HEADLINE: Cottrell not worth $1m price tag - Gambhir

CaribbeanCricket.com Dec 25, 2019, 1:26:19 PM

KOLKATA – Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has criticised Kings XI Punjab’s million-dollar acquisition of West Indies speedster Sheldon Cottrell, labelling the move as a “desperation” buy.

Cottrell found himself at the centre of a bidding war between Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Kings XI before Kings XI finally secured his services for US$1.2 million.

Speaking following Thursday’s auction here, Gambhir said he did not believe Cottrell possessed “enough quality” to justify the lucrative price tag.

“There were no better options, Pat Cummins and Chris Morris both were sold out. They tried hard to get Morris but it didn’t work,” said Gambhir, who twice led Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL titles.

I don’t like the headline couldn’t you have phrased it differently?

Casper Dec 25, 2019, 2:26:06 PM

I am backing Cottrell to put soap in Gambhir's mouth.

There have been many $1M Plus picks who have turned out to be duds and little said about it after the fact. I expect Cottrel to do much better than Gambhir says, and I hope Gambhir will be man enough, when the time comes, to publicly apologize to Cottrell.

BERTRAND Dec 25, 2019, 3:06:31 PM

gautam gambhir was an untalented opening batsman that had just one thing going for him and that was grit / doggedness. he should be the last person to make pronouncements about the worth of any player - not after the way he lost the opening slot in the test team and then later had to step down as delhi daredevil's captain and was further overlooked for a simple place in the team by his peers who became decision makers in the ipl.

rillo Dec 25, 2019, 6:14:22 PM

That last game proved Gambhir very correct.

Match on the line. Captain brings you to win the match for him you the main strike bowler and what did you do?

Shyte down the place. We lost with an over to spare because you almost gave away the 17 runs they needed in 1 over.

Is that what a million dollar prize bowler is paid to do?

Khaga Dec 25, 2019, 6:41:57 PM

In reply to rillo

If he is not confident, he should feign injury and hide from international cricket to protect his million dollar tag.

That said, I am backing Cotterrel to disprove Gambhir come IPL!

Fantom Dec 25, 2019, 8:57:18 PM

When asked by a reporter for a comment, Soldier said: "Who is Gavin Gambler? Gavin Garbler is not a friend of mine. I have never heard of this Gruesome Garbler."

Norm Dec 25, 2019, 9:59:06 PM

Gambhir is a Cottrel expert, it seems!

I am backing Cotterrell to do well and learn a lot

actually, poster rillo is a gambir expert and bedfellow.

i fully agree with you and i will do the same.

Fortunately, neither Gambhir nor rillo decides Cotterel's worth in the IPL.

Maispwi Dec 26, 2019, 6:39:25 AM

Honestly, how many of allyu expected Cottrell to top de million $ mark?

We are happy for him and sincerely hope he can live up to his price tag but few people, if any, expected this bonanza. Gambhir was just outspoken and hopefully premature enuff to say so

Norm Dec 26, 2019, 7:05:51 AM

In reply to Maispwi

how many of allyu expected Cottrell to top de million $ mark?

I did, and I am sure many others did too. It is called "believing in your own (fellow West Indians)".

Cotterel has always been outstanding and should have never been dropped or left out from any WI team.

Here is something else. Those West Indians who establish themselves in the IPL are very unlikely to play Test cricket again.

Maispwi Dec 26, 2019, 8:32:24 AM

In reply to Norm

You do remember dat Cotrell got injured, lost pace and rhythm and had to work his way back? Are you suggesting dat he shud have been played while he was still regaining some kind of form?

Norm Dec 26, 2019, 8:47:33 AM

In reply to Maispwi

Water under the bridge. He will make a million+ now, and he has a stable spot in the WI limited overs teams.

Gambhir backed Narine's pelting millions to the hilt..

B16JP587S Dec 26, 2019, 4:57:45 PM

I can't remember Gambhir saying anything about the 2 and 2.2 Mil Yuvraj Singh got in 2014 and 2015.

Yuvraj went on to do okay in '14 but his team didn't even make the playoffs, and in '15 he was forgettable. Certainly, Yuvraj wasn't worth that much. But not a peep from Gandoobhir.

Khaga Dec 26, 2019, 5:03:11 PM

In reply to B16JP587S

Yuvraj was a twice WC winner and player of the tournament..A popular name in India ,which of importance to Indian Premier League..Who the fcuk is any bloody West Indian seeking their bread IPL? If you so value him,pay him more in your CPL..

Khaga Dec 26, 2019, 5:06:36 PM

How much does CPL pay Cotterrel?

B16JP587S Dec 26, 2019, 5:08:28 PM

You have no authority to determine who should and shouldn't seek their bread in the IPL.

If you so value him,pay him more in your CPL..

Again, forces outside of your control determine how much a player gets paid. Eat your heart out...like Gandoobhir.

Khaga Dec 26, 2019, 5:11:37 PM

In reply to B16JP587S

Simple..You and your players should know their place in the IPL and defer to IPL experts..

B16JP587S Dec 26, 2019, 5:14:42 PM

lolol. You are so hurt that you could be forgiven for posting nonsense.

You carry some real luggage instead of those chops on your shoulders..You can make a few cents while celebrating Cottrel's millions..

B16JP587S Dec 26, 2019, 5:43:08 PM

In reply to Khaga

You remind me of the term "Stolen Valor".

The people who bought Cottrell didn't ask you for any money yet you act like you are paying him.

When India wins you mercilessly put down the other team and act like you defeated them.

I can understand being jubilant and happy when your country wins but grinding the other team down as if you personally were responsible for their defeat smacks of a character flaw.

You didn't provide any money, you weren't there when these guys had to wake up early to run that extra mile and lift those weights and practice the same things over and over and over again, yet you walk in like a king after the game is done and put down the opposing players, fans and team as if you personally had a hand in their defeat.

Khaga- the one who steals people's valor.

Khaga Dec 26, 2019, 6:00:13 PM

Yawnn..Majority of fans aren't there for anything..Just stop your boring rasshole rant..

Khaga Dec 26, 2019, 6:07:41 PM

You are name-calling Gambhir because he doesn't think your West Indian player isn't worthy of a million bucks..And you are lecturing me..Hypocrite!!

B16JP587S Dec 26, 2019, 6:18:03 PM

In reply to Khaga

it hurt you? I stole any valor from you and Gandoobhir?

I'm disappointed in the stance you're taking on Cottrell's ascendancy into the ranks of sports millionaires. I thought you would've looked at it as repayment to a West Indian by the IPL for stealing their 'brand'.

Those poor but ambitious 6 million or so West Indians do need to somehow share in the profits of the 1 billion Indians, reparations some might call it.

See, I'm giving you points to argue on, because your current methods reek of jealousy (grudge) on your part.

rillo Dec 27, 2019, 8:34:17 AM

Rabada to Archer the new batsman first ball 140 kmp YORKER.
That was what was needed by Cotterel in that pivotal over against India.
Instead wide and wider and match lost.
That is why he is not worth 1 mil.
He will be a big bust.
he does not know how to bowl as yet. When to bowl different balls and where to put them.

SnoopDog Dec 30, 2019, 3:25:52 PM

Cotterel (and any other player for that matter) is worth whatever the Minidan bookies are willing to pay for him.

The question is what VALUE (in terms of wickets and matches won) will they get back for that million dollar investment?

So the question shouldn't necessarily be whether he's worth what they paid him. The question should be whether he's overvalued or undervalued based on what they paid for him and what he brings to the table in terms of wickets and matches won.

I would say he's massively overvalued.
