How can Warner retain his place in the team and Usman is dropped?
Do they suffer from frenism also?

The Ashes 5th Test
And he has the highest average for an Opening batsman in test cricket, whereas Warner has earned himself the title Broads Bunny.
In reply to runout
Lack of alternatives, plus they obviously think Warner will come out of this bad spell.
The problem is that mentally, against Broad, he's gone.
Almost identical to Gilchrist during his last Ashes Tour to England, pace bowling, around the wicket, good/fullish length and bide your time.
For whatever reason, Joe Burns wasn't selected. Kurtis Patterson should have been selected as well.
As for Khawaja, I think patience has worn thin.
In reply to WICFan
Irrespective of Khawajas performance in this series, he deserves to be selected ahead of Warner. He is Australias version of the binary man.
Day 1: 2nd Session

Rory Burns 42(77)
Root 31(65

Hazlewood to Rory Burns, out Caught by Mitchell Marsh!! Hazlewood provides the breakthrough! Must say it's a soft dismissal in the end. The short ball and it climbed awkwardly at Burns who got into an awkward position to play at it. Tried to shovel it away but the bounce got big on him and eventually ended up popping a dolly to mid-wicket. Marsh accepts it and Australia have broken through. After having done the hard work, Burns will feel disappointed at not cashing in. Credit to Hazlewood though, kept varying the lengths smartly and certainly surprised the southpaw with this lifter.
Rory Burns c Mitchell Marsh b Hazlewood 47(87) [4s-7]
Day 1: 2nd Session
ENG 105/2 (32.0) CRR: 3.28
Stokes 1(5)
Root 36(75)
In reply to runout
I would have preferred to see Khawaja opening the batting instead of Warner.
In reply to mikesiva
Perhaps Paine wanted to give Warner a shot, so he opted at batting second also just to hide him from a fresh pitch and the new ball?
In reply to runout
They could have played Warner & Khawaja as openers.
In reply to WICFan
Tough to drop Harris when Warner is failing.
That said, Root has again failed to convert the 50, even after 2 lives.
"
Paul Duggan : "Only England could turn Mitch Marsh into Wasim Akram!""
Guess they never heard of the West Indies.
This is the weakest England batting team in History. 3 specialist bats (Deny, Burns & Root) and 8 bits and pieces players. Only Root might make a 80's or 90's team as a batsman. One bowler in Broad and all the rest jokers. Australia gave them a game to make the tour look competitive.
In reply to dclar301
You don't rate Stokes, Bairstow and Butler? And Jofra?
In reply to runout
Bairstow is a keeper not a top 5 batsman, Butler also. Other than the West Indies name a team Butler can make as a specialist bat. Jofra had one good spell in test cricket. Next test he went for almost 100. Stokes is nothing special, not as good as Holder. Remember the 4 sixes.
In reply to dclar301
Remember Stokes won the test match for the Pommies singlehandedly. His bowling is very potent.
Butler is a dynamic player. Bairstow is a good batsman. I don't think they are bits and pieces.
Plus Jofra has been putting pressure on the Aussies. Not just Broadie.
In reply to runout
I think Foakes is a better keeper than Bairstow.
I'd have Sibley in as opener & either Malan or Pope in the batting lineup as well.
In reply to runout
Might be harsh, but he's the most likely to get dropped if any other opener makes runs in Shield Cricket.
Day 1: 3rd Session
ENG 269/8 (80.0) CRR: 3.36
So they will take the new ball, perhaps with a little more intent.
In reply to WICFan
Sibley is averaging 38 In First Class...Ollie Pope would have had his hands full with this Aussie attack. Bairstow on the other hand is averaging mid-40's in First Class and 36 in tests.
Interesting thread.
The theme here is that Hingland is not a good team... and most likely the reason we triumphed over them on their last tour of the WI, and not the superb coaching job done by the since discarded Pybus as some alluded (ok, actually claimed).
In reply to runout
At least Sibley is averaging over 50 this county season. Two other batsmen at the top of the run scoring stats are Balance and Northeast. I think all three should be in the squad for the next Test series.
The Test batting averages for the current top six look like our side!
Denly 24
Burns 29
Root 48
Stokes 35
Bairstow 35
Buttler 33
With those poor stats, these three deserve to at least be given a chance.
Sibley
Balance
Northeast
In reply to runout
Before today Bairstow's had 7 ducks in his last 35 innings with 4 x 50s and 2 X 100s.
Pope was in the squad for the 3rd test so management see something in him.
Denly was promoted to open to protect Jason Roy, the same Jason Roy who got dropped for this test.
Sibley hit a double tonne in CC this season, avg over 50 for the season.
Debuting at home might have been better than debuting on a Kiwi green top or against Rabada & co in South Africa.
In reply to WICFan
Pope is a very promising player, but I disagree with making him play this series as you already have seasoned players with Ashes experience wo ahs struggled. The cog in the wheel for the Pommies has been Roy who was a flub the entire series, and then forcing Denly to open the batting. Cummins and Hazelwood has been really good.
In reply to runout
If all fit I'd go with this XI:-
Burns
Sibley
Ballance
Root
Stokes
Pope
Foakes
Ali
Archer
Broad
Anderson
In reply to WICFan
I am sure with the Ashes at stake, the English selectors would have scrutinized their options in picking their best side.
Denly didn't do much wrong. He was pushed into a tough spot. Food for thought....if the Pommies thought as much of Sibley then why not let him open instead of Denley.
I also believe that the spinner Leach has bowled well.
Warner walking wicket walks. At least this time it is not Broadie.
It is a Goadie! .
In reply to runout
Ignorance would be the answer re. Sibley.
It's took the selectors too long to realise that you can't shoehorn the Test side with LO specialists.
This guy Labuschagne is a real find for the Aussies. He has a simple, uncomplicated technique, and appears to be mirroring Steve Smith's game.
Will Smith ton up today?
10th consecutive 'ashes' fifty for Smith, amazing. That is some serious pedigree right there.
In reply to runout
another 50 for smith... brought up with a 6
In reply to dclar301
WTF!!dawg Jofra most lethal quick around
In reply to Bigzinc
Talk about taking a liking for the Brits??? He is taking this liking to a different level.
SS is a borse.
In reply to WICFan
I like that side. Maybe Rashid for Moeen.
Northeast for 12th man.
The following should stick to limited overs cricket.
Roy
Bairstow
Buttler
Woakes the journeyman
Smith gets his 10th consecutive Ashes 50. He really likes Pommie bowling!
In reply to runout
Why you ask such obvious questions?
In reply to runout
Can't convert his starts though. 40,50's and 60's don't cut it at test level.
How many more runs Steve Smith needs to set the Ashes record for runs in a series? Has to be well under a hundred by now
In reply to Tryangle
160/5
ARcher has 4 and smithy has 66*
has there been a occasion where one single man has single handedly won a test series for his team with very little contribution from his teamates ?this smith is special indeed andto think he was considered a bowler who could bat early in his career and batted very low this has to be the weakest aussie batting line up i have ever seen in a while
In reply to mental_case
Early days yet for him. Labuschagne has demonstrated good temperament and has applied himself well to game situ..
In reply to runout
Smith have been stymieing the Pommies all summer. You think they would have figured out a way by now to get the man out under 20.
In reply to carl0002
Smith is riding a purple patch...and there is no answer for his prolific run from the Pommies. Seems like since they hit him on the head, they woke up the inner self, and the man is on song everytime he takes center stage.
Blame Jofra!
Smith may re-write the coaching manual for batting.
No exaggerated movement, no complicated batting stance. No extravagant defensive shots. The one thing he does well in amplifying is leaving the balls outside his offstump. Man See ball, man hit ball.
Smith out for 80
Aussie tail wagging...
England squandering precious lead
Archer 5-fer.
Took out Lyon.
6-fer
In reply to trev114
Congrats Joffra!!!
In reply to velo
Imagine if he'd played in the 3rd test, he could have been in with a chance of getting 1,000 runs for the series.
Day 3: 2nd Session
ENG 116/2 (42.1) CRR: 2.75
England lead by 185 runs
Slippery fingers Smith holds onto a beauty
In reply to runout
Usie should have been in the first XI. I cann't understand his omission.
Interesting day ahead but I hope Eng dont skittle the Aussies all out today.
Would be nice to be there on the last day to watch Jofra take the last wicket.
In reply to jcveletta
Case in point. Warner comes, broad bowls, Warner walks back to the pavilion.
Must be frenism.
So MOM Archer has the map of Barbados tattooed to his face.
How comes some peeps claim that he abandoned his heritage?
