Windies fans upset over Afghans treatment
West Indies fans attending the final match of their team's World Cup campaign against Afghanistan at Headingley in Leeds on Thursday left upset because of the treatment meted out to Afghan fans.
West Indies defeated Afghanistan in their final match of the tournament by 23 runs, but the Afghan fans still enjoyed themselves at the game, as their team fought back well against the two-time World Champions.
According to West Indies fan Nicole Villaroel, the security officials supervising the stands were very aggressive and unkind to the Afghan fans. She said, "We are not happy at the treatment that was given to the Afghanistan fans at the match. All they were doing is supporting their team like all the other fans. The security really put them under pressure and left them uncomfortable. It was as if they were being targeted by the security guards on duty."
She continued, "At the end of the day they are human beings just like the rest of us and they are well within their rights to enjoy themselves in a public space without any harassment. They didn't abuse anybody, they didn't heckle the players or throw anything at anyone. They were just enjoying themselves and making a lot of noise. There was no limitation as to the noise one can make at the matches as fans, so this can't be the reason the security was constantly coming at them and harassing them to stop making noise. Is as if they making every effort to muzzle them which made the mass of West Indies supporters at the Fred Trueman stand very upset.
