ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Windward Islands Volcanoes veteran left-handed opener Devon Smith and Leeward Islands Hurricanes champion off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall were the top individual performers who led the incentive award winners in the recently-concluded 2018-19 West Indies Championship.

Smith, who holds the record for the most runs in a single season, gathered 745 runs in nine matches at an average of 43.82 to top the batting aggregates for the fifth straight season.

He and fellow veteran opener Montcin Hodge of the Hurricanes were the only two batsmen that cracked the 700-run club for the season.
Smith again earned the Vivian Richards Award for the most runs in the season and a US$1500 cheque.

Cornwall collected exactly 54 wickets at 17.68 apiece in nine matches to finish with the most wickets in a season for the first time. He earns the Courtney Walsh Award and a US$1500 prize.

Congrats to both indeed, Smith should be admired for staying motivated at this stage of his career. It is ironic that, Smith always appear to be one of the fittest players in the region, but Cornwall appears to be the opposite.

In reply to imusic … who more likely to succeed at the highest level, the one supremely fit or the one alleged to be not?

solidrock 2019-03-28 10:26:44

Congrats to all winners of awards.

Without apology, I look forward in the next months to the rise of Cornwall to ongoing International status playing Test and 50 over cricket for the West Indies. Give him the chance to fail or rise to star status. [When he does succeed some physical fitness experts might lose some pay big grin ]

Unfair question. We know how Devon performed at the highest level. We’re yet to see how Rahkeem does in that arena

natty_forever 2019-03-28 10:50:41

In reply to imusic … suh we can conclude, being fit doesn't mean you going perform at the highest level.

lol

Neither does claiming you’re a batting manual cool

Cornwall collected exactly 54 wickets at 17.68 apiece

Why the qualification?

Congrats to Devo Smith and Rahkeem Cornwall

Year after year these two guys make a tangible contribution the regional cricket.

I hope with a new President Cornwall gets a break into the senior team

President?

And I thought he was just a captain (who declared his innings closed just to give away the coveted 3rd place to BIM in the just concluded regional competition).

Ok, I get it. President to be, because he carries the right passport.

Baje 2019-03-28 14:54:54

Cornwall would be in my limited overs teams

imusic 2019-03-28 14:58:26

At least give him an opportunity. And as it should be with all players, try to put him in the best position to succeed.
