Ragga007 2017-06-27 11:36:08

St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Windward Islands captain, Sunil Ambris, has finally gotten the call to donned the Maroon colors.

Congratulations Sunil.

I will have to wait and see because i have never seen him bat. I know the guys on the outside, are like backup Quarterbacks very popular until thrown into the fire. I too wish him well.

sunfish 2017-06-27 14:25:54

When wast the last time he held a bat in anger? Good luck nonetheless.

POINT 2017-06-27 16:28:12

If this is true I hope that he has made serious efforts to hone his game . Because the Selectors are not keen
on Windward Islands Players .

Perhaps that is because the Windward
Islands Cricket Board just don't give a Damn about whether its Players are
selected or not selected .

Ambris needs to understand that Players from the Windward Islands
when selected are held to a much higher Standard than Players from the big 4 .

In essence His time to impress is going to be shorter than others ; He
needs to be comfortable & careful at the crease , Getting out swiping or
run out must be avoided .

Do your very best the Selectors are
already primed to do their usual thing . I hope that You are Ready .

GOOD LUCK TO YOU .

granite 2017-06-27 16:37:27

Like Darren Sammy?

Who was appointed WI captain in all 3 formats for an unprecedented 3 year term when he was first appointed?

Even Clive Lloyd...captain of the legendary WI team in the late 70's and 80's was appointed on a series by series basis.

Sammy who averaged less than 20 with the bat and more than 30 with the ball when he was first appointed, and after 128 combined Test, ODI, & T20 matches as captain, still ended up averaging less than 20 with the bat and nearly 40 with the ball?

Sammy who had little to no captaincy experience prior to his unprecedented appointment....IN ALL 3 FORMATS?

He wasn't from Windward Islands or what?

POINT 2017-06-27 17:28:25

His father named him Sunil because he admired Sunil Gavaskar . the last time I saw Sunil Ambris he was about 12 years old .

He & his brother play for the same Club in SVG ; their Father also played
for the same Club , I don't think that
his father still plays .

When presented with hard evidence, conspiracy theorist usually run for cover. At the end of the day, after all of the lamenting about who shold play will be put to rest as most of the average lot fall by the wayside.

analyst-kid 2017-06-27 18:35:05

There is no player today who gets picked for the WI and performs well that will be discarded. Right now in our ODI team we only have Hope who is avg 43.00....no others over 40

welcome AMBRIS...just go and perform.

Ok find 10 more Sammys... I dare you.

For every Sanmmy I could find 10 players from the Windwards/Leewards who were continuously snubbed because of their origins.

I have put the Idiot on Ignore , I suggest that You do the same . What
Sammy has done speaks for itself .

Sammy was not groomed to be the Captain of the Team ; others were groomed ; Sammy also never campaigned
for the Captaincy ;

Others may differ , but I am of the opinion that he did his best as the
Captaincy of the Team ; and despite
his limitations , HE inspired the Players to rise to the occasion , especially in the shortest format of the game .

Interestingly , he is welcomed in most International Cricket Countries
in the World . Now that is a Fact
it surely aint Fiction .

voiceofreason 2017-06-27 22:18:02

In reply to POINT

The Idiot needs to explain himself. Of course Sammy ended up being the best Captain since Richards.

POINT 2017-06-27 22:25:26

In reply to voiceofreason

I admire Sammy because he never campaigned for the Job ; He also was fully aware of the fact that He was
not the most Talented Player on the Team .

HE HOWEVER HAD THE ABILITY TO INSPIRE

HIS PLAYERS , TO BE FULLY COMPETITIVE

IN THE INTERNATIONAL CRICKET ARENA .

This is a fact that none can deny .

Pacy 2017-06-28 04:03:54

TBH,Ambris should have been given his chances before this late selection,he showed his ability and that is what matters, what more can the selectors ask for.

Name some deserving players who have not been given chances? Show some stats?
Also maybe explain why Kesrick Wlliams is in a one-day squad ahead of Reifer/Mayers/Primus, based on stats?

Answer those questions, then we can talk about victimization.

No Jen, you should hope that he is given the same amount of chances as Johnson Charles (forty eight) to average around 26, or Devon Smith (47) to average 25. Carter only got 28 matches to average his 23. Similar to Fletcher who got 25 matches to average 14.
You definitely don't want him to get 10 matches like Kraigg to average 28.

In reply to Baje

Well I'm sure you're familiar with this complaint...

How Shai Hope plays and a batsman with twice his average sits (Blackwood)

I can provide the numbers if you like.

Baje 2017-06-28 11:32:16

In reply to SirGarny
That is a good question. The selectors have selected Blackwood, so you cannot accuse the selctors of being biased. My guess is that it has come down to the coaching staff, for whatever reason, they do not have confidence in Blackwood. Not only did they play Hope with his low average, ahead of Blackwood, they played two Guyanese rookies ahead of Blackwood. Suggesting to me that Blackwood is not at the top of their list.

In reply to Baje

Apart from Johnson Charles, the others were always in and out. Carter playing since WC 2015 til now. And you all need to stop defending Kraigg in ODI's, 65 strike rate can't cut it in the modern game, it just can't. England and India making 300 with ease. 65 strike rate ain't going help yo cause. Kraigg stays as the incumbent in test as he's perfectly fine there.

I remember a series against NZ fletcher made 2 back to back fifty and couldn't make the starting xi the next series. Think was a T20 series. Carter been invincible since Zimbabwe series til now.

Baje 2017-06-28 13:20:46

In reply to jen
Hey Jen, I have never supported Kraiggs inclusion. It was stop gap at best with no long term benefit.

What I am saying is that islanders have been given long runs even longer than Bajans without any great productivity.
I dont begrudge Charles or Fletcher or Devon or Powell their chances. Obviously people saw some potential in them.

However this notion that only bajans get undeserved runs is not supported by evidence

Kesrick performed well in the T20I so they probably felt that he was part of the squad so why not continue with him. Did he play? No. He was simply a fill in for Gabriel.

voiceofreason 2017-06-28 13:27:28

In reply to Baje

What about the many times in the past when Islanders were not selected or when selected given a short run. You mention Devon Smith but he has been dropped on many an occasion in a sporadic career. Fletcher the same. Johnson Charles was dropped then picked again, then dropped rightfully so. What is your point really??

Victor Eddy
Luther Kelly
JOohn Manyard
The Shillingfords
Livingstone Harris
Jim Allen
Noel Guishard
Ridley Jacobs selected at 31.

Dude. Bajans have no tight to even discuss victimization. We lived it.

Jason Holder ? Why is he in every squad and undroppable?

Baje 2017-06-28 13:52:38

In reply to voiceofreason
I think you guys exaggerate thats all, with no stats to back the claim. What did those folks on your list do? Was Devon treated any better than Ryan Hinds?...

Did you recall when Campbell and Chanderpaul who were averaging around 50 in test cricket were dropped for Stuart Williams and Arthurton who were averaging in the 20's?

At first glance at your list, Winston Reid was better than Guishard statistically. No one in Barbados shed any tears for Winston.
Jim Allen had Rowe/Kallicharran/Greenidge/Fredericks/Lloyd/Richards to compete with and it was not like he was setting the world alight. I could go on, but I hate bashing players.

Let the Larry Gomes and Nikita Millers of the world claim victimization. Their stats show it.

Baje 2017-06-28 14:06:13

In reply to voiceofreason
Kesrick is in the squad because Coach Estwick sees something in him. Not because of his stats. Again I have no problem with the coaches wanting to invest in him.

Courtesy 2017-06-28 14:18:45

In reply to Baje

Unless Kesrick learns to move the ball away from the right hander with his action, he will receive particular licks from high end batsmen.

He has nothing in him to inspire confidence.

NYCGURU 2017-06-28 17:04:41

Serious question. What part of Johnson Charles reminds you of an International batsman. He is just like the just discarded Carter, playing at a level above their talent. No wonder we are ranked where we are.

analyst-kid 2017-06-28 17:21:01

I like Johnson Charles
but NYCGURU has a point there:

2017 Super 50 AVG 13.12
2017 Four Day AVG 17.00
Overall FC AVG 20.79
Overall List A AVG 23.86
ODIs avg 26.72

Scar 2017-06-28 18:32:33

In reply to analyst-kid
Johnson Charles is best suited to the T 20 format end of story. he has proven his worth at key moments in both the T20 WC competitions he played including semis and finals. He is not the attacking type suited to Test cricket as OZ, Pommies, NZ, Pak and India have at the top. Every one is taking a page outta the OZ opening bat attack at all costs book and are better for it. That does not mean just a swiper should be picked but a really good stroke player with aggressive intent at opportune times should be sought out. He should then be worked in the nets only on his weakness before anointing him like they did Hetty.

Squad: Jason Holder (captain), Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Ashley Nurse, Rovman Powell, Kesrick Williams.

Kyle Hope and Ambris replace out-of-form batsmen, left-handers Kieran Powell of Nevis and Barbadian Jonathan Carter.

Dramatically, however, in first announcing the squad last night just before 7 o' clock, Cricket West Indies had named Kieran Powell.

But in a "re-send" just after 7 o' clock this morning, Powell's named was omitted and replaced by fast bowler Kesrick Williams of St. Vincent & the Grenadines without any note or explanation given.

Uncapped pair Kyle Hope, Ambris named in WI ODI squad as Kieran Powell, Carter are dropped
