Quite a shock fi true. Just posted a thread.
Where is Bimbo Rodrigues these days?
In reply to Chrissy
The greatest Jamaican jockey is enjoying retirement in Atlanta
In reply to bimbo
Loved him. Way back when - I think it was around Christmas 1979, he told us to buy everything he was riding the next Wednesday.
We still laugh about that afternoon
In reply to bimbo
So bimbo, where in the Atlanta area do you live?
I live in Conyers.
In reply to Drapsey
Me? I will never leave Jamaica.
In reply to bimbo & Drapsey
Wrong bimbo Drapsey
In reply to bimbo & Chrissy
Oops, sorry. Forgot that bimbo was that famous cartoonist.
In reply to Drapsey
This bimbo is a banker
In reply to Chrissy
I was always debating with a few of my friends in high school whether he was the best. They were Fanna Grifiths fans. We were too young to know of George Hosang
Any way one day we were doing the 200M and i ran the race of my life. I won to the shouts of bimbo!bimbo!bimbo!
In reply to bimbo
Pik A Pow or DrapPan?
In reply to bimbo
Love it. I preferred Bimbo to Fanna but both were great. I didn't see enough of Hosang.
In reply to Chrissy
Bimbo was great but Fanna was the better big race jockey...to put things in perspective, Fanna rode 9 Derby winners, Hosang, Fitzroy Gillespie and Bimbo had 3 each...

Bredda JayMor: How could I forget the great Bonnie Blue Flag?
Pioneers Longshot reminds me of a tip given to me by the sister of a former champion jockey to bet on a horse aptly named Pickpocket who had very long odds. Needless to say that my pocket was picked as the horse ran dead last

In reply to FanAttick
your list bring back memories from childhood just watching and listening horse racing..royal dad, legal light, Deep River Fanna Griffiths, Andrew Ramgeet, Neville Anderson, kenneth mattis, Eileen Cligott.
In reply to rudebway
Neville Anderson won the Derby in the early 80s on a brilliant horse named Cesario and Andrew Ramjeet won the Derby a couple years later on the great Ds A Legend
The funny thing is that in those days as much as I loved horse racing, my love for cricket was much greater. It was therefore very annoying when JBC or RJR would break from ball by ball commentary just as the cricket match was on a knife edge or when Viv was about to reach his century to broadcast the latest race from Caymanas Park!
In those days my brethren and I would have many debates over who was the best commentator between Brian Rickman, Chris Armond and Howard Abrahams. Abrahams was my favorite although Rickman was rated by horse racing enthusiasts as the best at the time
In reply to FanAttick
A guess me likkle bit senior to de man. My commentators were, especially during high school, Del Weller for the colour commentary and Desmond Chambers for the blow-by-blow. That was on RJR. But then I joined JBC Engineering after h.s. and actually was part of the Caymanas outside-broadcast crew on Saturdays with Lindy and I think Hugh Croskill sometimes.

In reply to FanAttick
Have to say for me Chris was the best. Rickman tone is too plain. No improv in his voice. Just bland.
In reply to Chrissy
Actually a Legal Light favourite. Winston " Fanna Griffiths " in the saddle. Gillespie rode him to victory in the derby.
In reply to FanAttick Bimbo was my rider but George Hosang was the best.
In reply to JayMor
Yeah. I do remember Lindy and Hugh playing the role of color commentators but dont remember either if them doing the post to post commentary....Del Weller(any relation to the cyclist David Weller?) and Desmond Chambers were before my time (though I remember Desmond Chambers as a radio disc jockey)

In reply to FanAttick
"And they're off, to a very fine start. ..."
In reply to Drapsey
The most frustrating thing was when your horse was a late non starter
In reply to FanAttick
