Congrats to the yard....but...tek the world, TT will handle the universe...lol
Ms France was cheated. Having said that if we still into judging women, how about a miss world stripper title????? Lets judge them on something more useful than just plastic smiling!!!
In reply to johndom90
Apparently Miss World is older, carries more prestige (if you can call it that), has more contestants and isn't/wasn't a Donald Trump grope fest.
lol
In reply to JahJah
Long before Trump and in M.U heyday T&T has been always high up in the running, even creating history,..and you know it ..lol..
Congrats to the dougla btw..
In reply to Barry
edible?
In reply to JahJah
Ms World indeed set the tone , more prestige and so, but im still not a fan of these contests, especially in times gone by,
not colourful enough for me, but that has improved over the years.
In reply to camos
pretty Dugla! as you Trini say.
Why use a Trini expression to describe this young lady. The Cultural Jamaican expression is "C....e Royal" If she was half Chinese she would be described as Chine Royal. Down the years, many Jamaican C....e Royals have won beauty pageants.
In reply to DonD
That would is not allowed in either Guyana or T&T - it is offensive.
In reply to Chrissy
Seems to me Jamaica got all de nice gyul, dem alwaus winning dis ting,is wah we doing wrong in TT.Congratulations to de yard.
In reply to JahJah

Of course what you say is not true-but do we need competition-We are just celebrating with you-man, you sick

Congrats to Jamaica. Seems well deserved.
As for as Miss World, T&T won this in 1986
As for Ms Universe, T&T won this in 1977 and 1998
The 1977 win was first for any black woman
In reply to Chrissy
Both dougla and "yuck" are offensive-She is a person of mixed ethnicity. Of course, Trinidadians have altered the meaning of dougla and it is now a most revered term ..
In reply to Chrissy
Not much into such things..but congrats to her.Hope she represents well.
In reply to Larr Pullo
No, Miss India if anyone.
Come in, problemguy!
In reply to hubert
Like you , I don't pay much attention to these things. I remember the first time Jamaica won the miss world, I was in England at the time. It was 1963 a few months after we defeated England under Worrell. I believe the winner was a girl name Crawford. West Indians and Jamaicans in particular were overjoyed that one of us was Miss World. Her mother deflated us though by announcing that she wasn't mixed. I heard that she was blatantly lying. Recall that Learie Constantine was one of the judges.
In reply to DonD
Carol Joan Crawford Mierens is alive and well and living here in Ottawa. Her story brought happiness to many Jamaicans who had only the year before celebrated Independence from Britain. Her brother Vin Crawford is a urologist and off-spin bowler who played on my cricket team here. I believe he had played for Wolmers...

People have different views about beauty but I have to say that Jamaica had this in the bag,i think judges are now taking a closer look at black women,I always feel a nice looking black woman is more captivating. Here's how people are so different in their views,a met a girl from Martinique recently, she is Afro,I told her I was from Trinidad, and her reaction was you had to see,she said she lived in Trinidad for 6 months and she has never seen so many pretty girls in her life, she said they are the best looking people in the world. Now she has lived in Portugal,France England and Martinique.
How the blood cleet a Guyneez win Miss World for Jewmayca!? Mih nah like this!
In reply to Barry
I read quite a bit on Wikipedia about "Dougla"in the Caribbean,in the article the writer explained that Dougla was the wrong word and the proper word is Dugala, which means hybrid. It would be difficult to find what Indian language it comes from, there are so many in India.
In reply to BeatDball
I tort it was dyam Trini, both ah we wrang.
In reply to BeatDball
You don't understand. Jamaica is a BIG country. With plenty 7 diffran diffran people. Our motto is: Out of Many, One People.
We have Chinese winning The Voice, Lebanese and Irish Prime Ministers, Indian winning Miss World, Afro-Jamaicans like Bolt, Rowe, Wint, McKinley, McLeod, Fraser-Pryce, Merlene Ottey, Dre Russell, Universe Boss, The Icon, The Soldier, and hundreds of others winning everything else.
In the Yaad, we large and in charge!

the sweetest Jamaican girl did not win, the Levey girl!
In reply to camos
Mr. Camos that is TYPICAL Jamaican BUMPER. In as much as I do not subscribe to beauty pageants as a matter of principle, When Jamdown win an international thing, principles kinda tek back seat for the time being. I just watched the youtube video for the first time and I felt proud of mi daughta. Nuff nuff respect to her when she proudly proclaimed that she speaks my beloved Jamaican creole as another official language.
In reply to DonD
Yes indeed - I had family in town two weeks ago and I was di translator

Miss-le -toe?
In reply to camos Fadda gawd, I saw it! Whomever gets that - illimitable respect!
In reply to Chrissy
Sorry Mis-take!
In reply to Chrissy
So is Jamaican creole a different language as is Trinidadian creole, Guyanese creole, Belizean Kriol or Bajan creole? I realize it was determined a separate language but are the other creole talk "languages"?
In reply to DukeStreet
I think many are languages - much like the plethora of languages in South Africa or India. Common to all are aspects of African languages but different countries were also influenced by the dominant European language. People from islands where French creole is still prominent all understand one another. Why is one creole and the colonial power's own a language. It's all BS to me.
What I find hilarious is that many of the people who oppose speaking Jamaican are not fluent in English.
I have long held the view that the sooner we deal with them as two separate languages, the sooner the entire population will be bilingual and comfortable speaking both.
In reply to camos
Astute observation right desso!
In reply to Chrissy

Yes... it is delectably substantial.

In reply to camos
for some reason, i never saw the big deal about Cathy Levy. I know she did the commercials and things, and i saw them growing up, but i dont know..thre was no wow. The one i really liked was Allison Jean Barnett. I think she made a mess of the interview, which is why she didnt win it all at Miss World. the other one that was really pretty was Michelle Harris. Lindy Delapenia's daughter was either second or third to Michelle Harris that year in the Miss Jamaica contest, and she was also very pretty.
on other matters..until i saw Chrissy's post, i had no clue that the word c..ie was offensive in Guyana or Trinidad. wow. I was going to ask if that was what dougla meant in those countries. would have probably pissed off a whole bunch of people inadvertently
In reply to Ewart
Remember when Mutty used to call Barbara the substantial Mrs Gloudon - of course he was 'throwing words'
In reply to rudebway
Michelle Harris was robbed. The winner verbally and visually admitted same.
Ava Joy Gill, another with Indian ancestry, was also thought of as being denied the Miss World title.
Love the Jamaican Indian girls...well all Indian girls. So beautiful.
Lisa Hanna is still the sweetest Miss Jamaica ever.
In reply to nitro
Lisa Hanna does not have one ounce of Indian
In reply to Chrissy
Oh, well she looks like one.
Still the sweetest.
In reply to rudebway
Got to agree with you on Allison Barnett. Was one fine looking young lady.
Patsy Yuen a Jamaican of Chinese ancestry finished 2nd or 3rd in Miss World 1973.
In reply to CWWeekes
Allison was also a genuine academic. Don't know if you know it but her father was a very popular Principal at Wolmers boys his funeral

In reply to nitro
Let me add...Robert (Bob) Maragh left arm spinner from Boys' Town who featured in a famous win
over Barbados 1958 when Jamaica won by 6 runs after setting Barbados 90 odd to win.
Played a lot of curry goat matches with him in his latter years Very nice guy we became good friends too except he always wanted me
and no one else to field at forward short leg for him.
Some claim he was the first of Indian descent to represent Jamaica at cricket. There was an Irvine Iffla,a decade before but I am not if he was Indian.
Don D may know.
In reply to hubert
Ignore dat list - many missing and many mistakes
Lisa's father was Lebanese and her mom a black-Chinese.
Nice mix.
In reply to Ewart
Did you all see Joy Reid talking about the reigning queens - she had fun with the Nigerian celebrating her Jamaican sister
In reply to Chrissy
Certainly there are more appropriate words but I don't think Dougla is that offensive.
In reply to black
Not Dougla - the C word
In reply to Barry
I read the article some time ago and may have got the spelling wrong.Thanks.
I don't think I have ever heard any form of Creole that is similar to Jamaican,Guyanese or any other forms in Trinidad.I have noticed though, quite a lot of Jamaican words and pronunciation in Trinis I know, maybe they learning from me,because I am good at it.
In reply to hubert
Don't know if Iffla was Indian. I read somewhere that he played for Jamaica after the war, during the late 1940s, believe 1948-50.I have a friend in Port St. Lucy, he knew Iffla, I will check with him.
BTW wasn't NW Manley's mother half Indian? Ewart should know for sure.
In reply to DonD
Never heard that... but she could well have been.
Iffla. I used to hear my father talk about Irvine Iffla but I don't think he was still around by the time I started watching cricket. Have a feeling he played for Railway or St. Catherine before making the Jamaica side.
//
In reply to DonD
Yes.You got the time frame right. This was an unusual name. Never encountered that name
anywhere except for him.
In reply to Ewart
I first heard the Manley story when I lived in Highgate in the mid 50s.That's when I learned that Manley's mother married twice to supposedly white landed gentries. The person I boarded with was a PNP stalwart.
In reply to black
Always check the etymology of a word- it can be used but the stain is real...
What is the point of beauty pageants if they don't actually pick the prettiest girl? She's a 5 at best.
In reply to Devin Nah sah...7.5!
In reply to Devin
..affirmative action cast a shadow that you don't belong when you are actually over qualify.
Her last name rattle the usual suspects
In reply to Dan_De_Lyan
I'm willing to bet that Devin thinks Miss India should've won.
...
He wouldn't be alone though. I too think she should have.
In reply to Drapsey
Where did Miss India finish? I used to watch this shite 15 years ago, but that was probably the last time.
In reply to Devin
is there a beauty show for men?
In reply to Drapsey
Devin has a right to opine on the one that he likes...
This is not a technical show.
Everything is an opinion. Looks, dress, walk, voice, smile, answer....etc
In reply to camos
Miss Nigeria gets an invitation to Jamaica from the Tourism folks
In reply to Chrissy
nice gesture!
In reply to camos
Indeed - she sure earned a free visit.
In reply to granite You were closer sah...her dad's a treeknee immigrant to JA!
Hahaha. The devil still hates to see West Indians winning...particular at the expense of the nation of billions. Sweet.
In reply to Drapsey
Don't fool yourself. The fact the chick has African blood is the gripe.
In reply to JahJah
That guy must've had it very tough growing up in BIM.
In reply to Drapsey
I think in the past he said he felt like Tarzan at the time.
