Glenfiddich 18 is decent.

My uncles used to be Chivas Regal men..that was bout 15 years ago [damn...it's been a while]...and they usually know their stuff lol lol

a few more recommendations

if you get a chance...try the Laphroaig 18.

I got a few shots of Aberlour 12 when my last job partnered with them for a few promo tastings on flights...I never could sweet talk that rep into parting with the entire bottle sad

I had the Glenfiddich 15 years old and I found it sort of strong. Is the 18 better?
I had the Laphroaig, I don't recall what year it was, but it was dam decent!
Also, eXodus, I had the Aberlour 12 awhile back, and it was a treat.
Usually when I go by one of my sisters for Christmas, I would take one of the bottles I want to try so the whole family can get a taste. That year I took the Aberlour 12 and hardley anyone get to taste it properly and my sister hid it away. lol big grin

Have you tried Macallan or Balvenie, try any of these two.
During the year it is good to attend Scotch tastings, it give you a better tasting view of scotches you have not tasted before.
I enjoy Single malts, even the Smokie or Peat.
Try this one Laphroaig

Look here mate, forget the brands you listed above and sit down to a good old WHYTE & MACKAY. Ignore the price and enjoy the smoothness.

I can guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.

Here is an experiment that will floor you. Pour a bottle of WHYTE & MACKAY in an empty Johnny Walker Black Lable bottle and place it on the table for the buddies who claim they only enjoy Johnny Walker. Don't let them know that is what you did.

None of those Johnny Walker Black Label pretenders will know they are drinking WHYTE & MACKAY.

A number of qualify Sommeliers get it wrong, at blind tastings.
The best way of knowing, is to try various products.
Between 1985 and 2015, I've attended 20-30 tastings per year, I've learn from one of the Riches guy in Alberta, who told me, not to sell him any wine for $100 or put Louis X11, on any of his function menu.

Our bro, Pelon knows his Rum, the last time I tried that stuff was 1966, Barbados Independent .
The agencies needed me, to buy their products.
BTW, Alberta is the leader, is the privatization od Alcohol, what we call Rum shop in the Caribbean are call Liquor stores here.
Our former drunkard as a Premier, made that possible.
For all the weeders, this province is the place to be, line ups like crazy

Actually it was Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals who partly privatized the sale of booze in Ontario.

And the current Premier was a former hash dealer in Etobicoke during the 80's.

Is the Liquor in Ontario Privatized?
I live in Whitby in 2014-15, alluy stores were still under the LCBO.
My reference is about Alberta, where Individuals own the stores, and you can see a number in every community.
The Late Ralph Klein is the drunkard premier I reference.

Okay. My mistake.

Yes. Under the last liberal govt liquor sale was partly privatized in Ontario where wines and beers can now be sold in grocery stores.

Was it Ralph Klein the one who, for a charity, said he would walk naked and when ppl showed up, he walked his dog, Naked. Of course there were some ppl who complained, but most took it in good spirit.
Most of my liquor tasting is what I buy to give it a try. Once I was buying the Bowmore 12 years to try, and an old gentleman advised me not to, he said it taste like iodine. Well, I should have listen to him. big grin

Anything was possible with Ralph, he was years ahead of Rob Ford.
He closed schools and Hospitals, privatized the liquor board and a group of his buddies now own the medical centres in the province

A good brandy/rum/single malt/scotch/bourbon is the one YOUR palette and pocket prefers.

Openning will tell you based on blind and double blind test: the "best" beverage is seldom the "most expensive" - but down to the manufaturing standards and universal likeability truths.

Like:
"rum should not be sweet"
"A good rum has bite, flavors and with a smoother finish" (rather than bite all the way down)

My preferences have not changed in years...

Rum: El Dorado 15, Ron Zacappa XO
Single Malt: Glennlivet 18

The finest rum I have ever had is Santa Teresa 1796

The best part of stocking your bar is to know what your guest like + generic stuff

Curtis 2018-11-21 17:20:24

How bout falernum and high wine? Alyuh big stagers know that?

eXodus 2018-11-21 17:23:39

Recently a friend and I went to a bar to catch up.....I was having my usual and he was doing the usual IPA thing..

We got around to talking about our mutual friends Jack [Daniels], John[ny Walker] and Jose [Cuervo]. Since moving to Canada, I started hanging out with Jose a lot more and acquired a bit of a taste for it. As we were making our way across the shelf, the bartender gave us both a shot of Goldschlager...something I forgot existed..it was on the milder/sweeter side, but it does have a decent kick to it. Give it a try sometime.

hmm, interesting. Don't u find the Glennlivet 18 kind of a sweetish taste? I still enjoy a fine brandy from time to time. I have a bottle of El dorado 21 since last year and haven't open it as yet...I guess waiting for the right occasion...

I did my service in youth. Now I sit back and sip in moderation.... with the occasional night of debauchery on special occasions.

One cannot "shot" a refined beverage. smile

Of coincidence, I was invited to a dinner last night and was introduced to a very fine sipping, single malt whiskey. Rampur made in India... I had two glasses, but enjoyed sipping and chatting the evening away...

I never though I would enjoy single malt out of India, but was pleasantly surprised. try it.

U know, once I had a whiskey from India and it was aweful, so when I see liquor from there I avoid it at all cost. Thankfully it was free...Whenever I buy liquor and it is no good I don't be happy. big grin big grin
