The Shannon Gabriel paradox

excellent read and analysis

But then you look at Gabriel's returns. Only one wicket in that spine-stiffening, heart-thumping, goosebump-cajoling spell of four overs on the second evening. Four for 100 from the Test overall . A Test from which, two years from now, you might remember only Gabriel, and nothing else.

Perhaps learning to utilise small variations in delivery point might be valuable?

I also remember there was a time when Fidel Edwards always seemed a hair's breadth away from running through the opposition top order. Big Benn went through a patch too where he just seemed to keep beating the edge with his good deliveries but couldn't make it count often enough.

Shannon Gabriel's problem is, and has always been, poor seam position. He grips the ball like he's throwing a stone so every delivery comes out with a scrambled seam. Until he learns how to get the ball out his hand with a straight seam, any movement he gets will be pure coincidence if he gets any movement at all.
