BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Chief selector Roger Harper said the shock decision to recall Jason Mohammed after nearly three years on the sidelines to lead the West Indies one-day side on the upcoming tour of Bangladesh was premised entirely on his experience at regional and international level.

The 34-year-old Mohammed last represented West Indies 2-½ years ago but got the nod over all-rounder Rovman Powell, who led the Caribbean side to Bangladesh in 2018 when then skipper Jason Holder was out injured.

Harper said Mohammed, who has featured in 28 ODI, 83 first-class matches and 96 List A games and also captained Trinidad and Tobago was the ideal person to oversee the young team, especially in the absence of many of the senior players.

“We thought with a team of this nature where there are a number of young players and a lot of regulars — so to speak — absent, we needed someone with a little more experience, someone who would be able to guide and nurture young players on a tour like this and we thought Jason Mohammed was the best fit,” Harper told reporters.

I don't understand this talk of experience.....this mind set of officials in power is one of the main reason for pathetic condition ,in which,West Indies is .....a player, who was dropped from the team ....returns as captain only on the basis of experience without any performance to speak of.....all around the world, youth is being propelled to forefront with positive result....in West Indies , it's reverse...failed players are brought in....if experience as captain is the criteria set by the chief selector...then each of the islands can surely put forward at least one name more capable than Mohammad...in terms of experience as captain.... Harper as a coach was good,as a player bad and as a chief selector...Ugly..

If experience counts then Carlos should be ist choice for both limited formats... the math never adds up for CWI, but the keep trying. Can't fool all the people all the time- Brother Bob famously sang.

Because K. Powell should have been captain.

I no longer think it is "fooling the people" anymore. I now see that clueless administrators will hire clueless selectors, then the trikkle down effect takes over. They really are just not capable of fixing our woe!!!
