Nice...Is this also the team Worrell played for?

After nearly 60 years!! I guess Sobers will be pretty well choked up. Will always remember that fateful evening when Roy Lawrence announced his death, followed by LLoyd Hall's organ recital

I heard a lot of great hopes for him.

Why until sixty years later?

Collie Smith was ALWAYS my Hero , He
once hit either Statham or Truman , I really believe it was Statham for 6
in a match ; my understanding was that the ball hit a Church Steeple in England .

I was very sad to hear of his death . It was exciting in those days hearing
on radio , the exploits of Our Players
in Union Island , one of the Grenadines , where my Mother's Parents
lived .

My brother & I used to go to the Police Station , and listen to the
Radio Broadcast there .

Well deserved tribute even after almost 60 years. I came to admire this man so much when in 1964/65 I came across a copy of a magazine called Caribbean Challenge which my father had saved. The magazine had an article on the life of Collie and I was very impressed with the man. I remember the article mentioning that when the rescuers arrived at the scene of the accident Collie told them to go check on 'the big guy' Dewdney, because he may be worse off. I recall that in 2nd Form we were asked to write an essay on a Jamaican you admired. I wrote about Collie using the magazine article as a source and got a grade of 91/2 out of 10.

I read where the late Locksley Comrie of Boys Town described Collie as the most Christ-like person he had ever met.

My father frequently told us about the legend. A folklore actually.
Was there some controversy?
1. He was going to be a better player than Sobers.
2. Some lack of clarity about the accident. Was Sobers also in the vehicle?

I believe Sobers was the driver.

Thanks. Getting old and was told the story at age 8-10 period.
Somebody wrote about the enormous feelings of guilt in a cricket book written in the 60s. Maybe Sobers book?

hubert 2018-03-20 12:48:34

Sorry I can't be there. Was my favourite player, an Idol. Great personality too. I still have a small scrap book
that I made of Collie...one of the few things I saved from my long lost cricket library.

My friend Jeff told me he used to listen to cricket with you. He is the same guy who stole your chickens.

Now you see I was not fibbing before.

Is Tom Dewdney still alive, I heard stories about Collie and Garry , they were like twins inseparable.

So Maas Hubert do you have any personal stories of Collie? would be interested to hear your observations.

I also address this question to other respected elders such as DonD, Ewart and NP.
