Often listen to his music. RIp. Baseman, hornerman...

In reply to VIX
You looking for horn boy!!
Great man. May he RIP.
Great calypsonian!!!
RIP
One of the all time greats. After Sparrow and Kitchener he has the largest volume of soca hits. His songs were an inspiration to me growing up as a teenager.
Bass Man, I Come out to play in 1974 to Toe Jam, My Belief...to Obeah Man, Dance Sharlene, Snakes in the Balisier and on and on to Columbus Lie, Dingolay to Stranger, You looking For Horn.....we have lost a Legend to the Art Form of Calypso and the genre of Soca.
I grew up loving his music...Roll De Bumbalum was the first wuk up song I knew and he gave us so much. This is pain to a calypsonian.
I remember seeing him at the Regal Theatre (Kingston)in the late 50's. Used to dance to a lot of his hits.
If I remember correctly he teamed up with Byron Lee also around that time.
RIP

No. I left Jamaica in 61. When I went back in 73 (for 2 years) Jamaican music had taken over.

Good luck on the next stage to the great Shadow. The master of expressing deep thoughts in simple words. A man that made a great journey over his lifetime.

Nice bro. Still coming to grips with this news. Actually backed him up in England in 2000 while touring Europe, and calypso Rose as well. One of my favorite numbers was really 'I come out to play'. Yeah man, a gentle giant. RIP my brother.

wow! great stuff. Was there any complexity to the arrangements?
In reply to VIX
There always is, but Shadow, tho normally simple with his lyrics is very meticulous about his music. Could think of two now; Tension and Feeling the Feeling. Dingolay, oh yeah beautiful.

R.I.P. Shadow...

One of my favorite all time Calypsonians. There is a controversy on who initiated Soca, some say Shorty, Shadow said it was him, but while there maybe some debate as to who initiated soca music there was no debate to the innovation and creativity of the two Maestros.
Daring unique fusion of music that Shadow produced. The Basslines hypnotized you, the beat made you shake a leg and the lyrics kept that one ear engaged while you were wining. Man was a MASTER of the artform. I remember Sparrow said that in 1974 when Shadow came out with 'Bassman' and 'I come out to play' he thought that Shadow would be impossible to beat but somehow the Judges via very controversial decision awarded the Calypso Monarch to Sparrow with 'We pass that stage' and 'Miss Mary. Later that same season Shadow went on to capture the road march aka the people's crown with 'Bassman from Hell'. Sparrow may have been the Judge's choice, but Shadow won the people's hearts.
It would take him another 26 years in 2000 to win his first and only calypso monarch with 'Scratch me back' and 'What's wrong with me'. The latter being a dig at the Judges asking them why it is he could not win...Am I ugly or what? Who could forget that performance with him and his back up singers doing that zombie prance off the stage. WOW! Then in 2001 he became the People's champ again with his second road march win with the welcoming and catchy ' Stranger'. Most recently he made a comeback to the soca Monarch stage with 'What you come here for" Probably his last big hit. His performance left a lot to be desired that night on the Soca Monarch semis as he was clearly not well and out of sync with the music but this would in no way damage his magnificent legacy.
Shadow you Legend!

I couldn't have said it better having said something similar on facebook.
His body of hits impacted throughout the West Indies for over 40 years...no calypsonian impacted more with such a volume of soca and calypso hits from that period 1974 to now more than him...None...most of Sparrows and Kitcheners hits spanned from the 1950s to the mid 1970s

Yeah Man. He was able to remain relevant for over 40 years which is no easy feat. The Man had a big hit as recently as 2016 with 'What you come here for'. His music transcended generations.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Great Interview. The Man lived and breathed music. He said he could leave Calypso but Calypso cannot leave him. Great Inspiration. Need to get his book as I did not know he had written one.
