HEADLINE: Sammy wants in

CaribbeanCricket.com Jan 13, 2020, 4:01:53 PM

Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy still has high hopes of playing International Twenty20 cricket for the regional team. He last played for the West Indies in the final of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Twenty20 World Cup against India in 2016 when the West Indies won the title under his leadership.

A couple months later he was dropped from the team and replaced by Carlos Brathwaite as captain. Since then, Sammy, the only skipper to win the Twenty20 World Cup twice, has not played for the West Indies.

And even though four years have passed since he last donned the West Indies maroon, Sammy said he is still hoping to play for the West Indies in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup which is being held in Australia later this year.

“I love playing for the West Indies, especially in the Twenty20 format. I have not retired from international cricket, therefore I still am available to play for the West Indies in Twenty20 matches. I am aware I will only be selected if I perform in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) or in any of the other leagues I play in around the world. I am eyeing the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia later this year. I am hoping to catch the eye of the selectors with good performances in the CPL and the Pakistan Super League. I think with my experience I still have something to offer as a player,” Sammy told Barbados TODAY.

Everybody and their brother getting in, so why not the great leader (or is that Dear Leader?).

A so me seh too. Why not? The only problem is that Sammy not a Trini and was not one of the players that Simmonds had promised a play and get upset when he could not deliver on the promise. So he wont be as lucky as the others. And for sure we don't want to return to an unbalanced team. So as the Jamaican folk song said, "Sammy dead fe true" big grin big grin big grin

Hard to see what value could Sammy add to the current WI T20I team. He cannot earn selection on any IPL team, I think. I don't even remember him playing in the last 2 editions of the CPL.

Playing Sammy, or Dwayne Bravo, will raise questions about qualifying requirements, and fairness to younger players who have been playing in the CPL and other regional tournaments.

Things are improving but we seem to be looking for ways to screw up whatever progress we have made recently.

He can't bat higher than 7, he doesn't bowl anymore, hasn't scored any runs for years, why would he even be considered?

I like him but he's in the final stages of his career, it was over in 2016 for him

Sammy should be involved as part of the 'think tank'...

Not a player.

Bravo is one of the best "death bowlers"in the IPL and when given the chance to bat is always capable of some quick runs, why not have him in the team ,it will be the last time.

Personally, I like Dwayne Bravo and wish he had stuck around in all formats for WI. There will be problems regarding his qualifying "just like that" for the WI T20I team though.

I agree that the youngsters could learn a lot about playing good quality T20 cricket from him, and about developing a winning strategy, etc.

You don't realize you are running stale with this?

Your obsession with Holder and brathwaite is unhealthy.

My comparing Sammy to Sammy has nothing to do with Holder or Carlos.

Get over it. Pouty is sammy2.0

There was a time when as many as 10 Donkey Sammy threads were in the Rum Shop on page 1. All the hypocrites here kept quiet then.

Some posters did their best to encourage the perpetrators in their nastiness.

Fuzzy do your ting...the left shoe is now on the right foot.

Sammy 2.0

Exactly, so we don't need both. 2.0 usually is an improvement on 1.0 if you not microsoft.
