HEADLINE: Jason Holder offers 'full support' to under-fire West Indies batsman Shai Hope

Jason Holder, West Indies' captain, has thrown his "full support" behind Shai Hope as the tourists contemplate whether to make changes for the deciding Test of the series against England. Hope has scored 57 runs in four innings with Phil Simmons, the team's head coach, admitting that he was concerned by the batsman's lack of form after defeat in the second Test.

However, West Indies' only batting option is the uncapped Nkrumah Bonner and Holder gave his team-mate staunch support when asked about Hope's poor returns, saying he has "full confidence in Shai to get some runs" ahead of the third Test, starting at Emirates Old Trafford on Friday.

"All our players have got my full backing, they know how I personally feel," Holder said. "Some of them haven't been getting the runs they would like but more or less it's just giving the lads full support, 100% Shai. We all know what Shai can produce at this level. He's arguably one of the best one-day batsmen in the world."

Put it this way. If I'm Mr Bonner and I find myself in a touring squad with just 7 specialist bats making me only the one reserve batsman when the team is selected to play then I'm very close to glory.
But if two fail 4 innings in a row and still i'm on the bench then I must ask myself, why am I here?

Yes, Jason but you are playing test cricket now, not one-dayers.

Andre Russell is one of the best limited overs players but I wouldn't want him anywhere near the West Indies test team.

Holder said that West Indies had yet to make a decision on their XI, preferring to wait until seeing the pitch in the morning, but confirmed that they would only be selecting from the players in the official 15-man squad, rather than looking at options such as Joshua Da Silva or Oshane Thomas from the reserve party. That may mean another chance for opener John Campbell to impress, after scores of 28, 8*, 12 and 4.

Hope should play as well as Campbell. It's the final test i don't think they should throw in a newbie now

Reasonable question

Except. We know why he’s there. Because he did well in the regional FC competition and that’s a criteria for selection. Have you ever seen Bonner bat?

Bonner has a fairly good style, he has been making runs at the local level for the last few years, just like Brooks, we would not know how good he is until he plays at the highest level.

Fair enough. I haven’t seen him bat except in CPL. Think he played a T20 or 2 for West zombies. Wasn’t impressive there to me. FC is a different kettle of fish tho

Saw him in the regional just done. He shaped up alright to me. In fact he looked more composed than Mr Blackwood in my eyes.

When I see fans writing about a player, that has been around for years, I have to do some research.
Bonner 31 years 69 First Class Matches 27.22 3 tons
This guy is lucky to be on any international team.
Brooks 31 years 86 First Class Matches 32.17 7 tons.

Whenever a player with Hope's ability loses form, it is never easy to drop him because you never know when he might deliver a big one. I would suggest relegating him in the order.

Yes he is lucky to be there, if the Virus situation was not in play he would not have made it. However his numbers are off because when he first started playing first class cricket, he was more of a bowling allrounder, he was a legspinner. Only for the last few years he has become a full time batsman.

Apart from the regional tournament and local cricket in Jamaica, is he playing for any oversea leagues?

I am shocked!!! Jason did what?

Scar 2020-07-24 03:39:23

I am not that worried about Hope, a much better batsman than his stats show. I am more concerned about them having Campbell at the top who is not as technically sound as Hope, shows more holes in his batting and cant seem to play a dig in innings to correct his form
