Question
In reply to Rudeman
That was 1973.
In reply to Rudeman
where was the game?
In reply to camos
I think it was Lords
I am thinking Sobers was retired by '73 , Kanhai was the captain then.
Both Sobers and Kanhai "retired" after the same test match against England in Trinidad in 1974. However Sobers was named for the World Cup in 1975 but had to pull out and was replaced by Kanhai who made 50 odd in the Final against Australia at Lords.
The original side for the 1973 tour was:
Rohan Kanhai, captain
Lance Gibbs, vice-captain
Keith Boyce
Steve Camacho
Maurice Foster
Roy Fredericks
Vanburn Holder
Inshan Ali
Bernard Julien
Alvin Kallicharran
Clive Lloyd
David Murray, wicketkeeper
Deryck Murray, wicketkeeper
Lawrence Rowe
Grayson Shillingford
Elquemedo Willett

Sobers last tour. He played under kanhai
In reply to camos
What was ridiculous about that tour was
1.Sobers pulled out after knee surgery despite protesting that he was fit for the previous series at home against Australia.
2.Davis opted out of the tour because he had other "commitments" yet ended up in the dressing room for all 3 test matches
3.Camacho got hit by Andy Roberts which ended his tour and test career.
4.Lawrence Rowe became allergic to grass and missed the test series
5. Sobers made himself available for the test matches and in the final test went out drinking after he was not out overnight and did not sleep at all and at one point the next day had to run off the field to throw up holding up play for a couple of minutes in the process and calmly came back out to continue batting as if nothing had taken place.
6.Boyce had a magnificent first test and series.
7.Sobers took 2 magnificent catches off Gibbs at backward short leg.
8.Ron Headley was drafted into the team because of Camacho and Rowe being unable to play.
9. An unnamed player missed a test match because he complained of a pain in his chest the morning of the test match. This was stated in Lloyd's first book. Not sure who it was but I have my suspicions.
Despite all this we trashed England 2-0 in the 3 match series.

I remember him playing at the mecca and was batting on 90 something. The water cart came out...not like these days...the lil push cart bearing H2O. He sent back the 12th man to the pavilion. the 12th man came back with a brown liquid in a glass. Sobie down it and went back and hit the next 2 balls for sixes and move to 100.
What was in the brown liquid that glass
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Sweet water.

Lloyd has some stories about Sobie!!!! Those guys genuinely believe that he could do anything and if he had the same dogged determination to not get out that Shiv has he could have averaged in the 80's.Between 1958 and 1969 he averaged 72.

like Lloyds 1st tour to India? Lloydie was having trouble with Chandra and Sobie come down and said I have a bet on the horse race at 3 so let me handle him. Bam Bam match over
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Yep.Or the time on that tour when he and Wes were batting and he was coaching Wes.They came in for tea and of course Wes was boasting how he was at ease against Chandra and there was no problem.Sobie decided to stop coaching Wes and in no time, Chandra cleaned him up and Garry could not stop laughing.
Regardless of performance, let a player today go out the night before, have a hangover the next day, go out to play with that hangover, throw up etc and everybody knew why....he would be crucified.....not exalted and admired.

Gayle and Sarwan among others went the Mound in Sabina ,AFTER a game and you remember the reaction.
did gayle or sarwan make 150 not out in that match and what was the result of the match?
Sobers made himself available for the test matches and in the final test went out drinking after he was not out overnight and did not sleep at all and at one point the next day had to run off the field to throw up holding up play for a couple of minutes in the process and calmly came back out to continue batting as if nothing had taken place.
Gary was always Sober

Saw a YouTube Lara said on his 1st tour to oz he partied all week in a night club in sydney before making his maiden 277.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Lara named his daughter Sydney after the place where he made his maiden test ton. Lloydie said they were relieved he did not make his maiden ton in Lahore.
In reply to Dukes
My understanding is that it was Holding that said that about Laras child. Not Lloyd.
In reply to imusic
Clearly it offended you. It was intended as a joke and not meant to be a statement about Lara's child.Maybe that is how it was presented to you.
back to the '73 tour, Keith Boyce is who I can remember as a youth!
In reply to culpepperboy
Reminds me of the first time I got drunk. It was Boxing Day 1972 and we had a tradition where on Boxing Day you visited everybody to eat and drink.I got quite drunk and one of my friends said Banna you drunk to which I responded,Bannas I am Sober more than Sobers.
In reply to Dukes
1 - I addressed who made the statement.
2 - I found the joke offensive at the time and still do.
Trump also said his grabbing women by the pussy statement was a joke. Locker room talk
Interesting to see your perspective though
In reply to Dukes
Don't touch a tit in imusic presence. he will take out his steel beam and smack yuh
He hasn't forgiven the icann yet
In reply to camos
Boyce would have well been in his 30s by then
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
He was 29.
In reply to Dukes
Fair enough. Would have been 30 in October 73
In reply to imusic
Hope this helps
In reply to camos
Boyce was my first love in test cricket because this was the tour that hooked me. Have special memories of watching the highlights with my father and the extended crew

In reply to Oilah
I recently saw some clips and Boyce's running between the wickets was phenomenal, routinely turning ones into twos.
In reply to Dukes
His throws from the boundary right over the stumps were a sight to behold. People had high hopes for him being the poor man Sobers.
Sobers once indicated that the liquor destroyed Boycie
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Phenomenal!!!
I seem to recall a competition he won in Essex for being able to throw the cricket ball the furthest.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
THIS! Hard and flat.
In reply to imusic
Did that clip help you understand anything new?
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
This is one of the memories of Boyce that has staying power the other is the ferocity with which he hit the ball...like he wanted tuh kill it

In reply to Dukes
Ive seen that clip before. Nothing new to understand
In reply to imusic
WOW!!!!!!!
I am assuming that you do not think Lara's comment was offensive.

After watching the Last Dance, with Denis Rodman Antics and MJ wanted to win, he closed his eyes to Rodman bad behaviour.
Great players can get away with things, other players can't.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
You should have seen Gordon Boyce or Winston Skinner throws.you were too young.
