Only in Guyana-Not funny at all
In reply to Dukes
Minister real thin-skinned - it is alleged that all the man did was to call him a murderer and terrorist.
In reply to Dukes
Disgraceful - will send this to media friends
So the incident happened in March and the media guy is still locked up. A waste of tax payers money.
In reply to dayne
I don't think (subject to correction) he's been detained since March, but a day or two ago. He posted a video on facebook where he calls the sports minister a murderer and terrorist. He is a Talk Show host so may be he's considered a Media person?
In reply to DirtyDan
Shouldn't Gavin Matthews have been charged for slander then?
In reply to Norm
That is a civil matter not a criminal matter and is brought by the aggrieved person, in this case by the Minister not the Police..
In reply to dayne
It is not merely a waste of tax payer money - it is a violation of the man's rights - arrogant punk - he looks hte part.
he should be sued for slander
In reply to Dukes
This don't happen only in Guyana....
In reply to Dukes
Yes, sued for slander in a civil court.
Any thoughts on the media person spewing inflammatory accusations in a divided country same week that the Opposition party lost yet another election petition against results 1 year ago that there was ample evidence that the losing party tried to steal?
Meaning there are supporters who are buying the rhetoric that the election was stolen, and you have party leaders saying, after last court loss, that he will not be responsible for how his party's supporters react to the latest court decision?
In reply to DirtyDan
A man on social media and writing crap on Facebook is a media person?
How many people would the police lock up in the US for causing Biden "emotional distress"?
In reply to Dukes
Your link above refers to the guy as a Talk Show host.
True, charge seems wrong, but those are dangerous accusations. Call someone a liar, accusing them of stealing etc. that's slander, but a murderer and terrorist is the stuff that Bush attacked Iraq for.
In reply to ray
TRUE. But no where else in the Caribbean does this take place.
What's this Cyber Crime Act about?
Lawyers or mere mortals in the know, can you weigh in?
Ramson, who is an Attorney-at-Law and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, posted a video excerpt containing offending words as uttered by Mr. Matthews and captioned stated that This is why he is arrested freedom of speech doesnt mean you could call people murderer and terrorist
Mr. Matthews was arrested at the Square of the Revolution while he was staging an anti-government picketing exercise.
There is more to this story....I would like to know what the Cybercrime Act says
In reply to Dukes
TRUE. But no where else in the Caribbean does this take place.
Dukesy you must follow T&T news ....radio stations does get raid and man does be arrested...even we boy Fazeer Mohammed got fired for political comments sometime ago.
You ever hear about talk show host Ian Alleyne ?
In reply to Narper
So if Barry visits Guyana (highly unlikely but stay with me) and calls me a murderer and terrorist because I seh Bravo cyah bat,I could complain to the Commissioner of Police saying that it has caused me great emotional distress and I cyah sleep when de night come and BINGO Barry is arrested for causing de dukester emotional distress to the point where my sideburns fall out.
MAAAN de possibilities are endless!!!!
Roger Khan could get quite a few people arrested!!!!!

In reply to Dukes
Apparently this Cybercrime Act is being used to redefine some old crimes. In Africa, similar laws have seriously curtailed freedom of expression, sort of like Burnham's ban on newsprint to gag opposition newspapers, while claiming that freedom of press was alive and well in Guyana.
All Guyanese should protest against such abuse of a seemingly well-intended law, before the problem gets out if hand. Where are the civic-minded people of Guyana?
In reply to Norm
Some ah dem in California!!!!!!!!

Dukes finally find his voice to criticize Guyana govt once PNC is out
The Cybercrime Act is here for anyone interested
I take my students thru it every semester - they find it funny when we talk about basic things they do everyday that can get them arrested according to this act. They find it funny when the read the part of the Act that defines a Child as someone below the Age of 18 (especially when the age of consent is in Guyana is 16). So sending their bfs/gfs nude pics could be interpreted as child pornography (if that person is under age 18 - though they could be doing 'the real thing' in person without consent...Maybe this part is more nuanced that a non-lawyer like me is making it out to be...
In an earlier version of this Act there was a bit that would have gotten you arrested just for being the recipient of an electronic communication you did not ask for...
As an uninformed public we barely gave attention to this law when it was discussed prior to being passed...
To date...A few ppl have been thrown into jail for posting stuff on Facebook
Guyana is barely a real place...careful what you say here about dem gt politicians lol before dem send wackie notice for id

Thanks for Posting.
Which section does this charge fall under? A quick scan seems 18 but didn't look through it all.
The intent seems ok overall, and I see Granger signed it off - I was expecting it was a new PPP law.

Therein lies the pitfall of politics everywhere. From all accounts Dukes is a reasonable, fair, intelligent and honest gentleman. But political affiliations run deep, whether Democrat or Republican, PNC/APNU or PPP, PNM or UNC, JLP or PNP. He was silent during a modern day thievery by a party he has touted in the past, zero comment, not a peep. Now in the critics chair, he suddenly finds his voice.
In reply to doosra
Thanks, Doosra. What are your concerns about the law in general, it seems geared towards porn or preventing people from blackmailing or embarrassing others with nude or compromising pics.
In reply to Dukes
Barry deserves an arrest, nobody would object.
In reply to DirtyDan
Well his latter actions are contrary to the former qualities you assign to him, no??
Or if he indeed has those qualities then perhaps he lacks others like balls and honesty...a blowhard if you will
