Dave Martins and the Tradewinds essentially lived and developed in Barbados, during Burnham's rule. In those days there was not a single professional recording studio, or even a single record producing company in Guyana. There was also no TV (neither TV sets nor broadcasts) and the Guyana dollar was not legally convertible.

This affected not just Dave Martins but also Eddie Grant, whose career as a musician in about the same period as Dave Martins also developed in Barbados, where he still lives.

Even those who started in Guyana before Burnham promptly packed up and left, mostly for Canada and the USA, when it quickly became clear that despotism and backwardness were taking over. Johnny Braff, who was probably Guyana's most popular musician when Burnham gained power, died in New York about a year ago.

So, yes. Dave Martins's music career was based almost entirely in Barbados, as was Eddie Grant's.

Actually, he said in that documentary he lived in the Cayman Islands and had only visited Barbados briefly...but maybe he returned

Norm 2020-04-14 11:28:33

In reply to doosra

he lived in the Cayman Islands

Official residence, perhaps. He spent a great deal of time in Barbados during his playing days. Many Bajans consider Tradewinds to be a Bajan band - because they were in Barbados almost all the time. They were also in Toronto often.

well he started things off in TO for sure

it was good to get some of this out.

Not according to this article.

A musical sensation and pioneer to the music industry in Guyana, Johnny Braff, died yesterday morning around 04:00 hrs at the Palms Geriatric Home.

true Norm. i thought it was a bajan band.

but you may not be right about Eddie Grant. he lived in England for a long time before living in Bim. most of the music he is known for came out of the time he was living in the UK not Bim.

i am not even whether he still lives in Bim

Norm, Eddie Grant did most of his work in the U.K. where he migrated to as a young man.

Have you ever heard of the British Band 'The Equals'..? That's the band that Eddie led in the late 60's and early 70's.

You seem to be all over the place on this thread.. What's up man...!

Barbados residence came much later, where he mostly manage musicians and publish music.

To Sudden, he still lives in Barbados..

Not according to this article.

I take it that is the Palms in Georgetown, Guyana.

Thanks.

In reply to Elsie and sudden

Eddie Grant did most of his work in the U.K. where he migrated to as a young man.

Thanks. I really thought Eddie Grant developed his music in Barbados, because I have seen him listed somewhere as a coming from Barbados (which I knew wasn't true, but it led me to think that he adopted Barbados as his home, while developing his music career.)

Anyway, I learn something everyday. Eddie Grant, Dave Martins and Johnny Braff make me very proud of my Guyanese background, since I was a little kid, listening to "Remember on the Green Grass", "The Rooster", etc, and then several Eddie Grant songs in later years.

You seem to be all over the place on this thread..

Good thing I wasn't opening the bowling. I might have knocked down the square leg umpire! smile
