Argentina to miss Russia 2018.
In reply to DAVE400
Not certain yet, I think they still have a game to play
I watched that game against Peru last night, Argentina looked like a school boy team.
Only the front good on that team, but whats the use when you cant get the ball to them. Only solution was Messi taking the ball from the mid field to coordinate a proper attack.
Pathetic strategy too.
Pathetic display, missed some easy clear chances
In reply to DAVE400
No Messi at the WC?
In reply to DAVE400
They should make it, either direct or thru play off.
But the biggest issue Argentina has had is their coaches and not being able to find the best attacking team.
Imagine throughout the last 5 years these are the attackers u had to choose from:
Messi
Higuain
Aguero
Tevez
Lavezzi
Dybala
Icardi
Di Maria
Plus some others, who do u fit them in.
Should've been Messi on the right, Higuain central with Dybala/Aguero on the left.
Have Masch, play d anchor in midfield, Banega/Gago/Pastore one of them being the playmaker and Di Maria driving with the ball from midfield.
Depending on the next set of results, Argentina could be anywhere from automatically in, get the playoff spot, or out entirely.
Would probably be most stunning failure to qualify ever.
I predict they will have to com thru from the playoff spot but they will get it done and qualify for Russia

New Zealand certainly would rather be playing Peru or even Chile or Colombia than Argentina.

England and Italy.
In reply to camos
I remember England missing out in '94 (I think France as well, but I don't recall if either was a powerhouse team at the time).
I don't remember the last time Italy missed out however? Where's the sports trivia folks when you need 'em? Italy's been a good team as long as I remember so it had to have been a shock, whenever that occurred.

Meanwhile in CONCACAF, the Caribbean region's hopes have fizzled out long ago. Guess T&T can try and play spoiler come Wednesday.
Ecuador are notoriously renowned for having one of the strongest home records in international football due to opposition teams struggling to adapt to playing in such unique conditions.
Ecuador's ground in the capital is situated 9,127 feet above sea level - although there is a suggestion that teams could be starting to adapt as Brazil, Chile and Peru have all won there in this campaign.
However, if you eliminate their home form in this campaign, Ecuador have only lost three of their 37 World Cup qualifying games at home since 2000, including two wins and a draw against Argentina.
Furthermore, two goals in two minutes gave Ecuador a shock 2-0 win over Argentina in Buenos Aires at the start of the campaign.
Will Argentina handle the pressure?
If not, a World Cup without Lionel Messi will become a reality.
In reply to DAVE400
indeed. this will be a sad day
In reply to steveo
Based on current form...goalless at home to Venezuela and Peru, I wouldn't expect too much on the road against Ecuador.
In reply to DAVE400
Likely.
Goes to show how much of a TEAM sport is football is. These days though, the marketers instill in us the superhero thinking, but its always team, team.
In reply to steveo
You have confused the Zlatan (tm).
Holland is out too. Even with a win against Sweden they need to overturn a 12 goal difference...they would have to win 6-0 on the road to Sweden.
With a home game against Kosovo, Iceland look set for first ever world cup. Keeping my fingers crossed for Wales too.

Tina has not been a powerhouse of late.
In reply to DAVE400
WTF that's 2 of my favorite WC teams every WC right there, only Germany and France left for me.
Was never a Brazil or Italy band-wagonist,especially during the days when everyone's team was Brazil and Italy, inspired by but much long after Pele and Rossi heroics ...
One other team we know for sure not going to Russia is Trinidad.
Trinidad people like to talk as if they have players that graced Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester when in fact they are all talk and have nothing to show for it
What a bunch of losers. If it wasnt for a little bit of oil they would be dogs of the Caribbean
In reply to Prako
Ouch!!!
In reply to Prako
Jackass make to brayyyyyy
In reply to Prako
Australia of the Caribbean..
In reply to Scar
As the tournament's last beaten finalists and a two-time champ, I think they still get the benefit of the doubt despite a pretty subpar campaign by their standards.
But let's just say "big name" team and that's fine too.
Prako you're rough, heh. But alas, they're the standard bearer for the English-speaking Caribbean region. Everyone else is small fry.
In reply to Prako
What a rabid hater, like you got sen back, see your type here everyday husslin a lil livin off Trinidad back, always happy to assist though...
Allyuh so meek and mild on the ground here, tell your countrymen to join you and speak up,mind you fall in the hole you trying to dig for T&T.
In reply to che
We know you would be amused by that, little simpleton Cuck.
In reply to johndom90
In South America they does make dem wife too,and dey does still bray..
In reply to Prako
Big chunk of insecurity there, eh Chief?
In reply to DAVE400
Will try and stay up for the Ecuador v Argie match tonight.
In reply to DAVE400
T&T or USA tonight?
Bloody hell. Sweden have to be nervous as ra$$ now.
Portugal have moved into the drivers' seat in their group.
In reply to Tryangle
You need to explain this play-offs thing...why should the Swedes be nervous? Or you think the Dutch can put 7 pass them?
In reply to NineMiles
Only because they knew they had a seven goal cushion to work with.
But after two goals were put past them, they may start feeling nervous, and if they get more tense, they may concede a few more.
It would be an epic collapse from a certain playoff spot (and potential automatic if France fell) to not even making the playoffs.
Can't see Sweden conceding 5 more, but stranger things have happened? A red card would really put the pressure on.
In reply to Tryangle
I see. Can't see the dutch scoring 5 more either. The French and Swedes are safe... well, for a play-off place in the case of the Swedes.
The playoff draw is going to be interesting. Which team will have to play Italy?
Who would relish their chances against a Greece (or Switzerland)?
Could Ireland be paired up against Northern Ireland?
Looks like Portugal will be going through outright after scoring a second goal...beautiful move involving Moutinho and Bernardo Silva and finished nicely by Andre Silva.
The referring has been very poor in this match though!
In reply to Tryangle
Now that would be interesting!
No one will want to face Italy of course.
In reply to NineMiles
One of my good mates flew over to watch the Portugal game and is going to stick around for Benfica's next game.
He's going to be in a very good mood.
In reply to Tryangle
Of course Bermuda is full of Portuguese right?
In reply to Tryangle
Madonna is in the stadium and seems to be enjoying Portugal's performance this evening! Take it she now has a Portuguese hubby!
In reply to NineMiles
Oh yeah. A good number of people with Azorean heritage live here.
The Sangres will be flowing here this evening, it looks like.
In reply to Tryangle
Full-time and Portugal are heading to Russia!
Chile is playing Brazil in Brazil.
Argentina HAS to win tonight...a win will put them safely in a qualifying position, a draw joint fourth with Chile and Columbia...a loss near out of a World Cup play.
Argentina in sixth position is totally out of a World Cup position. THEY NEED A WIN TO PUT THEM IN CONTENTION.
Gosh....a lot happening already after 20 mins in the Ecu v Arg match. Arg leading 2-1, both goals from Messi. Ecu scored first though in the 1st minute.
T&T take lead...own goal by a useless US defender
Messi saving the Argies with a hat-trick...3-1.
A one man team!
Messi!!!!!!
If Chile concedes another one they are out.
The latest results shows that Uruguay is the second South American team to qualify with a 4-2 victory over Bolivia putting them on an unassailable 31 points second to Brazil on 41
Argentina goes to a third placed 28 points and has qualified ...Columbia fourth ...Peru goes to the playoffs and Chile, the Copa Champions and only team to beat Brazil in these qualifiers, are out of the World Cup 2018
In reply to analyst-kid
Yup...Chile are Copa America specialists it seems...
Sad though...they have a very talented squad.
In reply to Prako
Fcuk off Mr Minus 2%.
Argentina has qualified! God Bless Messi! All haters shut the fack up now
In reply to problemjay
He is a boss. He has risen to the occasion when needed most. He is a class act. Blessings.
Guess T&T can try and play spoiler come Wednesday.
Okay, I really didn't see that coming

As for Messi... well once again he shows himself to be an all-time great.
Who'd have thunk it, both confederation champions in the Americas, USA and Chile, will not be taking part in the World Cup.
In reply to Tryangle
Who would relish their chances against a Greece (or Switzerland)?
Could Ireland be paired up against Northern Ireland?
The seeded teams for the Euro playoffs are expected to be Italy, Switzerland, Croatia and Denmark. So we prob won't get that intra-Ireland matchup. But we could get a Scandinavian derby. Or a Greece-Switzerland matchup (prediction: 0-0 both legs)
now bring home the wc , messi
In reply to doosra
No South American team is winning a WC for some years to come, and when Europe don't win it it will be Africa.
In reply to granite
I don't know about Africa - there's no top-tier African side at the moment and maybe their best shot was during the 'glory years' of Ghana (who had their moments) and Ivory Coast (who didn't get it done when they were in the WC)
In reply to DAVE400
argentina in. messi 3 goals last night.
standings
In reply to DAVE400
Quality goals from Messi. I hope the whole team gets invested in the cause instead of it being a Messi thing.
I like how Brazil is looking, seeing some very unselfish play from them, taking the extra pass to make a 30% shot into an 80%er.
In reply to Tryangle
Yuh hav eto excuse granite. The youngster is known for making idiotic comments
