West Indies fast bowling great Andy Roberts has hailed star batsman Chris Gayle as one of the game’s ‘great players’ but is convinced the time is right to walk away.

The 39-year-old Gayle had initially revealed plans to retire from international cricket following the ICC World Cup but seemed to have a change of heart just ahead of the tournament.  The batsman instead targeted the regional team’s home series against India as possibly his final matches for the West Indies.

The batsman did not, however, have an outstanding World Cup, scoring a total of 242 runs in nine matches as the team limped to a ninth-place finish.  Roberts, however, does not believe the player’s form merits immediate selection to the squad for the series.

Gayle grasping at straws.
he should do himself a favor and retire from international cricket.
Teams will contract him for gate receipts and the cameo innings.
he is done. He cannot move nor run singles so why pick him?
Let the younger kids move up and establish themselves.
It is a shame he is pandering to the CWI to keep him.

He is looking for a World Boss send off at Sabina Park. They could give him a ceremony, but I guess that's not enough for him, he wants to be in the game, however with no one established in the 2nd opening position he could get his way.

In the last CPL we had many an opener with decent performances.
India uses IPL to unearth talent so why should we not do the same?
Gayle is done.
His skills has diminished so that he cannot run a single.
Did you bat same way for Chanderpaul at same age?
Chanders batting wise was more competent than Gayle and better physically yet WI dropped him.
Gayle wants to have the final say unlike the Richards, Laras, Greenidges etc who were dumped by the WICB.
