Jofra Archer has been "dropped for indiscipline"

JOFRA UPDATE:
There's no party or a nightout angle here. He stopped at his home in Brighton on the way from Southampton to Manchester and that's where the breach happened.

He will now be kept in isolation for five days and will have to pass two covid-19 tests before he gets to join back.

Narper 2020-07-16 09:27:02

Weather update:

Still drizzling. Please, PLEASE enough of this. Just when thought the first two days at Southampton had the quota covered ..

Holding asks.....why the English players didn't travel by bus together from Southampton to Manchester?
An answer was....traditionally The touring team travels by bus....and each player of the home find their way
Holding retorts that this is not traditional times....this is Covid times

Bang on! This level of ECB incompetence is typical of the incompetence with which the British government has approached coronavirus from the outset of the crisis....

Narper 2020-07-16 09:42:43

It has stopped raining we're told, but it will take this outfield some drying before we get started. So for practical purposes, the reason we're not having any cricket at the moment is not the rain, it's this wet outfield.

From Zaheer Clarke

In the last 5 years, the average 1st team inning score at Old Trafford is 362 runs.

All teams who failed to reach this par score lost the Test match. All teams that achieved the par score went on to win or draw the Test match.

Wasp 2020-07-16 10:51:11

The boys just need to occupy the Wicket...play as a team....develop partnership and work on batting once on this pitch....

England will panic

Holder wins the toss, elects to field first.

Unchanged team.

Narper 2020-07-16 11:01:35

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Same team

Jason Holder:
We're going to field first. Try to make use of the overhead conditions. Whatever it is under the surface, we'll try to extract it in the first session. Same team. The bowlers have pulled up quite well, expect similar things in this game.

Joe Root:
[quote] We have to look ahead to the next five days and put up a good performance. We spoke to Mark and Jimmy and knew it's a high risk to play them in back to back games. It is a must win for us, but we need to look after them as well. We can take 20 wickets and we're looking forward to that. We have Broad, Woakes, Curran and Bess in the bowling. Firstly we need runs and need to improve there. We need to figure out how we want to play our cricket. We got ourselves where we could win the game after being down in the first two and a half days and that gave me a lot of pleasure. It was a difficult one at the toss. It looks a very good wicket, might spin a little bit and is softer than usual. I have had a lot of time thinking about Test cricket and want to get out there and perform.

Narper 2020-07-16 11:10:44

This is the ninth instance of Jason Holder opting to field first in 19 Tests he had won the coin toss. (Won 3; Lost 5). Since Holder started captaining WI in 2015, only Kane Williamson had opted to field more often - 13 times in 17 Tests.

England have rung in the changes for this crucial second Test. Jofra Archer is out after breaching biosecurity protocols, while James Anderson and Mark Wood are being rested. Stuart Braod is back after his omission from the first Test, which left him feeling, in his own words, "frustrated and angry". It'll be a while before we see him though. West Indies will bowl first after winning the toss.

This like the Tayrol debacle?

First test I expressed my opinion very early that it was a mistake for England to bat first. I think they never recovered from that.

Now I think it is a mistake for WI to bowl first. However I am glad that they did because I want England to win.

13.2
Roston Chase to Rory Burns, out Lbw!! England review: What do we know. It's overcast, it's a toss where they've opted to bowl for their four seamers, and it's the spinner's non-spinning delivery that does the bit inside the first hour. Well, well. It's a crazy world. A very simple-looking delivery, on a length, going straight on and with Burns complicating things by playing for the turn and ending up completely down the wrong line.

Rory Burns lbw b Roston Chase 15(35) [4s-1]

Narper 2020-07-16 12:35:38

robbo 2020-07-16 12:39:16

Much needed wicket there....the pace bowlers are going to have to up their game dramatically in the afternoon session.... it all looked very meek & gentle remembering in particular that they put England in.

Post-lunch | All set for another session in the sun? At least it's visible now, and the skies are clear. I suppose you could say it's a pre-Tea afternoon for the pre-Tea session.

13.3
Roston Chase to Zak Crawley, out Caught by Holder! What a start for Chase! He's on a hat-trick now, and he's just turned one in to take the inside edge onto pad, that lobs up nicely to Holder at leg-slip! What a start for the West Indies after lunch, and the lanky giant has to depart for a duck!

Zak Crawley c Holder b Roston Chase 0(1)

Narper 2020-07-16 13:18:55

14.4
Roach to Root, no run, DRS: Roach will be praying for his first wicket in about sixty overs in Tests. Seams back in off a scrambled seam, strikes him outside the line of off-stump. NO bat involved. Impact outside the line as he attempts to defend and the ball goes through bat and pad of the forward defence; no need to go any further. Poor review, and the verdict is not out.

Ark28 2020-07-16 13:19:06

Agree but we bowled too many loose balls before lunch need to make them play outside off.

clokey 2020-07-16 14:05:46

Easy to be an expert after the fact, but after 26 overs there has not been one chance created from pace.

Apart from two gifts to Chase, there's been nothing too threatening.

I think if he had his time again, Holder would have batted, given his quicks another day of rest and looked to bowl last on this wicket.

England make 250+ today and I don't think WI can win.

Disappointed so far, but things can turn quickly.

Alzarri Joseph to Root, out Caught by Holder!! Edged and gone! It was a forced bowling change and Joseph gets the big fish. A loose stroke from the England captain. It was a full-and-wide ball outside off which swung away a tad, could have easily been ignored. But, Root in an attempt to go after the pacer, chases it with a flashy drive and persihes. Played well away from his body and got a healthy outside edge. Simple catch for the Windies skipper at second slip

Root c Holder b Alzarri Joseph 23(49) [4s-2]

52.1
Roach to Sibley, FOUR, it is his strength and weakness - flicking through the leg-side. This was straight on middle and leg, Sibley clips it in front of square and the timing is such that it beats the chasing midwicket fielder comfortably

Dominic Sibley *68 (214

mikesiva 2020-07-16 16:12:16

In reply to Narper

Sibley...a batsman with questionable technique, gets a half-century.

That's the difference between Sibley and Shai.

Sibley has technical flaws, but the mental strength to grind out runs.

Shai has a good technique, but a questionable mental temperament.

Norm 2020-07-16 16:15:46

Roach losing his edge. Using him as a workhorse is just ineffective now.

Good thing Gabriel is back on the field, because Holder seems very unwilling to give the ball to Alzari, who is now a much better bowler than Roach.

Unless Gabriel or Alzari take a few wickets and shake up Eng, they might declare with 400+ on the board.

DRopped by Holder in 2nd slip

65.3
Gabriel to Sibley, no run, edged and dropped, a sitter and Holder at second slip has somehow missed it - came at a very good height and he would be disappointed. This was full and wide of off, Sibley jammed hard at the ball, the bat hit the ground and at the same time, the ball cvaught the outside edge - went straight to second slip where Holder let it hit his wrists and shelled it

Over the stumps...not out

76.1
Roach to Sibley, no run, huge shout from Roach, who doesn't get the decision but nods at Holder to take the review. This one has struck Sibley right in line with the stumps as he plays across the line. The only question though is height. And

mikesiva 2020-07-16 18:17:33

In reply to Drapsey

Roach is looking worryingly innocuous this series.

Without that extra yard of pace, the batsmen don't seem to be afraid of him.

Yes, he's been economical, but that's an argument to play in the ODI side, not the Test team.

Trinidave 2020-07-16 18:22:01

TriniD missed de drop ketch. How much was Sibley on at de time?

solidrock 2020-07-16 18:25:36

Both Gabriel and Roach should should have been looked at as to whether they are strong enough to play two tests so close. I would have left out Roach for Jimbo and highly considered playing a rearing new fast bowler for Gabriel.

Roach remains 0-fer. Maybe he is the one that should've been displaced by The Wall.

That would have been hard to predict (that Roach would not be taking wickets). I would have dropped one of the poorly performing top order batsmen to bring in Cornwall (or Warrican).

WI looking more certainly now at a 400+ Eng first innings.

Roston Chase to Sibley, out Caught by Roach!! If ever there were a punishment for making a blocker forcefully slog, England would be served the death equivalent. Poor Sibley, after missing half a dozen untrained, uncharacteristic reverse-sweeps, he decides to dance down. After all, there's Stokes smashing them all around to add to peer pressure. Anyway, Sibley charges, is nowhere close to the pitch of it but doesn't not-hoick. And ends up miscuing off the inside-half to a sliding deep mid-wicket.

Over to ball-tracker and it's three reds. Excellent review from England. Campbell's feet were cemented and he didn't account for the inward movement. It looked out to the naked eye, Curran was confident and rightly persuaded his skipper to go for the review. The last two deliveries were outswingers and he followed it with an in-nipper. Superb work!

clokey 2020-07-19 11:06:43

You can tell that Shai Hope is in form when he's playing the ball off his legs and punishing straight bowling.

I'd love to see him use his feet just a *touch* more. Sounds a silly thing to say, but I'd almost like to see him with a bigger 'trigger movement', just so he could force himself to get his feet moving

clokey 2020-07-19 11:35:27

I'm obviously going to jinx him, but some very good signs in last 10 minutes.

Feet are moving, more proactive and looking to score.

He has his start - there's runs for him out there.

England claim Kraigg is out caught down leg...umpire Gough says not out.

England review. No edge on Ultra Edge. England lose their review.

Another close one for Kraigg on 39*

Not out...umpire's call, but England didn't review anyway.

There is a five-run penalty for putting saliva on the ball but it doesn't kick in straight away. Apparently, it'll be added at the end of the innings. Did Dom Sibley breach this regulation?

West Indies 118-2 at lunch

Kraigg 41*(109)

Kraigg doesn't have the much-lauded technique that Shai seems to have, but he seems to have something that Shai lacks.

Shai, if you're batting on off stump, then you don't need to go nibbling at balls outside off...not thinking?

Who knows when the Windies next test series after this will be, but interesting times await at selection as, God willing, some depth seems to be building.

Won't be the worst thing in the world for Hope and anyone else struggling to get a live kill or two in first class cricket and force your way back into the side.

Brooks looks an excellent depth addition, Hetmyer and Bravo are very close to best 11 players and I'm absolutely desperate to see Pooran take red ball cricket seriously and add to this line up.

Stokes to Kraigg Brathwaite, out Caught&Bowled!! Stokes's relentless toil from round the wicket has come good. Bangs it in yet again, Brathwaite jumps back in the crease looking to work this across the line but it holds up on him, resulting in a simple caught and bowled off the leading edge. Woakes to Roston Chase, out Lbw!! England review this LBW: There's a four-year-long record umpire Micheal Gough is guarding here, where not a single fielding team's reviewed decision given by him has been overturned. NOT ONE. Well, well, this one's the breaker. This looked dead plumb. A sharp inseamer, coming back in from wide outside off a fair distance. Windies will've a challenging day tomorrow... Their paramount objective is to not lose the match... England will obviously go for runs early, and if not bowled out, will declared and set Windies a total... Holder must instill in his players to not lose their wickets and play for a drawn... And be ready to win the third test.

10.32am: Uggh, not the news anyone wanted to hear*. The Evening Standard's Will Macpherson tweets from the ground: "There's a little bit of drizzle in the air so they're bringing the hover cover out." How will that change things? It's just the hover for the time being, so if it passes quickly we should be able to get out there before long...

*apart from millions of West Indies fans around the world

10.41am: Cover off! "Just about OK," reckons George Dobell. "If no change, think we'll start on time."

Woakes to Kraigg Brathwaite, out Lbw!! Kraigg Brathwaite has been given OUT LBW, he has a chat with his partner and he's walking. That looked close and Shai Hope sends his partner on his way - just the start England wanted, they have got rid of both openers in the hour before lunch. The nip-backer from Woakes and once again Brathwaite was caught on the shuffle - the ball burst past the inside edge and struck him on the back-pad. The impact was in front of off, was it going over? It struck Brathwaite on the knee-roll, but he's a short man. The umpire didn't think so and neither did the batsman himself. Replays show that it was umpire's call on hitting the stumps, good enough to clip the bails.

Kraigg Brathwaite lbw b Woakes 12(23) [4s-1]

8.5
Broad to Shai Hope, out Bowled!! West Indies are in tatters now - that stood a fraction low and Hope had no chance of digging it out - the nip-backer and it's causing all the trouble, jagged back in sharply, beat Hope for the movement as he hopped across and went on to crash into the top of off-stump. Hope made it look even worse by crouching across, the top-order has been dismantled and England are slowly taking complete control over the game.

Shai Hope b Broad 7(26) [4s-1]

Dreama 2020-07-20 12:45:36

Where is the benefit of doubt for the batsman when West Indies are batting? Yet Ian Chappell believes the DRS system needs an overhaul. His most concern is the look on the umpire's face when three of his decisions were overturned. He argues that a bad decision would never end a player's career, I beg to differ. Without looking at name of the writer I knew based on the mentality he was a white man.

I remember a match in the West Indies Daren Powell and Jerome Taylor had Australia 5 for 18 in the second innings, Andrew symonnds was under pressure for his place in the side, he was out I think caught behind but was not given. He went on to make a big score, saved Australia and himself with the extra life.

I do believe the DRS system needs an overhaul because it is impossible that a decision can be in and out at the same time, any portion of the ball hitting the stumps is out would level the playing field more for the darker teams, provided it is done by the neutral arbitrator not looking to manipulate the angle in favor of one team or the other. People don't know they are bios and one can mistake their intentions until they open their mouths and impartiality departs. A black man must die to receive his proper accolades.

Broad to Roston Chase, out Lbw!! Third wicket for Stuart Broad! The in-nipper does the trick. Seamed in at 131kph from a length and Chase was probably expecting the ball to leave him. He didn't offer any shot and the ball hit the flap of the back pad. The impact was outside off, but it doesn't matter as the batter had shouldered arms. Chase walks off without reviewing! Could he have reviewed that? Well, ball-tracking shows it to be hitting off! Good call from the West Indies batsman not to send it upstairs.

All the commentators wishing someone, anyone would step up or put Hamilton in the wall so he cannot break Michael Schumacher's record, because they don't want a black man to have those accolades in what is clearly a racist sport. Sam Curran to Shamarh Brooks, out Lbw! They're not going up for the review! Curran gets the big breakthrough, and delays the real celebration until after the allotted 15 seconds. That's seamed back in, skidding through faster than what would be true bounce, and hurries him up before he can bring the bat down. Did look like it hit him awfully close to off-stump, but the impact MAY have been outside. He really should have taken the review here, as a last resort at the very least. We're waiting for ball-tracking, just so we know whether or not the West Indies will regret it - Umpire's call on impact it is - and crashing into the top of middle and off. Brooks has to go and England smell blood now.

Shamarh Brooks lbw b Sam Curran 62(136) [4s-4 6s-2]

I don't know if Eng would win this match, but WI has nothing to be ashamed of here. They were competitive, and some their batsmen have started to step up when needed.

The ball that got Brooks bounced half as much as the previous ball. Still, it was short and Brooks should have watched it more closely.

Nevertheless, a fine innings from Brooks!

Don’t agree Norm... I felt the Windies have looked half asleep in this game... their bowling has been insipid & their batting exposed as very brittle & technically flawed...I will say though that England are a very difficult team to be in England.

Norm 2020-07-20 16:32:23

Curran attacking the stumps. Good bowling tactics by him, even tho he's bowling around only 80 mph.

Stokes with ball again.

Holder bowled by Bess. Eight down.

Narper 2020-07-20 16:43:46

BOWLED !!!!!!!!!!!

Dom Bess to Holder, out Bowled!! There's the nail. And there's Bess's plan -- bowl rubbish, more rubbish, show you're scared with a flat delivery, and then rip in the beauty. He throws up flight on this, dipping in sharply on Holder's perhaps a little lazy forward defence and then explodes off the good length area to burst through the bat and pad gap. Yeah, these offies

Holder b Dom Bess 35(62) [4s-5 6s-1]

Officially, the Pommies need 2 wickets to win.

I say they need 1 wicket to win.

Sorry, Gabriel.

Critical third Test coming up.

Bring in Cornwall for Hope? Da Silva for Dowrich? (Not as a permanent replacement, but just to see how Da Silva shapes up at the highest level).

Dom Bess to Alzarri Joseph, no run, now West Indies will review. And when they do, you know, YOU KNOW. Joseph once again gets beaten by the sharp in-spin, playing outside the line and this time he's given out caught at short leg. Nope, no glove, no three reds

64.1
Dom Bess to Alzarri Joseph, no run, England chance an LBW review: They are no West Indies, who just refuse to disturb the third umpire. They'll review a forward defence down the wrong line, but HawkEye tells us it's bouncing a little too much over the stumps

Norm 2020-07-20 16:52:26

Review. Did it take bat? Seems so.

No!

Stokes to Alzarri Joseph, out Caught by Dom Bess!! This was coming. Joseph clearly wasn't planning on holding back, and as is evident now, doesn't plan on keeping his drive down either. He slices a wide full one, and it's right down point's throat

Dom Bess to Roach, out Caught by Ollie Pope!! Forget the one hour, it's the one ball that'll do. Pope's already writing a short-leg fielding manual, and he's added another page with this catch

Jason Holder (West Indies) |
losing captain: We're disappointed with the result. We have let ourselves down. England played a good game of cricket so they deserve all the credit. We could have stretched the game yesterday, but that's when we let ourselves down and lost wickets in clusters. England bowlers challenged our batters a lot, stuck to their tasks, and held their lengths. The batters got caught in the crease; we need to get forward or back and make sure we are decisive about playing or leaving and also with our footwork. We have a few days left to ponder these things. It's a short-term problem, honestly. We need to understand scenarios better. English bowlers tend to bowl long spells, so we need more grit and trust our defences for longer. No regrets about the toss, Stokes and Sibley deserve the credit for their innings. I remember we passed the bat a few times and put down chances, and we need to make sure that doesn't happen in the final Test. We are experienced enough. After a long layoff, we are getting used to the workload, and we just have to see how the bowlers pull up before the last game. We are here to fight, I know the guys are feeling this loss, and we'll give it everything in this last game

Narper 2020-07-20 17:51:26

Joe Root | Winning skipper:
It was a brilliant week of cricket. From the outset making 400 for the third time in four games was great. From that point on in this game, we just drove the game on. At the start of the day all three results were possible and it was great to finish on top. [On Sibley's batting] I mean that's exactly what we want from him - to go out there and make that big contribution and then Stokes just keeps getting better and better. He went through a range of gears and played the situation. He doesn't surprise me, if you watch how he goes about his business in training and practice, he leads the way. He just wants to get better and better and it is great for a lot of young guys coming in to see that. [On Broad's comments after the last game] You expect that from Stuart. When he says something you expect him to back it up. He put up a great performance in the first innings and today as well. We always feel that he has a long career ahead. [Selection for the next game] That was always going to be the case with the ball. It's the first time we have so many options available. It is a good headache and a fantastic position to be in as a team.

Narper 2020-07-20 17:52:03

Ben Stokes | MoM:
[On his injury while bowling] I am fine. Just probably sad to get stiff and when I said to Broady, he asked me to stop. Didn't want to take that risk. [On the team overusing him?] Absolutely not. I do everything the team asks of me and we have found the method of playing dry cricket with the field. Not only does it give us a wicket, it also keeps the run rate in check because the batsmen can't get away. In the first innings it just came about. We didn't feel there was any lateral movement off the pitch or anything. Bouncing six balls into the wicket is a plan we use in Tests. [His batting contrasts across innings] Both complete difefrent roles, last night and this morning was simple in terms of what we needed to do to get ahead of the game. A lot of credit has to go to the spell the bowlers bowled yesterday - Broad, Woakes, Curran and Bess. There are discussions, but Joe has the final call on when I bowl. He made a positive effort to get Jos and me up the order. Looking at the scoreboard and seeing 300 balls faced was quite strange (laughs). Never thought I'd ever see that.

If Bill Parcel or Belichick was his coach, he'd not see another game until he show responsibility...
