West Indies fast bowling legend Curtly Ambrose believes batting icon Brian Lara was in too much of a rush to claim the post of team captain, and went on to find the task tougher than he expected.

Yuh trying to create Jhanjaat eh lol.....who does not know this.Curtly even mentions it in his book. He virtually campaigned for it. Found out it wasn't as easy as he thought. That being said, its not like it would have changed anything. And some of the greatest innings in history of this sport have been authored because lara pursued the most toxic chalice in world sport

He craved to play. Viv blocked him until he was 22 and his father was dead. There is nothing wrong in laying claim to a throne as King Solomon did. Nothing in the West Indies except slavery and indentureship is inevitable... evil

Mmmmmmmm, so that's why he reveled in the scoring of those two most famous world records at the mini ARG, Viv's own backyard.

Uhh no....its because its the most lifeless pitch in the Caribbean and it would be almost impossible to do it on any other ground in the WI.

In reply to Barry
Indeed. Lara was kept out in favor of Carlisle Best.......talented but way too inconsistent to demand a regular place. Besides, rven Viv craved the captaincy. I remember him saying in an interview in the 80s that he wished he hsd gotten it earlier. And if the WI were losing as much as we started to lose post 95(not Walsh's fault either but the combination of lack of investment in WI cricket by the Wicb when were winning and the the disastrous appointment of Richardson, a yes man, as cappo over Desmond Haynes who wss being groomed for the role), viv would have gotten the role sooner.

PS....I love Sir Curtly, but why the need 5o create this comess now? Why doesen't he talk about how viv campaigned for richardson to be captain and who no one in the WI thought was captaincy material, over Desmond Haynes who was the mentor ov the team and clearly a better tactician

You are surprisingly accurate again- I remember that- Viv (rightly so) felt that he was being denied. And Lloyd precious soul, he cried to Burnham after Sobers appointment and Kanhai temporary positioning razz

And nobody can deny Richardson was an awful cappo. And showed no leadership qualities from the start. He used to try to sound confident and always ended up sounding arrogant and foolish. When the analysts talk about the impossible wins windies conjured up to keep our unbesten run going, the always mention three names: ambrose, lara, walsh and haynes. The one time ritchie is mentioned, its with derision- prepping Patterson to bowl instead of amby and walsh when it was voted they woulf bowl out versus SA in 1992.
And then saying the Aussie side that eventually beat us was the worst aussie side he had played against....bloody fool. And said this after thry had beaten us

Warne didn't even name him captsin of the best west indies team he has played against

Ambi had no ambition for captaincy and no desire to lead.
How is he expected to understand another man’s drive for glory?
Ambi literally said he didnt care if people banned him if he knocked out Waugh.
Ambi wanted to pack it in and Cuddy convinced him to stay on.

This is not a strike at Curtly; it’s just putting his ‘love’ for cricket and cricket history into perspective vs Lara’s, where Lara lived for this every moment of his young life.

Richie Richardson was a bad captain too I saw his handling of a spinner from TT in England,he appeared foolish and didn't understand what the bowler was asking for during a test,it was about field placing.Even the commentators knew RR was or didn't understand. The bowler I recall had Atherton plumb LBW but given not out,it was a test in Nottingham on a dead surface'

You remind me of the way Lara handled Rajendra Dhanraj. Walsh set a leg side field and told Rajendra bowl leg-waste of time. By contrast, Lara wanted to beat Guyana with Harper in. He told Dhanraj vary it. Eventually he bowled hoops around his legs and TT won. I am sorry Lara was not the captain we expected. I regret the slander and the hurt against him. I am sad because the West Indies remain shit and you haven’t stop fighting. lol lol lol

Why did Lloyd complain of Sobers' appointment to Burnham?

Was this Burnham a selector or Manager?

Ritchie was an awful cappo. Curtly said so in much more words in his book. Desmond haynes had to tell him on the field that the team agreed to bowl out Ambrose and Walsh when SA needed 90 sumtin to win with 9 wickets with 9 wickets remaining on that day in Bridgetown while he was prepping Patterson(a awsome bowler who was having a bad game) to bowl. Nobody in the region was comfortable with ritchie as cappo, and the hurt of a much more Match intelligent, respected playerin Haynes was real. Remember how many times he was hooed onto the field
