So I've been reading all kinds of comments about how negative Gayle's presence in the team is because he takes a long time to get going at the top of the order. Now I just did a calculation and realize that Gayle has 185 runs in this series. Those 185 runs were scored off 192 deliveries at a strike rate of 96.35
Are we still gonna say that his impact on the team is negative? Well my thoughts will remain that without Gayle we wouldn't even be in the first game and wouldn't have won this second game. he has 4 boundaries and 16 sixes so far. Onry stays.

Absolutely. Gayle is doing a very necessary job at the top of the order. 70-0 after 15 overs is better than 100-3 after 15 overs

Scoring 360 or 50 off 60 balls is clearly not a problem. The problem is if he bats like he has but is dismissed in around the 10th over... its not just his dot balls but the output of the other bat. its putting too high a value on his own wicket. I think Gayle has to go from the off (well 3rd or 4th over) like he does in T20. If he comes off great if he doesnt then nothing is lost. Simple. In fairness he was better in the 2nd odi.

In reply to mittheimp if we won the first odi he would have been man of the match. We won the second and I think his innings was very important in accomplishing the win. I do understand the back lash of batting so slowly then getting out. So far that has not happened. I think Gayle knows that he can murda this bowling at will....
