... In Jamaica

Police are treating the deaths of Charlie and Gayle Anderson, both originally from Manchester, as suspected murder.

Anderson, 74, and his 71-year-old wife, were discovered on Friday at their home in Mount Pleasant.

The Andersons’ sons said in a statement: “Our parents Charlie and Gayle enjoyed a long and happy marriage of 55 years and leave behind their four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

“They were hardworking people, building a business with integrity and making sure we were always provided for.

“Charlie and Gayle were pillars of the community in Manchester and Jamaica, and were hugely popular and loved by many.

“They were just beginning the next chapter of their lives, retiring to Jamaica before this terrible tragedy.

Home sweet home, Jamaica!

Portland is the quietest parish in Jamaica. We go there every year when we go home.

In 2017 the murder rate was two which was lower than any other parish.

We haven't heard the full story yet. My suspicion is that the killer is known to Anderson. Probably a grudgeful relative.

Read the Gleaner story on this tragedy.

Sad.

Meant to post this this morning. What's scary is that these murders are happening in quiet rural towns. Portland has very low crime numbers.

What's up with yardies killing their relatives? Seems to be a common theme particularly with retirees returning to settle in the yard.

Jamaicans do not seem to care. Successive governments have failed to fix their pathetic justice system.

Where there is no justice there is no peace.

Hate to hear this. Second time in a few months. In Jamaica. Happens elsewhere in Caribbean too.

I think their murders are connected to whoever was stealing their money.

Two British grandparents suspected of being murdered in Jamaica had "dreamed" of moving there, neighbours have said.

Charlie Anderson, 74, and his wife Gayle, 71, from Gorton, Manchester, were found dead after recently retiring to the Caribbean island.

Their former neighbours said the couple had "saved all their lives" to afford a large house on the island, which Mr Anderson had built himself.

It has been reported locally they had recently called in police to investigate money they said had been fraudulently taken from a credit card.

Neighbour Charles Burey said: "He told me about money which was taken either from his account or his [wife's].

Jamaican police revealed their house had been set on fire, and the couple suffered neck and face injuries.

Spokesperson Throyville Haughton said: "Their house was partially burnt; however, one room was totally destroyed by fire.

"We observed... injuries to their neck and faces; however, we are not able to say at this time what caused these injuries."

The couple's deaths come as Jamaican authorities seek to tackle a crime wave which has resulted in more than 1,600 murders in 2017.

So far this year more than 600 people have been killed.

Jamaica is clearly a very unsafe place for returnees! sad
