Mr Brian Charles Lara take a bow.

Lamb 2021-01-15 16:59:12

I am so proud of you and I have your back.

You possess the class, both on and off the field that is envied by many.

The latest of your humility and unselfishness is when you called up Andre Fletcher and had a word with him....since then, he made an unbeaten 80+.

It is amazing what a word of encouragement and some tips from a genuine and talented individual can do.

Take a bow Mr Lara.

Your continued unconditional love for West Indies cricket is unbelievable.

Dem ah go tired to see yuh face but dem cayan get you outta d race. Many are called but few are chosen. You are among the chosen few, Mr Lara.

ERRR....BECAUSE LARA WAS CARRYING THE SIDE LIKE IF HE WAS STILL CAPTAIN, exemplified by his 600+ runs in SL in a side captained by hooper that lost 3-0

hooper was a punk. His last match before he came back as captain was in barbados during the odis with the aussies in 1999. the bajan crown, then his biggest defenders after guyanese, booed him and told him he was getting fat. And he got angry and retired. Only punks behave like that

Not an historian, but I think ur wrong... The prince relinquished the captaincy, when the team was losing and was given to Hooper whom resuscitated the team - the prince then cried to the board for the captancy. Hence, after the India tour the board phoned Hooper and told him they were giving the captaincy back to the Prince, which thereafter Hooper retire... That's my recollection...

dude could not take pressure, which was the hallmark of all west indian cricketers prior to him, and the hallmark of at least two batsmen who debuted after him.

Yep, you are no historian, so quit with the historical revisionism!

Pooper's average in his last few Test series was very poor;

13.0 against the Kiwis at home followed by 24.8 away to India.

In the World Cup in South Africa that followed, he could only manage 99 runs at an average of 19.8 from 6 matches.
Indeed he hadn't scored a single 50 in 21 ODI innings.

Pooper had clearly lost it and the Great Brian Lara was chosen to replace him as captain against the Aussies in the Test series that followed.

Pooper left WI team once again in a huff and a puff!

Fake news.

1. Bajans were/are SIR Carl's greatest fans.

2. Circa 1998 it had to be the Guyanese in the crowd that booed him.

3. Bajans boo Collymore for bowling short at SIR Carl and that game was at Kensington Oval.

To the dunce known as Cherri.........i leave you a direct quote from Curtly Ambrose's Time To Talk book

He could do no wrong for Bajans-sone even branded him Sir Carl. But when he played the sixth one day against Australia in Barbados 99, he had put on some weight and was rather sluggish in the outfield. He was fielding at short midwicket and normally in that position, the old Carl Hooper would have swooped on the ball, but this time he did not make much of an effort for some that came his way and was signalling to the man at midwicket that it was his ball. It happened quite a few times during the game and the Barbados public lost it and started to heckle him real badly about his weight and said that he was lazy. He could not take it from the crowd he thought adored him. At the end of the game, to iur shock and amazement, Carl announced to us in the dressing room that he was going to RETIRE from cricket. Just like that. I understand later he denied that he quit because of the heckling but i feel he was acting on his emotions straight after the game, which I thought was immature.

That is a direct excerpt from Sir Curtly's autobiography. It can be found on page 218 if you are interested. A word of advice. Never test me with facts.

If calling it quits after yuh get some talk is not the behavior of a punk, then i do not know what is. Which is why Hooper could not test Lara, despite being more talented. Because lara had enormous guts and courage. Maybe he was a prima dona....all geniuses are Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Viv Richards.......it comes with the enormous talent

Great. Excellent. It does not change what Curtly Ambrose said in his book( which i purchased). Which i quoted from. I even mentioned the page the passage could be found on

Walco 2021-01-16 00:03:12

In reply to Jumpstart
Ambrose made observations and drew conclusions about motive based on those observations. But Ambrose apparently has never spoken to Hooper about Hooper's motive for doing what he did after that game. I suspect Cherri has had that conversation with Hoops

Jumpstart 2021-01-16 00:07:19

In reply to Walco

I did not question his motives for retirement. I did say that the Bajans heckled him for putting on weight which apparently hindered his movement somewhat. The entire quote i have in my third post, including the parts in bold, is a direct, word for word quotation from Ambrose's autobiography. It was Ambrose's opinion that his decision was immature. Not mine. I just quoted from the book to prove that i knew what i was talking about

What i do contest is any suggestion that lara is remotely resposible for averaging 36.

You realize only Viv wanted Hoooer as captain right? Neither holdong nor Garry Sobers thought it was the right decision. Sober' opinion is found in this cricinfo article

The Legendary Sir Garfield Sobers has endorsed Michael Holding's view that Carl Hooper doesn't deserve to be elevated to the highest position in West Indies cricket.

We are rebuilding and I can't see Hooper being a part of the rebuilding of West Indies' cricket, Sir Garry, the most celebrated West Indian cricketer, told NATIONSPORT yesterday.

This is a thread about Lara. Here are some excerpts from a chat group discussion I read recently. This is a group from my old high school in Barbados.

Keith: Henry I here watching some highlights from the 2003 World Cup on Sky Sports...they just showed Sachin making a hundred off Sri Lanka and then Brian Lara making one off South Africa...I know the only body that could tell me Brian Lara ain't de sweetest batsman dat ever play cricket is God

Keith: My take is you could bat as good as Lara but not better

Henry Inniss: Totally agree.

Keith: I used to tell people put up three big screens side by side with Sachin at his best, Ponting at his best and BCL at his best and see which one yuh gine be forced to watch(that was my response to people telling me dat Sachin or Ponting could bat better than Lara)

Henry: I watched Kane Williamson complete a double against Pakistan last night and quite frankly I would have preferred to watch BCL make a quick 50. The man is a genius.

Keith: Thank you sir...when you endorse that statement,I don't need to hear nothing more!

Walco 2021-01-16 00:36:22

Henry: The best spinner I’ve ever seen is Murali. A few years ago an interviewer asked him if Sachin was the best batsman he had bowled against and he said no that it was BCL. He explained that BCL was the only batsman who could pick his mystery ball 100%. That was it for me!!!

Keith: My man I said this exact thing...Murali is the best spinner of all time and he did say Brian was easily the best.
Remember Lara nearly kill Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka
Keith: 688 in three tests

Winston: I can't believe three big men talking bout batsmen and leaving out the sweetest of them all...chaaa

Glyne: Dont come on here with this Hooper c**t so early in the day
Winston: But I aint call no names yet

Walco 2021-01-16 00:47:22

Jarad: I will have to go with IVA Richards for sheer dominance but lara was a genius like Sir Gary but left handers have an additional flare

Gregory: Interesting interview with Sangakarra where he says he would give up all his test runs or hundreds just to bat as good as Lara

Henry: Winston, Hooper was talented but I’m not allowing any batsman whose average is not over 45 in a discussion about top batsmen.

Winston: Henry you following Gregory...I haven't named my candidate yet

Gregory: Henry I dont think he even reach 40
Gregory: 36.46 to be exact. Winston know he cant open he mout and say Sir Carl in this conversation

Winston: We cud do with a batsman with that average now. He would be our top man...look what we come to

Gregory: From the time we started picking batsman without first class hundreds. And that started with Marlon Samuels

Henry: True. The guys making our test team with a few regional 50’s so they’ll get exposed against top bowling very easily.

Don't bother with these peeps bro, dem trying to revise history!

Hoops runs out on WI (26 April 1999)

In an initial press statement on the matter, WICB Chief Executive Officer said that, "the WICB would have to apply to the International Cricket Council Technical Committee for the World Cup '99 to draft a new player into the squad.''

The release also indicated that Hooper had informed Camacho of his retirement with immediate effect on Saturday night and that confirmation in writing was to be delivered yesterday.

But for the public, news was scant until the WICB statement that was read out over the public address system at lunchtime yesterday. That announcement was met by cheers from many sections of the ground.

On Saturday, not for the first time this season "Hoops'' was run out for eight in his last innings for WI. To make matters worse, he made a number of uncharacteristic fumbles in the field. Ironic cheers and jeers hounded him all day.

Hahahahah...... razz lol

Both Lara and Sarwan were WI batting consultants for the 2019 india series. It is obvious that not even their experties could help the second string trash that now is the first team. Let me ask you a question, Holding has never served in any official capacity in WI cricket, he does not care about WI cricket i guess

Jimmy Adams is not doing a good job at all. I expected much more as far comparing as Michael Holding with Brian Lara as imput to the cause, well Holding was a worldwide renowned commentator which took him to all parts and contractual as well. Lara never held such positions he was always freelancing and more easier to commit himself to windies cricket.

Jumpstart 2021-01-17 21:01:00

Dude you serious? What being a commentator have to do with helping the WI? Hoss de man never even run a two day camp for fast bowlers. Also, Lara has a very successful real estate and events business that he had even while he was playing. I find it extraordinary that the people who hounded him out, want him to come back and coach. You mean lara must come back and help the same persons who called him a prima dona, selfish, Tony cozier went as far as to tell an indian newspaper that Lara was bad for WI cricket. Pat Rousseau even lied to the Observer and told him that lara had snubbed Mandela. He only retracted it when Walsh came out in defence and said that Lara gave the letter to him. Also, the observer was threatened with legal action for publishing slander and offered a retraction.

Allyuh should be happy lara does even attend all those dinners they have across the Caribbean with ex players who kwpt him out of the side or criticized him through media houses
