Prof Colin McKenzie

mikesiva 2018-10-16 02:01:25

Is it true that he passed away last week?

Seated right

I grew up swimming with him at the SCR pool at UWI. A bright young man, he went to JC, and followed me into the Schools Challenge team, captaining the side to the final. He then went on to become a doctor, excelling at his practice, becoming a Rhodes Scholar, before returning to work at UHWI. A brilliant mind!

It would be sad if it's true...he would be about 50-51.
sad
Chrissy?

Never heard of his passing but a few key physicians have passed recently but no specifics were given by the person I heard from. I'm double checking this now ... with one of his colleagues.

If true a great loss in the medical research community in JA.Colin McKenzie

I do not know Prof McKenzie but I am very familiar with TMRU as both Prof Wilks and Prof Forrester are my heroes. If true this is sad indeed as he was so young.

Yes - on Sunday October 7 from ALS - just 50.
I said hi and spoke to him on the last Thursday in September at a retirement gathering for a good friend.
Colin was a wonderful 'young man' and he was lucky to have such a loving wife.
He actually went to a football match the week he died.
We've lost a good man. His funeral is Thursday at 3.00 in the chapel.

I hinted at this on JahJah's thread about Luton.
Colin was brilliant. He was at Rainford's retirement gathering.
Colin's parents were both Sociologists - Herman was Guyanese and Hermione was Grenadian.

Yes he passed - just heard back from my bestie - Dr. Rainford Wilks — he passed as Chrissy said on 10/7 from ALS and MSA - multisystem atrophy.
He was seemingly ill with those major disorders but lived enjoying himself neverthess.
A major loss to the TMRU ... and UWI research endeavors.
Wilko will extend my condolences to his family. Knew his parents well —back in the day ...

Me and Terrence Forrester were in the same high school class as STGC graduates - O and A levels. His sister and I have maintained a friendship through the years. She had moved to Iowa to work and I did some work there for 2 years and ran into her.

And, Wilko is my bestie from his early entry to UWI Med along with Carlos Escoffery, and Louis Ruddock.

Yes - too sad. I’m at a bit of a loss on this. The brother was so vital to some genetic research going on at TMRU.

Yes in the year I got there late in 74 he was in my biology class but don’t remember if it was 5th form or 4th. He was behind Mike Siva somewhere

Colin was two or three forms younger than me. Captained the schools challenge team to the final where they lost to Munro.

As you guys know a Rhodes scholar in 1991 I think. To my regret i fell out of touch with him when we grew up.

Yep I remember that. Me and Ms Roper HELPED to prepare those guys for SCQ.
Thanks for the reminder. That is back in the 70s to “race course”.

Sorry I didn't mention him when we got together. He would have loved to see you.

Chrissy 2018-10-18 20:38:08

Did you guys know that Colin was the man who made Oxford change their century old rules and allow scholars to be married and have families.
That was one lovely (sad in parts) celebration of his life.
