Naseberry, Chrissy.
problemguy distinctly asked for "native" names.

In reply to XFactor
you have not heard of them because where you from may have different names for same fruits. The idea for me behind this thread is for others to look up and research the names so they can see the different names for same fruits from their island.
As we can see the naming of fruits is another one of differences between Caribbean countries. Some say we are similar but we are still different in several ways

Look bro - we used to climb granny's tree to pick sapodilla. They became Nasberries when I was an adult. How come you missed di Golden Apples - they are called June plumbs in di Yard.
How do you know when a Pear(Avocado) and a Sugar apple are ripe to eat?

You from Mars?
If you don't know just say so and stop hedging or better yet, asked a friend.

My surprise is that I appear to be the only one who likes Custard-apples.

When you go to the store, what make you choose the pears and mangoes you buy?
I am not surprise you asked that question.
My nephews a few yers ago, stopped me from buying mangoes in Ousting, he drove to St. Andrews and got me a pale.
He said he has never bought a mango.
I am quite sure with all the tree you planted in Western Canada, you must have seen and enjoyed a variety of apples, cherries and berries, the same way you know though fruits were ripe, in the same to fruits in the region.

When you go to the store, what make you choose the pears and mangoes you buy?
I don't buy Pears or fruits from the store - my parents have too many fruit trees in Mount Wilton.
In reply to TheTrail
Don't tell me you have never picked fruit from the trees in Mount Wilton.
BTW, is Mount Wilton in Bim?
I know Fat Pokes as Fat Porks
I know Dungs/Dongs/Donz as Donks - Lord have mercy that fruit got many names.. I think Jamaicans call them coolie plums but I could be wrong..Jamaicans rename everything look dem here
ginneps or what bajans call ackees look much nicer in the tree than they actually taste to me..
interesting that I haven't heard anyone mention the chilli plum..look dem here
de Julie mango is de king/queen of all fruit fa me but a decent Nam Dok mango is right up there wid it..just don't eat the skin.
fried plantain deserve honorable mention..

Is their a mount anywhere in Bim?
I know a few Mout a massie Bajans but no mounts
In reply to TheTrail
Man when it comes to fruit trees in Bim there is v little I dont know. Avocados dont get soft on the tree. You have to eyeball them and if they look plump and full you pick them to ripen on the kitchen counter or wherever.
I would not even discuss sugar apples or sweetsops as the Jamaicans call them
Man I have dragon fruits growing in Bim and lychee and cherimoyas and others you never heard about
SpudzMcKenzie where are you?
I know a few Mout a massie Bajans but no mounts

In reply to Chrissy
Here is one.

Mount Hillaby is located in St.Andrew, Barbados. It is the highest point in Barbados. Approximately 1500 feet above sea level.
Mount Wilton is not too far away and it is located in St.Thomas, Barbados.
The G Xers are buying up the land before them....take all of it. We can see the whole of Bridgetown and the Deepwater Harbour lit up at night or on a clear day.
De kid gets on Kemar case at time but he is right on this one.

A guy came back from USA , went to town and brought some pears from a hawker, he paid about $8.00 for 2 .
Next day , his mum went to town and brought the same pears for 2/$4, when his mum came home, he asked how much she paid , she said $4 for both .He was upset and said to his mum , the hawker robbed him.
His mum said him what did you asked the Hawker for, he said 'Avocadoes', his mum said to him I asked for "pears". you asked for Avocadoes.

I once stayed at my friend's house in Wanstead Heights, at night on his patio, it felt like we were over the ocean.
Where is Mount Hill?
I've travelled around the Island on a Motor cycle before I left the Island, hearing these names, tells me I know only a few areas.
In reply to tc1
That almost happened to me, I was with my mom, and asked the vendor what was the price of the Advocadoes, she said one for $2, this was 1972.
My mother pushed me out of the way and said we don't need any, the next vendor my mom said, "Sis what the price of your Pears", two for a dollar, when we were out of anyone ears, my mother said to me, these people know when a Jackass is in Barbados, you come here asking for Advocadoes.

there is a central ridge in Bim that runs from the Mount Pleasant area in St Phillip through St George (Mount Hil, Mount Plantation just past Ellerton) through Free hill and Gun Hill, Grand View, Shop Hill in St Thomas and right down to St James.
there are lesser ridges that include Cave Hill and Wanstead.
other localised ridges are in St John, Christ Church, St Peter, St Lucy and other parishes
