HEADLINE: Sir Andy Chides WIPA For Poor State Of West Indies Cricket

Former West Indies fast bowler and the first Antiguan to represent the senior regional team, Sir Andy Roberts, believes the body charged with representing players from the Caribbean has been more of a hindrance than a blessing in the efforts to solve issues plaguing West Indies cricket.

Sir Andy, who claimed 202 wickets in 47 Test matches and 87 wickets in 56 One Day Internationals, accused WIPA (West Indies Players Association), of babying players and making it difficult for coaches to perform their duties.

“You get some hard-nosed [strict] coaches, some of the former players and you get the board out of the way, and also you get WIPA out of the way, because some of the things that the former players would say to these current players, WIPA maybe, would object to some of the things. But these guys need to be spoken hard to because they must realise it is not a bed of roses. It is hard work, it is commitment and you have to make sacrifices in order for you to get to the top and stay at the top,” he said.

Sir Andy believes, however, that WIPA is just as responsible for the behaviour of some players and that coaches must be able to exert pressure on players who are not living up to expectations.

“WIPA has always been a problem, especially when [Dinanath] Ramnarine was around because you couldn’t talk too hard to the players, you couldn’t say the players were faking injuries or else they would want to take you to court. So these are some of the things that need to be done, some hard decisions must be taken in order for these players to realise that they can’t just come and mock around,” the former player said.

Sir Andy , Dinas worked within the dimensions of agreements between the WICB and WIPA.
One cannot sign agreements without truly understanding the commitments. We need to look at the administrators
that agreed to such, its obvious WIPA took advantage of
such clowns.

Blaming Dinas, is an insult to the individuals
that represented his organization when drafting such agreements with the WICB.

The above is factual, since WICB violated these agreements on numerous occasions which resulted in arbitration victories against the WICB.
Even when such agreements expired, the WICB allowed it to be operative, until a High Court struck it down.

Me tinks, you should direct such question our two self anointed pseudo intellectuals,ie courtesy and sudden.

I am sure the former will have an explanation, why St Lucia gave such "Sir" designation to Hunte?

Could have been a slow day on the island also and someone needed to be busy.

The old school ways that Andy Roberts is suggesting to use to get the present guys motivated does not work well with this generation, for example the Bravo brothers, Pollards and Simmonds, if you speak in an offensive way to these present players they will just leave.

You are correct. The days of telling players they should be happy to represent their country are over. Nowadays, players are more interested in securing their financial future.

Here comes Andy with his plantation management methods, kids these days have multiple options, in addition, there is no guarantee that if you work hard the board still wont dislike you. Ramdin comes to mind.

I once advise that Andy should keep his mouth shut, every time he opens his mouth, he diminishes his cricket legacy, I mean it almost as if he is wanting massa day to return
