analyst-kid 2018-08-30 00:10:12

Imagine Dwayne Smith sitting down and Holder playing! Holder cahn win a match wid bat or ball for you but yet he is captain!

Leh che and cherrie and de Bajan freaks cuss me now!

sunfish 2018-08-30 00:16:22

Holder sucks in white ball cricket. His record is poor. WICB should start thinking of a replacement for 2019 world cup.

apart from Dwayne smith and Carlos to a much lesser extent we have no T20 cricketers of note....and it has to do with preparation.
our guys are test players, we don't produce T20 players unlike Trinidad and Jamaica all others are masquerading as T20 players, Shai Hope is the only one that looks the part
what we need is a local franchised based league catering to identifying players for the Tridents, whom i am ready to change the name right now

natty_forever 2018-08-30 08:27:47

In reply to hawk… there then needs to be another T20 league, played as regional teams (no foreigners allowed big grin), to identify prospects.

hawk 2018-08-30 08:32:23

In reply to natty_forever

you are correct.
Each territory should have they very own semi pro league...strictly West Indian players, feeder system for the CPL draft, if this is no done now in less than 4 years we will no longer be a force in T2O cricket.

natty_forever 2018-08-30 08:33:03

Imagine Dwayne Smith sitting down and Holder playing

Smith has been in terrible form for some time. Holder has looked better than him with the bat.

The entire team was not well selected. Steve Smith is not a stand out as a T20 player. Guptil, Amla and Hope are quality batters but will struggle to score fast on slow wickets until they have been in for several overs. Surprised that the overseas players selected were so similar in nature. Too many "proper' batsmen at top of order. Might not have been a problem if Dwayne Smith was firing but it seems that his failure to look after his body has caught up with him.

Steve Smith is not a stand out as a T20 player.

You realize Steve Smith first came to be known in international cricket circles mainly due to his performances in IPL?

If by "we" you mean Barbados I would agree with the 2nd part of your commentary, not so much the first. I think that this is a product of several years of Tridents not giving an opportunity to the young players. If you reflect on the successful under 19 team which of the players back then would you have identified as certs to be future T20 stars, Paul and Hetmyer or Springer and Holder. Shemar Springer in particular, despite his obvious talent, has not been given a chance to make a mark - played one game, dropped the next. Compare that to the opportunities given to a Brandon King.

Then of course there are some journeymen that were made for T20 but seem to have been largely ignored. Classic one is Kyle Mayers who would have been the ideal man, with his ability to swing the new white ball like a banana, to invest in as an opening bowler and 6-hitting batsman.

Logic 2018-08-30 13:54:34

In reply to imusic
Yep But for whatever reason, if you look at his recent IPL performances, he has not been a stand out like say a Dave Warner. (I will admit that I have not followed Big Bash to compare.). Not criticising the no.1 rated batsman in the world, just saying that in T20 you need to mix hitters with batters as the batters tend to need some time to get going.

This people can talk a bunch of nonsense, Steve Smith is second to Kohl in all level of cricket, should be the batsman this franchise built around.
He is going thru a bad patch, but I would have in at #3 every day of the week.

Larr Pullo 2018-08-30 14:00:05

In reply to openning

His bad patch started when Holder batted him out of position and he came in with 3 balls left in the innings.

Holder should have moved Shai Hope down the order, not Steve Smith.

Logic 2018-08-30 14:15:39

In reply to openning
Can't argue with that. But this is T20. You need hitters at the top of the order interspersed with the batsmen. Johnson Charles is probably ranked no. 1000 and something in world cricket but guys like him that can hit from ball one or get out are critical. Amla is a world class cricketer too but I dont want him and Guptil opening followed by Hope and Steve Smith. That is not a recipe for big T20 scores on our slow wickets.

Logic 2018-08-30 14:18:14

In reply to Larr Pullo

Yep. More so, Hope needs to sit if we have Amla, Guptil and Smith top of order.

aren't we currently doing better in Test than we are in white ball cricket, we just won and drew our last two series while losing all our white ball cricket series

Tridents management are not duty bound to play Springer or any bajan player for that matter, keep in mind it is not a Bajan team nor is it own by any of us, they play who they think is best on the given day, we have to take care of our player development to such an extent that they are in demand for leagues around the world

analyst-kid 2018-08-30 18:07:33

Still can't understand the fascination with Holder and giving him captaincy esp in a format where he is not boss in like Gayle Pollard Russell and Bravo.

Its not like he is a Lambert or Ganga. Hell he is not even as good a captain as Ryan Hinds!

Fivestar 2018-08-31 01:39:42

I will have to disagree with you regarding Jason Holder's ability. In my view, he is still growing as a cricketer and we haven't seen the best of him as yet.

However, I will agree with you regarding Jason Holder and captaincy. The fact is Holder, Brathwaite and Sammy were appointed West Indies captain for all the wrong reasons.

Redstar 2018-08-31 16:44:53

I think that both Holder and Hope should sit out the game tonight and give some of the others (younger players) a chance, they both have bigger fish to fry with 4 test and 8 ODIs between end of September and December and also in between a few Super 50 games.

problemjay 2018-08-31 18:19:48

Tridents in plenty shit right now. Last year they was saying too much Trinis on the team, now dey begging for Polly to come back and captain big grin

I am questioning Holder's ability in this format of cricket. He is not a world beater like Gayle Pollard Russell DJ Bravo ...he is not as good a bowler or batsman as Carlos in this format either.

But I must admit...as he has improved in test cricket...he will improve in this format.

Sorry mate, No the tridents dont want Polly back he captain the Tridents to second last place last year now the Stars going the same way. His captaincy was poor this year. He needs to leave the captaincy to someone else next year. Ask Darren Ganga his countryman.

Obviously JMO do not go around the globe playing T20 cricket like the others you mentioned, He is the test and ODI captain of a weak team that is enough to keep him going. I dont even know why he took on the responsibility of captaining the Tridents, he should have just played and enjoy his cricket.

Bro, I just tune in and watch Jason bowling, he should really think of playing this format as a Pinch hitter.
His bowling is too slow, with little thinking.

sunfish 2018-08-31 23:24:13

Holder looks at sea in white ball cricket. Captaincy is doubtful, bowling sucks and batting is usually swing and miss.

I hope he's not our World Cup ODI 2019 captain because we're almost certain to loose.

This man should stay away from ODI and T20 because he underperforms every game..

Logic 2018-09-01 00:05:37

The comments regarding Holders captaincy and bowling in this format are very fair but regarding the overall team performance I contend that the biggest problem lies with the overseas batsmen selected. Steve Smith and Amla are in horrendous form and Guptil looks past it. But even if they were all in great form the formation with them coming in one after the other along with Hope is all wrong for T20. None of these guys are hitters. If they stay long enough their scorimg will accelerate but that is not a luxury you can afford for so many pure batsmen. I was at the ground praying Steve would get himself out.... he was struggling that badly.

I disagree with the steve smith analysis when steve smith and Hope started their is the tridents were 3 down for 40 odd in the six over they had to rebuild, I think Smith was batting to team plan anyhow however i agree with the Guptill Amla analysis Guptill only has one score in 6 matches and Amla totaaly struggling. In holders defense it is difficultto captain and defend scores of less than 150 when the pitch is getting better in the second half
