BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Phil Simmons has brushed aside concern over the form of some members of the West Indies batting group in the just-concluded two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Though West Indies produced solid batting performances throughout the series, opener John Campbell struggled with a mere 68 runs from four innings while Vice-Captain Jermaine Blackwood garnered only 42 runs from his four appearances.

But Head Coach Simmons said it was unrealistic to expect every batsman to strike form in every series, stressing the more important element was the overall batting success of the unit.

“In every series, you're not going to get every batsman firing,” Simmons pointed out.

“In one series you'll get two or three and in the next series you may get a different two or three, so the important thing is that the team is batting as a team and that every Test match, somebody is standing up, every Test match somebody is looking to get a hundred or a big score.

This is a response of an intelligent coach who looks at the bigger picture, looking at the team as a unit, with different players contributing in different series, therefore the overall team advancement objectives are slowly been achieved.

Are you saying this only because Phil defended the two failing Jamaicans? lol

No because he had the intelligence to keep Braithwaite in the team despite his previous failures, now everyone is overjoyed by Braithwaite recent performance, that's an intelligent coach. You are ready to discard a player who was your top batsman for three consecutive series because of a relative failure in one series, and is still considered by ICC as WI highest ranking batsman, that's asinine and not helpful to the progress of WI cricket.

What series has John Campbell fired in? Sorry I must have missed his firing in that series.

Campbell had the top scores in 2 of 4 innings in the series prior to Bangladesh, might have been low team scoring innings but he at least put some decency on the scoreboard for WI.

Here it is VOD, I know that when it comes to Jcan players you have selective memory LOL

West Indies opener John Campbell finally found some form on the tour of New Zealand, as his half-century along with an unbeaten 60 from skipper Jason Holder have given the visiting side a bit of respite, following the third day's play in the second Test in Wellington.

Earlier, Campbell scored a Test-best 68 from 109 balls, as the West Indies still trail the Kiwis by 85 runs heading into today's fourth day.

Still facing a huge deficit, the West Indies, asked to follow on, got a decent start from openers Campbell and Kraigg Brathwaite. The pair went about their second innings more positively putting on 37 runs before Brathwaite fell for 24.

Campbell, who has been under tremendous pressure in the run-scoring department, finally buckled down and played a more patient defiant knock, reaching his 50 off 81 balls with six fours.

The West Indies team is moving in the right direction but there is something that concerns me. We are much too loyal to players who don't perform.

I'll admit chopping and changing is not the answer either. So we have to strive to reward excellence but at the same time discourage mediocrity.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

VOTreason has selective memory. I am surprised he has not claimed Bonnor as a Dottie. We were losing matches within three days embarrassingly and now the knives are out to oust the Jcans players.

Please drop them and see what happen next series?

I guess Campbell's place in the side is safe, he just have to make some runs in the regionals and he will be good to go.
