a hard time understanding this. Same thing when Ambrose was replaced with Estwick. Many of us have a hard time understanding that great player doesn't automatically translate to great coach. It is probably even easier for the mediocre players to become good coaches

Unfortunately the players also think like dat and will quicker listen to a coach who was a great player than an average one.

The first thing young players ask a new coach is if they played for the National Team

And the answer should be show me the long list of those who won soccer WC, NBA titles. Cricket WC titles. EPL titles eyc or lasted padt one season/year. Coaches technically are teachers really and that in itself takes a special type of temperament. How many great scientists were great teachers or Nobel Winners as well. Kinda like superstars hardly make great decision making captains; maybe symbolic ones though
