made one of the biggest political mistakes in the country's political history - agreeing to contest the September 3 General Election!
The odds stacked against you, polls tell that you have no clear path to victory, the country in a pandemic crisis, and yet you agree to participate in an election that could be called next year!
Political madness! There is absolutely no way the PNP can win the September 3 General Election!
Watched the political debate and noted Bro Gad stealing from the PNP's playbook - calling Phillips papa tax, a name reserved for Bro Gad's godfather!
Phillips was so low energy he made Biden looked like a livewire!

Jamaica's General Election - Peter Phillips
In reply to XDFIX
Nice try dude. Consensus in Ja is that Andrew flopped and Phillips won that debate. Even Andrew in his post debate interview admitted he flopped and NOBODY in Ja calling him Papa Tax. It flopped. People on social media including young people stating their shock at the difference between the Phillips branded by the JLP and the Phillips showed up. The independent panelists gave the debate to Phillips. Don't tell me- u got your info from Nationwide= Jamaica's Fox News.

what were his options?
Jamaicans would be fools not to see through Holness.

Apparently not contesting. I keep wondering because it keeps coming up if part of the JLP's strategy was betting on the PNP boycotting. Here people been asking why opposition welcomed election or why contest it because of criticisms to govt calling it in a spike

so if he boycott it like in 83, then they end up with zero seats. how is that better? at least now they might get 20 or so.
Thats why we need fixed election dates, I dont even think that would save the PNP either, the fact is despite a good performance in the debate Peter Phillips has been branded as old and sleepy and out of touch by most Jamaicans and by his own party for over three years, so one debate isnt going to save him. Also Holness' popularity will not take a hit because of this covid spike, a falling Jamaican dollar or a bad debate. The fact is the best the PNP can wish for after Thursday is to retain a few seats and get rid of Peter Phillips.
Both Bill Johnson and Don Anderson went into the field to do polls just before the debates, both gentleman polled the JLP at 37% while Bill polled the PNP at 23% and Don polled the PNP at 25%.
Don also did a series of constituency polls that showed the JLP leading in every single one of those polls.
Bill Johnson also found that the JLP decimated the PNP when it came to voters under 35 and was even with voters over 55.
The PNP shot itself in the foot when it rejected Bunting as it's leader and one debate performance won't change years of narrative re Peter Phillips.
If the PNP is serious it will have to let Phillips go and have either Lisa or Bunting take the reigns ASAP as a snap elections will be called by Covid in about 3 years.

Well, if you're running your politics on the half a loaf principle, I would agree with you! The fact of the matter is even with the zero seats; the PNP would still be the major opposition - they have a nonparticipation template to follow!
Remember, if you don't stand up for something, then you'll fall for anything!
Now, not participating would give them breathing space to strategize and come back stronger, even under a new leader! As it is now, I would be surprised if the PNP wins 20 seats!

The JLP found the "remedy" in Andrew Holness. They went with him over the older Shaw. PNP needs to catch up.
In reply to rudebway
I don't think age is what separates the leaders Peter needs to demonstrate more drive and passion.
In reply to camos
He was great in the debates. It is hard to show drive and energy when a large part of your organization is fighting you down. Bunting should have waited his turn.
From today's news reports I see the PNP has "shaved" the JLP lead.
Hmmmmm......
Wonder what that will mean on Thursday night....

Well according to Michael Burke elections are won on election day. So that is organization. What was interesting with the security forces poll was the 23% turnout for soldiers despite the $90,000 payout(long overdue apparently) just in time for election. What that means is left to be seen.

Not happening. Election gonna be close.
"Loosening the fiscal rules"...Peter and Damion's words not mine. Chrissy, please explain to me what they mean by that? Thanks in advance.

If it approximate close, I would have to join the chorus - Jamaica is PNP country!
Just so you know, the Covid-19 monetary help that Nigel doled out goes a far way in winning friends and influencing people!
A plot Trump is missing!
Phillips calls for national prayer, urges safety on election day!
President of the People's National Party (PNP), Dr Peter Phillips today called for the nation to be in prayer as the country prepares for tomorrow's general election in the face of COVID-19.
In a statement this afternoon, Phillips said amid the pandemic and with the errors of policymakers that have unleashed tremendous trials on Jamaican lives and livelihood, the nation has the opportunity to reflect on the fact that we are indeed nothing without our creator, who has sustained and protected us.
He encouraged church leaders and their congregations to keep the nation in prayer for an incident-free and safe passage through the polls.
"We have been assured by the electoral office about the safety of the process, but we must never forget the power of prayer as taught to us by our mothers and fathers," he said.
