what an amazing book - still going strong across the planet - from 1958. I used to know it by heart.
Come in Bajans - tell me more about him.

I knew it by heart - seriously - just got a copy for a great niece. One of the best educational tools every written.
I don't know if he was born in Guyana or Bim but it hardly matters to me. I have a maternal grandpa from Bim and a paternal grandma from Bim.

As a boy in TT my father knew some Bests in San Fernando, they were of Bajan heritage,I forgot to say they were Afro Bajans.Wilfred Best as far as I know was living and teaching in Trinidad until he and his family left for England.

Agree - About a decade ago had a 1st year student - an enthusiastic young lady who was struggling. I told her she's have to sort out her English to do better and she asked me how.
I set her on a self-teaching programme starting with the Students' Companion and several websites.
She moved from C+ in most subjects to B+ in two years. She completed her Masters and also learned Spanish. Now she's married with two kids. She still talks about that book and how it changed her life. I remind her that she was the one who wanted more.

There are International Editions as well as the original Caribbean edition.
It's in several global libraries and is used in places like Australia, Hong Kong and Britain.

About 20 years ago I requested copies of two books from the Caribbean....one was Students' companion and the other was First Aid in English.
I wanted my two daughters to use them here in Toronto...which unfortunately they didn't...
I still have them on a shelf in my basement....time to pull them out and have a look at these two great foundation books.
My favorite book in primary school, along with Caribbean Readers. Didn't know that The Student's Companion was written by a West Indian.

Mate, I have already been trending this way. Civics was compulsory in the early forms and I have no doubt that it helped shape many lives.
Good move to attempt to bring it back in the primary and early form levels.

I have a copy tried with my kids also but they preferred, Rogetss Thesaurus instead.
I studied with the SC many a nights.
It is available on Amazon

Would be great if Civics makes a return.Should not have been discarded. I did a voluntary 2-week stint
in the 80s at my son's Elem school, and civics was taught but it is no longer a subject in most
public schools in Philly, And you wonder why the greater population of today so ignorant ,,right up Trump's alley.
LOL
thought that came from England!

When the prevailing ideology changed from society to market, they threw out several babies with the bathwater - literally and figuratively.
that probably came before my time and I am in my late 40's....The book that I remember is the Junior English Revised (a brown book with a yellow flower each petal had writing in it). I will have to see if this book all ya talking bout it still available so I can get one for my son)...
In reply to Chrissy
I acquired a copy again a few years ago.
It was slimmed down and with very few of the lists I remember from childhood.
Nevertheless I assigned it to my daughter to memorise.
I guess I had a different edition.
I remember my dad and grandfather speaking highly of a book called the Royal Reader.
In reply to Halliwell
You can read it on line for free
