The Guyana Police Force (GPF) today notified the general public that investigations in relation to allegations of criminal conduct by Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield and others during the post-March 2, 2020 elections incidents are continuing.

As a consequence, on September 26, 2020, at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, Police investigators arrested Lowenfield and put several allegations to him in the presence of his Attorney.

The GECOM head should be held responsible for Lowenfield's (and Mingo's) conduct in the recent elections. If GECOM lacks the administrative means to keep its staff from committing crimes while on the job then that should be corrected.

As things stand, however, there are probably no existing laws that could make any action of a GECOM employee on the job criminal.

This action against Lowenfield (and Mingo) seems to indicate a willingness on the part of some PPP government officials to abuse their power, and the willingness of the party overall to allow it. That cannot be good for Guyanese.

... but what is the consequence of the action that was very costly to all players, country, and citizens?

None, if it is not a crime under existing laws. Laws are not normally retroactive either.

If private citizens could take public officials to court for actions stemming from the performance of their (the public officials') duties, then no government would be able to function.

The PNC should now file a series private charges against current government employees. It should be really easy to bribe a few government officials and then file private charges against them, with plenty of proof to flaunt in the news media.

This witch hunt by "private citizens" against GECOM PNC officials makes no sense whatsoever, and could also prove to be dangerous and disruptive.
