I thought of this fable when considering West Indies cricket and how we collectively understand the meaning of this fable. As a kid I felt that the hare was an idiot and therefore started rooting for the tortoise and thinking I do not like hares. As I got older I began to understand that the potential of the hare far exceeded the tortoise and if the hare was properly trained and educated it would bring far better results than the tortoise could ever give us.However it required thoughtfulness and resolve to train the hare.Who would do such a thing? Who would spend the time and effort to invest in an idiotic hare whose laziness and carefree attitude made him such a hated figure.
I looked around my own country and found many exceptionally bright people who because of their complete lack of social skills were languishing at the bottom of the totem pole of life simply because we could not be bothered to invest resources for their development.
As a society we have no time for those hares and continue to work with our tortoises with predictable mediocre results. When our tortoise occasionally beats a hare we rejoice and marvel but think of the potential we are ignoring in our hares!!!!
