West Indies or Windies- who changed our name?
In reply to Chrissy
The first time I heard the West Indies referred to as windies during the Packer days by some asshole Aussie commentator. At the time I thought it was out of disrespect than admiration.
In reply to Toney
Yep
Then one of the Board Presidents wanted to call us Kingfisher WestIndies - that backfired and now this crap.
In reply to Chrissy
I'm glad I lived through the heyday of "West Indies"
So sad for the "Windies" fans! A set of low IQ losers!
In reply to Toney
My first time i see/heard the word Windies was in the Jamaica Daily News during the Packer Test at Sabina park around 78/79. The headline was "too fast too hot windies on top"
Why are people debating about a name that was given to a geographic region base on a mistake by Columbus, the real name should be the Caribbean XI.
In reply to dayne
Given that Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad are not in the Caribbean Sea, how exactly does that work.
The team's name is West Indies - not Windies.
In reply to Chrissy
Walt a minute...is only now you are aware of the OFFICIal change in name??
Happened since JUne 2017
In reply to Narper
I know - I posted Tony's article on the subject.
In reply to Chrissy
So where is Barbados if not the Caribbean sea.
And why is Guyana not in the Caribbean but in the West Indies...an thought South America
In reply to Toney
Prior to the usage of the nickname Windies, West Indies cricket was often referred to as The Calypso Cricket team. In fact, when we toured Australia in 1960, commentators were beside themselves lauding the calypso cricketers who were here to play bright cricket and were going to revive cricket, following the dismal tour of England to OZ in 58/59. By the early 1960s, Windies was slowly gaining in common usage, oftentimes, not in a dignified manner. An arch critic such as EM Wellings often used the term Windies to demean our cricketers. By the mid to late 60s however, "Windies" was gaining in popularity.

I disagree with Chrissy myself.
Barbados is in the Caribbean sea. Some say eastern Caribbean and sometimes but rarely SE Caribbean as opposed to Western Caribbean. If not, then it must be in the South Atlantic since it needs to have a geographic location.
The West Indies is just a name for a chain of islands located where?
As for Guyana, which is not an island by the way, its location is in South America. They are part of the West Indies team because they can play the game, but make no mistake they are not part of that "Chain" called West Indies
technically and geographically speaking Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago are located in the atlantic ocean and are continental islands, they are connected to the south american continent and all three are from the same "underwater land mass". however politically, culturally and historically they are Caribbean
I think we should just stick with the West Indies, as it covers a type of people more than a location as oppose to Caribbean XI ....not a fan of this nor do i particularly like the contraction of West Indies into windies
In reply to Chrissy
Agree totally. We are the West Indies.
There are two reasons why I passionately hate this name change and will NEVER utter the new one:
1) I feel like it disconnects us from our rich West Indies past. In one swoop we now have a new franchise that STARTED on the day of the change. Gone West Indies!!
2) The public was never consulted about the change, WICB just sneaked it up on us. That's just arrogant and selfish.
WICB, give us back our FREAKING name!!
join the movement: 'giveUsBackOurName'.
I propose we all flood the WICB with emails entitled GiveUsBackOurName..
Better to light a candle than curse the darkness.

Only the whipped commentators toe the Windies line.
Every serious commentator out there still says West Indies.
The TV says WI, which means but one thing.
The twitter hashtags are WIvsXXX. Means one thing.
Its a nonsense by nonsensical businessmen parading as something positive for cricket
Well I thought that the Caribbean name came about to describe a region that was inhabited by the fierce fighters of the past, the Caribe Tribe that resisted the colonial powers. I do not think countries have to be located in the Caribbean Sea to be considered as Caribbean Nations, but I could be mistaken.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Hopefully someone did some marketing research, before changing the name
In reply to Narper
The people talking about the name change are over 50 yrs, someone has to cater to the younger generation.
Windies, West Indies is just a name.
In reply to openning
If they did research then the researcher needs to be fired
The WINDIES twitter is still @westindies
You cant make this stuff UP
Then they tweeted
Windies legend @ivivianrichards promoting ICC Women's World T20 tournament in New York City
Viv never played for the Windies, if the Windies is a new name replacing an old one

I emailed Tony the article writer and here is part of his reply.
I also intend to email WICB. Standby..
In reply to Halliwell
My referent is from a marketing point.
I would not be surprise if a guy at a meeting, just decided a name change would at this time will be good, and the followers agree.
I would still like to hear from a group 19-40 yrs.
In reply to dayne
Would you call indonesia a Caribbean nation? What about Malaysia?
Just asking?
In reply to embsallie
Well an easy answer by asking a question, was the Caribe Tribe ever found in those Countries? Would you consider Guyana to be a Caribbean country?
In reply to dayne
mistake or not it is a name we made great
I sent the following email to wicb@windiescricket.com and suggest the rest of you do something similar.
I am angry about this name change and I vow never to speak or write the new name.
I wince when the commentators use it and chuckle when they slip back to the correct 'West Indies' cricket.
And, why was the public not consulted about the name change? Are we not a component of the stakeholders concept?
This evening, the president was interviewed during the CPL match in Lauderhill. He mentioned moving forward 'West Indies' cricket at least three times. He did not talk about the other marketing name. Which suggests we have an identity crises resulting from this sneaky and arrogant name change.
WICB, please give us back our name now!!
In reply to dayne
So no mention of the Arawaks? After all it is alleged dat de Caribs chased them up the island chain
In reply to Maispwi
Do you know of any other geographic/ maritme location called the Caribbean/ Caribbean sea to exist anywhere else in the World other than the one we all know so well?
I asking for Dayne because he seems to think that Indonesia and/ or Malaysia could be considered part of the Caribbean because Caribs may have lived there at one time or another.
