A theory

FuzzyWuzzy 2020-02-29 14:22:08

Most of our modern/young batsmen grew up with Chris Gayle as their role model. They see the lifestyle etc that has resulted from his t20 exploits and would like to emulate

What they may have failed to recognize is that Gayle is/was a proper batsman who honed his craft in test cricket (2 triple tons etc).

Yes Gayle was notorious in eating up dot balls but had the ability to make it up most times....till age caught up with him. I recall bish pulling out his non existent hair complaining about dot balls...no it is not a new phenomenon invented by Hope.

So if our youth truly want to emulate Gayle they first have to learn to bat like Gayle did....in the longest format of the game.

And for this to happen CWI has to make it possible/attractive for the youngsters to want to do it.

Otherwise we will only sink further and continue to cuss individual players.

How did you arrive at that one?

Hope it is not just because of Gayle's longevity as evidenced by him covering a playing period of 20 years (2000 until present).

it's a theory so there are probably some assumptions in there....

Ok, I'll accept that (conditionally).

Still would like to hear Fuzzy's explanation, however.

This is a hypothesis, not a theory.

Gayle started as a ,no prisoner type of opener, in the middle he became more circumspect, towards the end he was a slower starter but then there were guys who could force the rate when he slows.Part of our current problem is how we blend the batsmen we have, was surprised to see Chase and Bravo batting at the same time before Pooran.

True but at that time we still had stalwarts like Lara and Shiv.

Maybe you missed Hetmyer and Lewis

Hetmyer admires Gayle but he does not bat like Gayle in that he takes quick singles and uses his feet to the spinners. He does not have a lot of dot balls at the start of his innings.
Brandon King admires Sarwan. Pooran admires Lara.

I doubt it is limited to Gayle idol worship. I would say it is more IPL/T20.

Not as bad as the dot ball conjecture.

And you admire Fredericks. So what?

I am placing no blame on Gayle. But to these guys Gayle and ipl go hand in hand. Gayle epitomizes the ipl and t20 global franchises.

I agree Gayle is a factor but if IPL wasn't accessible I think the approach would be different.
