WI Team Has No Match Winners
In reply to sudden
Stats and correlation coefficients don't lie. Just look at the ICC player rankings for West Indian players for all formats.
It's a sorry state of affairs.

Are you saying the universe boss is not a match winner
In reply to silver
He has played in 300 ODI matches. Let us look up how many he has won for West Indies or how many West Indies have won with him on the side.
Better yet, let's look at the ICC ODI Player Rankings.
Chris Gayle is not even in the TOP 40.

who is a matchwinner?
or
what is a matchwinner?
a match winner is like a good contractor;he makes sure the job is completed
In reply to sudden
but we do have players in this team with that capacity...they did previously
Hope had a good series in India.
Hety did too. And Hety had a good home series against England? He scored a matchwinning 100.
Gayle of course.
I think you mean on form?
In reply to sudden
By that definition West Indies has not produced a "match winner" of recent vintage so it can not fairly be attributed only to Gayle.
How many games, period-in any format- has the West Indies won in the past 25 years with or without the likes of Lara, Walsh, Ambrose, Gayle, Hooper, Holder, Brathwaite, Hope etc?
By this definition the great George Headley was himself not a so-called "match winner"!
i wasnt talking about Gayle alone; i was talking about the entire team.
nobody grabs the game by the scruff and say i am going to win this game- no batsman, no bowler and to a lesser extent no fielder.
we simply cant close out a game

consistently and could be different players. you would get one or two good performances a series but nothing beyond that
In reply to sudden
i think you mean a matchwinner mentality [and this i agree with you] - Gayle used to be but he is an ole man now
not the same as a matchwinner [i disagree, we have guys who can win matches]
In reply to doosra
that is a distinction without a difference but i am sure you understand
In reply to sudden
there is a difference
you can have guys who will play and play and some days they will contribute to a win...
but then you have guys whose only/main goal is to win win win [i call them matchwinners]
In reply to doosra
ok ...state it how you will. if we have them we need them to perform on a more consistent basis
In reply to sudden
i am saying if you mean guys who wants to win win win...we do not have them and i support your line of thinking
but we do have a few guys who will win you matches...i listed Hope, Hety - using data from last year...and Gayle has done over and over
i personally feel we must dump the match losers.
We were in a winnable position when Pooran got out and Chase followed suit. I am going to excuse those two...Pooran contributed and Chase lacks experience in ODIs.
But Brathwaite came in and got out quickly....nuff professional and international experience and still losing matches for us. Look give Pollard that play...he is in form.
In reply to doosra
i agree but they are not consistent
matchlosers?
what is it?
west indies
Maybe Team India is too good for us!
They are just too talented.

Problem is that every other Full Member team appears to have a number on the West Indies these days.
It's going to be a tough slog to qualify for the next 50-overs World Cup.
In reply to Tryangle
..and it was indeed a tough slog qualifying for the most recent one hence they had to plead for the geriatrics like Gayle and Samuels to come to bail them out.
With the dismal performance of the current team plus the A team, expect much more of the same!
Face it folks, there are no young Laras nor Holdings waiting in the wings to replace the geriatrics and propel West Indies back to the top of world cricket.
...and yet other units like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan perform above the sum of their parts.
Match winners are always welcomed, what we need more is discipline, professionalism and know-how across the entire organization from administrators to players.
In reply to mkcharles
Lets compare their youth cricket development programs to ours, there we may find the problem.
The players don't put a price on there wicket, barring maybe Shai Hope & Darren Bravo, the latter can't buy a run at the minute and the former has been bowled in 4 of the last 5 ODI's.
The rest don't like getting bogged down and try to slog there way to a win, they can hit the ball but they can't bat.
