BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Sir Andy Roberts has described all-rounder Jason Holder as a “damn good cricketer” but says he is “lost” as a captain, and should look to the coaching staff for help during matches.

Pointing to his field placements, the outspoken legendary former West Indies pacer slammed Holder as being too “defensive-minded”, contending he needed to employ a more aggressive approach, especially when conditions were suited to fast bowling. 

“I would like to know how do we judge a captain,” Sir Andy queried.

“Do we judge him by his win-loss record or do we judge him by his performance on the field or do we judge him on how well he interviews?

“I think Jason Holder as a captain on the field is lost. I don't think he is aware of what is going on, on the field, because if I win a toss as a captain and before lunch on a green-top pitch I am having a man on the point boundary, then I am lost.

The question is who do we replace Holder with, and is that person likely to be better?

Precedent has been set.

We recently had 5 plus years of a captain, in all formats of the game, who could not hold down a place in the starting XI.

Why should it be any different now?

And there ya go. Or is this where it's advisable to just having a captain in-name-only and all directions come in from the pavilion?

I am not in favor of the WI Selectors strategy of giving the captaincy to allrounders, like they have done for the last 10 years, it is time to give it back to a specialist batsman or bowler to ease some pressure off the player. Roberts is right in his critique of Holder, I find it amazing that Holder have not change his ways after being criticize for years about being too defensive.

So basically we had a captain who couldn't make the side as an exceptional player but proved he could lead by winning and setting proper fields vs one who can make the side as Allrounder but can't set fields and is lost at sea.

But you still have to find 11 to send out on the field. Just shows we also need to add developing captains on our agenda. Who were the U19 captains the past 10yrs. None came through?
