And an even bigger Serena fan. What a class act the way Serena acted during the presentation ceremony.
Felt sorry for Osaka that she was booed. She played better tennis today.

You talking about Serena Williams getting outplayed in America at the US Open, I expected that response from the many Serena followers in the crowd. Also consistent with American sport culture
In reply to Walco
Finesse and smart play Trumps pure muscle and brawn anyday!

Geezer STFU
.you so FULL OF SHIT!!!
Chic's half Haitian!
Serena basically acted like spoilt brat and threatened the umpire.

Americans love the underdog.
In reply to Walco
Naomi was not booed though it seemed that way. It was the USTA reps etc. as they set up the presentation.
In reply to nitro
You sure dont know or ever played tennis. Naomi's game is tailored after Serenas. Power serve with placement, a better than very good backhand and quick foot movement in defense. It is why her dad sought advise from Serena's dad eraly when Naomi first started playing tennis.

What will be interesting will be how she handles Pliskova,Halep,Kerber and Sharapova....Serena is the GOAT because she had to adapt to other players styles...if you notice players beat Serena and struggle against others.
Osaka's victory was a tainted victory because she didn't had to fight to win that second set...she was handed that second set and hence match victory by the referee.
In reply to maj
Serena is a whiny brat ALL the time. She seemed so nice and helpful and kind...as long as she was getting her way or being admired. As soon as attention veered from her she'd become a total nut job.

She was the Ram GOAT today...Stunk up the place with her behavior and got beaten.
She was good for ram goat liver soup today if you don't mind residual roid

I really havent followed much tennis the last five years..the williams sister are great and trailblazers. My fav of all time is Steffi Graff, i would have love to see serena v. Steffi
In reply to maj
She should have retired in her prime and focus on other things.
Graft was a beast with height advantage
In reply to maj
Serena vs Steffi Graf...Serena was 17 in 1999
In reply to Cleg
That's way too kind.
In reply to nitro
Are you suggesting that Serena's game was all muscle and brawn? Think before you answer that one.
But apparently you did not watch the match yesterday. Osaka is 5'11" and has a power game. Don't know what finesse you are talking about ...
In reply to problemjay
Yes, Serena was outplayed yesterday. It happens to the best sometimes and Serena is not yet bacck to 100%.
In reply to Scar
Nice spin but Naomi obviously felt she was being booed. She broke down crying after the boos started during the presentation ceremony and Serena comforted her. Then Serena implored the crowd to stop booing and did not mention the referee once during the awards ceremony. Class act dat Serena.
In reply to analyst-kid
Nothing tainted about that Osaka victory yesterday. Yes, the referee inserted himself into the proceedings, but the eventual winner was obvious even before the referee turned badman.
In reply to Walco
Totally agree! Congrats to Osaka, who dominated the match, and well done to Serena for her post-match congratulations....
But this umpire....
What do others have to say about Carlos Ramos?
"I've sat courtside watching the men ranting at umpires and they haven't been given a violation," added former French Open champion and world number three Sue Barker. "The fact that it was to be a game violation then robbed the crowd of what potentially could've been a third set."
"You can't have one rule for some players and some umpires don't adhere to it and allow players to get away with things. They've just got to be fair to the players. Tennis was the loser and we lost what was potentially a fantastic match. I've never seen anything like it since I have been watching tennis. It was sad for the game."
American 12-time Grand Slam singles champion Bille Jean King, one of the founders of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), backed Williams, saying: "When a woman is emotional, she's 'hysterical' and she's penalised for it. When a man does the same, he's 'outspoken' and there are no repercussions. Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same."

Worst refereeing Ive ever seen ...... the worst !!!

I will admit I have said worse and not gotten penalized. And Ive also been given a soft warning by the ump where they tell you knock it off or I will have to give you a violation. He should have at least given her that courtesy. Sad to mar a well played final that way.
Kristina Mladenovic: Serena is a champion & doesn't deserve it.

If it was mens match, this wouldnt happen like this.
It just wouldnt
Chrissy Evert: "Every coach coaches, the hand signals...You need to readdress the rule. She broke her racquet, warning for sure. But third time, calling umpire a thief, while we hear mostly men say four letter words, I don't think that warranted a game."

When you think youve seen it all in tennis.. you have not. Truly unfortunate that the umpire got involved far too much. Restraint called for. So a wonderful performance by @Naomi_Osaka_ was partly spoiled. She was wrongly gifted a game, but earned the title. A huge new star.

I have heard with my own ears Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and plenty of lesser known players say far worse than thief on the court with far lesser comsequences. #USOpen
And here
In reply to Walco
Osaka fan from de day I first saw her play and she played the better tennis yesterday simple. She is one of the few women who can make Serena back up with her power and movement.
In reply to Oilah
Apparently Nitro-glycerine thinks Osaka keeps Serena on her heels with finesse, not power and movement

In reply to analyst-kid
Thank you.
