Politicians do not want to name the stadium Usain Bolt Stadium, why?

What's wrong with the original name, Greenfield?

I read no greenery and a white elephant in the making!

In any case, I understand that they want to tag a politician's name to it!

O-Oh... rolleyes

The only politician whose name could be put there would be PJ since it is he who made the decision to place it there.

But do you think that Anju would be so magnanimous???

You joking, right?

Greenfield is not a name of a place. It was erroneously referred to as"Greenfield" by the Jamaican media when it was being constructed, but the term was simply referring to the fact that the stadium was being built on a greenfield site.

Well, the media did good by naming it after my maternal 'heritage', white elephant (now) not withstanding.

Why wouldn't I (and my other relatives that post here) want the continued honor?

Greenfield is really a cricket stadium. I believe it was hurried up and completed for the 2007 cricket world cup. Recall Portia and some of them eastern Caribbean politicans reading their long winded speeches and boring the hell out of the visiting cricketers. Ideally, National stadium should be changed to Usain Bolt stadium. The only other track and field stadium that comes to mind is the one at Catherine Hall in Mo Bay. If Sangster can get the biggest international airport in Ja, Bolt is well deserving of our biggest athletic stadium.

Agree.Said that long time. Bolt is from Trelawy too.
I believe there is ample room to have a separate track/football area so the complex could be
Bolt sports complex with the Lightning bolt statue at the entrance.

When I see the Immaculate Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port Of Spain (for One Gold medal mainly),
I am vexed that the fastest man ever has nothing substantial and appropriate for his deeds.
BUT as you know Jamaican politicians do not want to 'big up' anyone in a big way except themselves.
Maybe one day,his generation will give him Hero Status. I would.

I believe Anju and his party are more inclined to bestowing the honour of National Hero on Seaga rather than naming a stadium in the bush after him. I guess the opposition would have to have a say in this.

Family's honor is more like it.

Seriously, the naming of that stadium certainly made me proud of being part of the Greenfield clan.

That was a tongue in cheek comment,DonD.But you are right..
Blinds is being considered by Anju and Co. for National Hero. Imagine that..putting him alongside NW Manley et al.
I hope I am pushing up daisies before that happens.
He had nothing to do with The Highway really as PJ and Portia were at he forefront with that. And Usain was considered
for only a portion of it which I said at the time that he should reject that.Yet Blinds got that honour.
There is something in the water in that there Land

I was on the World Cup Committee and voted for the Trelawny Stadium. I was voting for a legacy project not the shortsightedness of elite club men. The old boys were upset from day one. History will be on the side of those of us who supported this venture.

It doesn't need to be named after anyone. Statues of famous Yardies can be placed on the outside of all venues present and to come - cricket, track and field, football and whatever else.
It is actually PJs legacy project

That is profound truth,Chrissy.

The amount of flax I got here Philly from Jamaicans connected to Kingston Cricket Club was unimaginable and took me back to the days when they resisted
Norman Manley in construction of the National Stadium. I lost a few associates because of this.

These folks have the mindset that Jamaica stops at Six Miles and Bull Bay. During my days at Daily News,I was also appointed to the Sports Advisory committee created by Michael's government,I pushed for a stadium and a cricket venue to replace Jarret Park in MoBay at the same time I lambasted Foggy Mullings who had responsibility for Sports at the time. Allan Rae was also on that Committee and he was supportive also.
Allan got some bad name but I found him to be a wondferful man with integrity and very honest.
It grieves me that there are some who are against anything that is Non Kingston in construct.

When late Cricket Board member Fennel agitated for Shell Shield to be played at Jarrett Park there wee some cricketers who resisted that idea too but they came around when they saw the support from the Western end of the Island.
It is ap[propriate that such a facility ,located in Bolt's Parish should be named for him and improved /updated include a Track facility .It would do well for Sports Tourism which the current loudmouths are talking about.
As they say the more things change the more they remain the same.
I done.

But remember we supported it pre Bolt wink
We may not be alive but one day there will be two big international football teams drawing tourists from around the globe - same with cricket and track and field.
