Jamaican middle-order batsman Andre McCarthy is one of many new faces that will be touring with the West Indies for their three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and two Tests matches in Bangladesh next month.

McCarthy has been named in the ODI squad, which will kick off the tour in Dhaka on January 20.

The Melbourne Cricket Club player has made only one T20 appearance for the West Indies – against Pakistan in 2018. However, the right-hander is keen to grab his chance with the limited-over side come next month.

“I have been putting in the work for years and it has taken a while but I am still happy about it. It’s a journey and I am glad that I have been given the opportunity, so it’s for me to go out there and play my part,” McCarthy told The Gleaner.

I AM A FAN of McCarthy and I really want to see him doing well.

I feel happy for all the guys who have been given an opportunity, but if I was a Selector I would have given Justin Greaves a chance in front of McCarty as he has more potential to give more, even Coach Simmonds lobbied for him in the Barbados team.

Justin Greaves is a better batsman than most, if not all selected for that tour.

Yes I agree, but I wonder what do the Selectors see, what goes on in the selection room, are they forward thinking, do the Selectors operate under the influence of some substance while selecting the team, Greaves is 26 years old, has a better first-class batting average, better bowler and is excluded for a player that is 33 years old, has very little upside and in 2 years might not make the Jamaican team.

I wish McCarthy well. It is not these guys' fault that they, and not others, have caught the eyes of the selectors this time around and we should all be happy for them. No matter the state of the team, it must be an electrifying moment to get that call to say that you are selected to play for the West Indies. Do your best, Andre and all the others. We are supporting you.

So it’s really a toss up between both players, Greaves averaging better in First Class and McCarthy averaging much better in List A.
