The is not a dig at the people, most of them are good people.

But, how did Haile Selasie become such a big figure in the religion?

Is there a historical/factual reference that puts him where he is?

Isn't this the same way Jesus and Christianity was propagated on society?

If someone could provide the answer, I would appreciate it.

All religions are born out of mythology. Fact and fiction merge to transcend rational thinking and poof... a new religion... Now let's move forward.

Early philosophy: Marcus Garvey singularly had an important role in the ascension of Emperor Haile Selasie as the Black Messiah. He planted the seed.

Gravey stated: "Look to Africa where a black king shall be crowned. He shall be the redeemer."

Leonard P. Howell, based on Garvey's philosophy and ideologies, organized and assembled persons in Jamaica and was first to preach the divinity of Haile Selassie in the early 1930s in Jamacia. Without Howell, there would be not Rastafarian religion. That simple.

You should also know that Haile Selasie was born (named) Ras Tafari Makonnen. As such Black, you can see the interwoven fabric that is Rasta is much deeper than dreadlocks and weed... (but that is for another thread)

I don't have the time, but google "Leonard P. Howell"... I am sure plenty will come up

Sidenote: Give me Rasta over Catholic any day.

The Lion of Judah is said to be a direct descendant of King David and Jesse his father. That line includes King Solomon and indeed, the Solomonic Dynasty.

Jesus of Nazareth, in his human form, is also a descendant of Jesse.

Selassie was the only African leader to successfully resist European aggression.

Italy were defeated by Ethiopia at Adawa in 1896, but the Italians got their revenge using chemical weapons in the inter-war years. But Selassie got the last laugh, and was reinstated on the Ethiopian throne.

He was special because a large group believed he was special. That is all that is required.

Apply same to Jesus, Mohamed, Abraham etc. For gadsake Joseph Smith founded the Mormon religion based on a fantastical story of finding a gold tablet buried in a box near his home.
Rastafarians trace Haile Selassie's birth lineage back to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba...
If Rasta believed Haile Selasie was the second coming of Christ/God on earth etc., would that not answer all of your above questions?

Please note that Garvey himself NEVER endorsed Selassie as a Black Messiah...furthermore Garvey in his magazine The Negro World blatantly called Selassie a coward for going to the English for help in repulsing the Italian invaders under Mussolini. Garvey's argument was that Selassie should have united the African nations to fight the Italians.

Both Garvey and Selassie are the foundation ( Leonard Howell was a Garveyite) on which Rastafari was built. Both Garvey and Selassie embraced Christianity and the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ. But Garvey condemned Selassie and had no respect for him.

I never buy in to all that 'Haille Selassie as a divine figure' talk nah. I know some Ethopian and Erithean people who say a big fraction of their people hate him. He oppressed different ethnic groups for decades during his time as King. He is more loved by Rastafarians by a lot of Ethiopians who hate him because of what he did to their ethnic group of people.

Ethiopians are people of different ethnic tribes. He did a lot for some but oppressed others. He is a hero to his own tribal people but a villain to others.

I have an Ethiopian friend who absolutely hate this man. And he is from the same country this man is from....but if you listen to Rastafarians you will not think this is possible

Does the word 'sacrament' pop into your head as you ask?

Christians drink wine/eat bread (to "share in the body and blood of Christ")... you understand this
Rasta smokes weed for sacrament and reaches a higher state of consciousness ...

no difference. file under religious ritual/dogma/symbolism

Rastas eat a vegetarian diet, dominated with herbs that promote good health and wellbeing. Foremost among the herbs is mighty ganja, which is also referred to as the “holy herb” or “wisdom weed”

If we can respect the wine. we can respect the Rasta man and his herb.

got to have

analyst-kid 2018-08-23 09:40:44

I can't buy this theory about smoking anything to paying homage to Jehovah...some other god but not JAH/JEHOVAH. I'm not even getting into comparison with the ANNUAL drinking of wine and eating of bread.

Putting smoke in your body is extremely harmful...no way Jehovah would be part of that.

pelon 2018-08-23 10:04:36

In reply to you

Let's not fcuk around, smoke in any form is carcinogenic.

Now comes the position that weed could not be a form of sacrament because "Jehovah would be part of that".
Yet, paradoxically, wine contains alcohol: a deadly toxin. (don't fcuk around that fact analyst-kid, with "wine at sacrament is non-alcoholic")

Why do we pretend to have dominion on the needs/deeds/instruction of a deity??? All religion requires suspension of rational thought... respect RASTA if you want respect for your BS as well.

analyst-kid 2018-08-23 10:14:29

All I am implying is that Jehovah would certainly not be encouraging or upholding harmful practices to the physical body he gave us.

analyst-kid 2018-08-23 10:15:50

What has RASTA GOT TO WITH THIS?

And do you really know Rastafari? From a youth I have studied and embraced Rastafari from the time I was a reggae singer:

1.They are some Rastafari who do not believe in or support smoking atall! They embrace a vegan lifestyle and they consider smoking to be unhealthy....DO YOU KNOW THIS?

I could go on to many other differences between Rastafari but one thing today stands out....young Rastafari today denounce Christianity and hail Selassie as a deity while older Rastafari embrace Christianity and the Bible and accept Selassie as the Lion of Judah.

But remember I gave you background information on the THREE major personality influences on Rastafari namely Marcus Garvey, Haile Selassie and Leonard Howell and I revealed the low regard Garvey had for Selassie whereas Howell the founder saw Garvey as a prophet hailing Selassie as King

Really? But here you are talking about instinct as the determining factor in human behavior while the Bible shows consistently that mans desire is what spurs sin and continue to plunge him into ruin...

14 But each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed* by his own desire.+ 15 Then the desire, when it has become fertile,* gives birth to sin; in turn sin, when it has been carried out, brings forth death.

That is precisely what happened to our first parents...and here you are unable to hold an argument with someone who uses the Bible as the authority on the subject.
