West Indies can still qualify for the semis

If the following happens:

- South Africa beat New Zealand today
- West Indies beat New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan
- Australia beat Bangladesh
- South Africa beat Pakistan
- Pakistan beat New Zealand
- Sri Lanka beat South Africa
- Afghanistan beat Pakistan
- Australia beat New Zealand
- India beat Bangladesh
- England beat New Zealand
- Pakistan beat Bangladesh
- Australia beat South Africa

This would leave New Zealand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and South Africa equal on 7 points, with WI on 9 points (assuming we lose to India). If New Zelaand win just one of their other remaining matches, they will go through with a superior NRR, if we don't beat India. If we lose to New Zealand then we will have to beat India and rely on NRR. Even if we win all of our matches and New Zealand win just two, they will likely go through on NRR. If we lose to New Zeland and they also win even just one of their other remaining matches, then that's it, all over - we'll be going home.

If the likelier results happen where New Zealand beat Pakistan, South Africa beat Sri Lanka, Pakistan beat Afghanistan, and Bangladesh beat Pakistan, then WI, NZ, Pak, SA, and Ban will all be equal on 9 points and it'll boil down to NRR. So again, New Zealand will likely go through.

To make it easier, we will need to win all of our remaining matches, including India, improve our NRR against the likes of SL and Afgan, and hope that New Zealand don't win three of their five remaining matches, starting with South Africa today!

Tough ask! sad

I have modest expectations, I would like for them to just win their next match. one win at a time, hopefully the coaches are working overtime on good strategies.

A win against New Zealand is crucial.

It is possible even if it is not probable.

Right now, SA, Pak & WI are fighting NZ for the 4th spot.

Should NZ lose all their remaining matches, and this could happen, it open things up for all these 4 teams.

NZ however, seem that luck is going their way; Washout against India and winning the toss today- most crucial toss in the tournament thus far.

After today's game, we'l have a more accurate feel for thinghs

do they deserve to be in a semi-final?

In reply to Raggs

"Deserve" is overrated..If they win enough and have enough points, they should..

In sport there are come backs and not coming back and we both know what section the windies sit quite comfortably in.

I was juss looking at the match results.

West Indies won one (1) match, and that against SA who everybody beating like a step chile.
Doubt whether WI could have beaten them if they applied themselves.

Another school of thought is that Otis said, here take this one as a gratitude for WICB helping him move up the career ladder. razz

Yeah that's true. WI may not have even beaten SA if that match was completed.

We won against Pakistan. The S.A. match was washed out.

natty_forever 2019-06-19 16:04:41

And we could have won easily.

I really thought it was SA who they beat.

Well, it was Pakistan. Same difference, without the Otis factor.

gvenkat 2019-06-19 19:23:27

WI will lose to NZL and will crash out. Bangladesh is the only other contender for the semi-finals and even they have a tough road, Their washout against SL will come back and bite them

West Indies are OUT.

NZ however, seem that luck is going their way;
LUCK?

NZ just put a calculated whipping on SA... that's not LUCK my fren....

Hopefully you haven't depended on LUCK all your life to get where you are today...

Grab the bull by the horns..... life is more rewarding that way!

Now what?

Seeing as New Zealand have beaten South Africa, we now definitely have to win all of our remaining 4 games and work on NRR. Whilst doing so, we have to hope New Zealand lose their remining matches.
