"Many people still do not get how big this is," then-US Ambassador to Guyana Perry Holloway told a reception in the capital, Georgetown, last November.

"Come 2020, GDP will go up by 300% to 1,000%. This is gigantic. You will be the richest country in the hemisphere and potentially the richest country in the world."

After the governing coalition lost a no-confidence vote in December, rather than call elections it challenged the vote in the courts.

That has led to protests.

"All we're asking for is for the government to respect our constitution," a demonstrator tells me, standing on the road outside Guyana's ministry of the presidency. "They just want to remain in power and control the oil money," she adds.

The legal battle has continued and this week the Caribbean Court of Justice is hearing the latest appeal in the case.

It is very possible that Guyana, back in the 70s when Massive amounts of oil and natural gas was discovered in Trinidad they had the second highest GDP in the Western Hemisphere.

Actually TT's oil industry dates back to 1910. The first labour riots here started in the oil fields in the 30s. But oil only became extremely lucrative for us post independence. Natural gas was monetized in 1993/4 to offset the effects of low oil prices. It is not a panacea for social ills however. When Trinidad's economy grew by 8% in 2008, we had our highest murder toll ever-550 homicides. A word to the wise. Also guinea and nigeria squandered their wealth with little development(human or otherwise) to show for it, in the case of Guinea and totally unplanned development like nigeria(lagos is a great example). They need to be very careful with their revenues

Even if that was possible – you guys would find a way to eff-it-up --- you don’t have ample – yet you leaders are always squirreling as much as they can for themselves --- if your suggestion was even probable – can you fathom the hording and stashing that your people in control would be doing ---- there are not enough goose to lay sufficient golden eggs --- its in the DNA --- wink wink

It would be good if Guyana just become a decent country again, where the infrastructure improves.people paint their houses that need it and the streets are okay to walk after. dark

You must be a genius. How did you discover this method of writing without complete sentences and full stops?

Does the number of dashes after each phrase have any significance?
