Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) CEO Courtney Francis hailed firebrand Windies batsman Chris Gayle as a legendary figure in international cricket, likening his status to that of Trinidad and Tobago’s record-setting, Hall of Fame batting great Brian Lara.
Gayle, who came into the second one-day international (ODI) of the three-match series against India at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on 10,396 runs – nine off Lara’s total, surpassed the Trinidadian’s tally of 10,405 after he posted 11 runs from 24 balls to lift his overall tally to 10,408.
The Jamaican, in the process, became the West Indian with the most runs in one-day internationals.

Gayle deserves credit as a great West Indies player, as does Chanderpaul, Sobers, Kallicharan, Richards, and a few others. But suggesting equality with Lara is a bit much. The two who stand head and shoulders above all others are Lara and Richards.

But all jokes aside, Gayle is ah different kind of great.
I think the writer just wanted to stick it to those who maintain(ed) that Gayle is not a great. Devin comes to mind.

I guess in order to be a president of one of these associations one must be adept at spouting garbage.
First the president of the BCA now the JCA president.
Oh well....

Not the President - that said Gayle is a very good ODI player. He is no Lara.

I stand corrected re the president but the utterance was still nonsense.
Apart from the fact that they both played for the West Indies and batted left handed, there is no comparison between Gayle and Lara.
Gayle is indeed a very good player in all formats of the game.

Truth be told most people, most West Indians including Trinis like myself enjoy watching Gayle play when he is in form and will admit he deserves all the recognition and allocades but most won't compare him to Lara.
Fifty years from now people will still be talking about several of Lara's classic innings. His 277 in Sydney, his match winning 153 in Barbados, both his world records 375 and 401 in Antigua and just his style of batting that brought an excitement to the game. This is not a knock on Gayle's greatness, it's just a different level of greatness. Its like comparing Michael Johnson to Usain Bolt both are great but one's greatness goes beyond statistics.

Gayle had a fantastic inning in Aus , I think 160+ not out to save a game over 8 hours at bat, one of my best Lara inning was against Jamaica where he and that spinner took TT home against Walsh and company.

To an extent. Media houses from the big countries force the narratives about their players and thus make them memorable. Bradman avg 99.sumthing but only played in 3 countries and quite frankly was as ugly to watch as steven smith. But yet Aussie media has an almost cult like view of him which happily force down everyone elses throat

Let's ask an independent observer-->
"I'm definitely up there. I'm definitely up there with the greats without a doubt," said Gayle
There you have it! The Boss is indeed equal to Lara and the greats.Without a doubt.

Gayle will be remembered as a legend of the T20 format. The best ever from the Caribbean.
Lara is hands down the greatest Test batsman to come out of the Caribbean
I dont think Gayle can make the top 10 of the greatest West Indies batsmen in Test cricket.

The "unretirement" after the WC2019 was to get the runs required by Christopher Henry Gayle to be on the same level with Brian Charles Lara.
If only Shiv Chanderpaul was that media savvy.
you saying Gayle un-retired himslef after the world cup just to break Lara one day runs record? nah the big Jamaican cant be so petty to get past a record set by a Trini legend ..ah dont want to belive that

It is pellucidly clear that his expectation was to break the record during the WC. Plans failed miserably during the WC, thereby necessitating the "unretirement" to achieve brownie points.
Why should anyone "unretire" if his goals have been met?
Jaydee, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.
See how he was eating up plenty, plenty balls in his selfish attempt to go across Lara's record line and now that this has been achieved see the difference in batting today...like a deranged hyena.

Headley, 3 Ws, Sobers, Richards and Lara. With all due respect to Chanderpaul, he is not in the class of these guys. He was just a very good player. I wont speak of Gayle.

Remember that Lara said that records were meant to be broken. Kudos to Gayle for sticking to it long enough to eventually break the record. Sympathies to Chanders who also tried to stick it out in order to eventually break the record but did not get hte opportunity to unretire to do so. Kudos to Lara for leaving while at the top and having fans wish for more, secure in himself that he did not have to try to break yet another record for people to remember him or need to market himself incessantly.

Maybe that's why there was a thread here recently asking why Lara was in India on TV trying to eat a food at the same time that the WC was being hosted by England.
Everybody who was anybody was part of the WC broadcast.

All jokes aside Gayle is great to watch when he is in form.
For me what is more important is the state of West Indies cricket, its in the sewer. Look at how empty the Oval and other cricket stadiums in the Caribbean turn out when West Indies play BUT you see the difference when CPL cricket come around! the stadiums are packed!
