HEADLINE: CARICOM leaders to meet ICC on future of Windies cricket

CaribbeanCricket.com 2018-03-02 07:16:30

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) – CARICOM leaders will meet with the International Cricket Council (ICC) next month in London to discuss their recently adopted position on the future of West Indies cricket, as they step up pressure on embattled Cricket West Indies (CWI) ito restructure its governance.

St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, chairman of CARICOM’s Prime Ministerial sub-committee on cricket, will lead a small delegation of regional leaders who will sit down with cricket’s world governing body in an attempt to convey the “desperate urgency” of the changes required.

According to Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, Dr Keith Rowley, CARICOM leaders had adopted legal advice at the two-day Intersessional in Haiti earlier this week, concerning CWI’s right to manage the “public good” of West Indies cricket.

Rowley had indicated last July that CARICOM had sought legal advice and had been assured there was a case to be argued on the basis of CWI, as a private entity, continuing to manage a public good.

“The Heads have now taken a decision that we will now, on the basis of our legal advice – which we have adopted at this meeting – we will approach the ICC and indicate to them the position of the Heads of Government of the region, with respect to our adoption of this position of this public good,” Rowley said here.

And we trust that in approaching the ICC – to the extent they will talk with us – we will be able to indicate to them … the desperate urgency that is required for West Indies cricket to be saved by this legislative approach to bring best practice to this public good of West Indies cricket.”

Great move, this action is one of the things I have been calling for.

I would caution the delegation to position this meeting with the ICC as simply showing good faith and respect to the ICC, BUT NOT ASKING OR SEEKING THEIR PERMISSION.

When Indian and Pakistan Governments took action against their venal cricket boards, the ICC could not bark and I suspect they will try to bark knowing our weak status.

I urge the CARICOM to be firm with the ICC, letting them know they are partially responsible for the mess of WI cricket, by tolerating and protecting a corrupt board with an outdated and irrelevant governancce structure.

This is indeed an Excellent move by
the Regional Governments .

WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THE ARROGANT;

CANTANKEROUS , EGOTISTICAL , PEOPLE

Let me once again state that it is
High time that :

WE GET RID OF THE MIMIC MEN & THEIR

19th CENTURY THINKING .IT IS TOTALLY

ASININE THAT AN ENTITY FORMED IN

1928 OR 1928 , HAS BLUNTLY REFUSED TO

CHANGE ITS ARCHAIC STRUCTURE .

This is despite every few years fooling the People of the Region by
Commissioning Several Reports and then Ignoring them .

IF THE ICC REFUSES TO HEED THE ADVICE

OF THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENTS THEN THE

GOVERNMENTS MUST TAKE THE WICBC/CWI

TO COURT .

My take is that the WICBC/CWI has got
to Big for its Britches ; so the only
solution is to Cut it down to Size .

Caribbean leaders should be focused on fixing their country's economy and let cricket be cricket!

Typical tired old response. Are these two issues mutually exclusive?
can't the Caribbean "leaders" do both?

CARICOM leaders sure welcome the distraction provided by the cricket issue ,because CARICOM is a useless vehicle that has refused to tackle the issues that are its responsibilities.

According to Golding, ( former Jamaica's PM) it is not just the economic imperatives of Caricom that have suffered, but there have been some serious cultural and political issues. He stressed that at the root of the 15-member regional bloc's problem is insularity, a parochial mindset, mistrust and jealousy, “all neatly wrapped up in some inward-looking concept of sovereignty”.

Are Muddies and Yardies still being benched in Bdot? Tell dem to fix dat!

Is Yard still bending over re trade? No interest there?

Wat about the crime problem, Rowley not growling about dat?

When last you see dem leaders multitasking?

He said Caricom states remain on the defensive about their individual independence because it is felt that it is a betrayal of country to fully embrace integration.

He posited also that there is some deficit in the impact of the leadership of Caricom, with a gap having been left after the departure of heads such as Eric Williams, Michael Manley, Errol Barrow and more recently PJ Patterson

These latter day leaders have lots of work to do and certainly cricket shouldn't be a priority right now - methinks!

Not one of them can command attention or presence on the world stage, yet they running to ICC!

They should be inviting people like Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, Saudi Prince, Alwaleed bin Talal, et al for talks instead of running off to ICC.

Moreover, they should be tracking the Singapore model for development.

If they think the plantation mindset will take us any where in the 21 st century they are living in a fool's paradise!

Let cricket be cricket!

Is the goal of the CARICOM governments to restructure West Indies cricket administration? Or fire the current administration? Not sure what the objective is.

Perfect reply, thank you

People who keep saying CARICOM cannot run their own countries so they should stay out of the "WICBC business" are really pathetic and they are part of the problem.

Its like saying the victim of a brutal crime should not go to the police because the police is no good.

Stupid eediots cannot see fixing bad institutions is part of the peoples business and if it is the peoples business then it is CARICOM's business.

The WICBC do not own WI cricket, it is not their company or product or property to do as they see fit.

Very Well stated , unfortunately many
here and in the Media have been brainwashed by the Mimic Men .

Yamfoot 2018-03-02 17:47:08

Not sure what this would achieve. What is government’s role in West Indies cricket?

camos 2018-03-02 17:48:24

In reply to Emir

The issue is not that we don't think West Indies cricket needs fixing, and this is an urgent need, the problem as we see it is that CARICOM is a bigger fraud than CWI.

Well that is simply not true and it is total bullshit.

Here's the facts:

1. Every country in the region have a democratically elected government and they can be voted out.
2. Every elected member of parliment have a code of ethics to follow and though many are corrupt, they can technically make jail for ethical issues, face public shame and be fired by their party and their careers can be ruined

1. THE WICBC is a dictatorship and an old boys club forged from old British mores. No democracy there and there is no consequence for corruption and mismanagement.
2. The Board and Executive have on moral and ethical codes to follow, they are answerable to none and
accountable to no one and the people cannot vote for who goes on the board and the executive.

Now, I can go on and list a few more facts, but somehow I do not believe the WICBC fans and those who hate the players will still not see the truth.

I am in agreement with your assessment above . My expectation is that meeting
with the ICC , is but the first step .

It is very interesting that when the Supreme Court Judges were verbally slapping around the BCCI in Court , the latter wanted the ICC to intervene , in the Court Proceedings , the ICC
despite perpetually stating :

" GOVERNMENTS MUST NOT INTERVENE

IN CRICKET " ; WERE NO WHERE AROUND .

When the government of Guyana took
the GCB to Court , the WICBC/CWI &
the ICC were no where in sight .

As I have often stated in this Forum ; the President of Pakistan fired the
PCB ; ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS . He
appointed a Chairman , and an Ad Hoc
Committee to govern Cricket in Pakistan until there were Fresh Elections for Officers .

What I gleaned is that Governments can fire Cricket Boards for malfeasance ; Governments can themselves perpetually run Cricket in
their respective Countries .

IN ESSENCE CRICKET BOARDS ARE NOT

SACRED COWS , THEY CAN BE DISMISSED

IF THEY FAIL IN THEIR OBLIGATIONS TO

THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES .

THE WICBC/CWI AINT IMMUNE FROM BEING

FIRED FOR THEIR PERPETUAL FAILURES

IN ENSURING THAT OUR PLAYERS ARE

PROPERLY PREPARED TO BE FULLY

COMPETITIVE IN THE INTERNATIONAL

CRICKET ARENA .
